The John F. Kennedy (JFK) School is often called "the best kept secret in Newark" -- and for good reason. Although smaller than most public Newark schools, JFK is impacting the lives of countless families by educating some of our community's most precious students - those who have special needs. Serving nearly 200 students, JFK is a district-wide middle-secondary school for students who are autistic, disabled or medically fragile. Despite their challenges, these students are thriving thanks to a compassionate staff and committed families and caregivers.
During this season of giving, UMDNJ-University Hospital assisted JFK students with a holiday party at the school on December 15. Working with Mom2Mom (the UMDNJ-University Behavioral HealthCare initiative that helps parents of special needs children cope and also is a community partner of the JFK School), the hospital collected donations to help make the students' party a festive affair. The hospital's Medical Staff made a generous $1,000 donation that was used to purchase two Xbox 360 Kinects. In addition, hospital staff, UMDNJ personnel and students raised $1,317 that was used to purchase a delicious meal and other supplies for the party. Nearly 150 people attended.
