The way Colbert dealt with that audience member, who had a legit point despite his method, is why he is the only celebrity I would ever actually like to invite as a dinner guest, or sit and have a conversation with. Brilliant.
@meganh7526
@meganh7526 2 года назад
I think his method was fine. This was one of the few ways an ordinary person could actually talk directly to a very wealthy, powerful businessperson and not have that person be protected by layers of PR people, yes men, and security. Clearly it didn’t change the trajectory of Uber’s success - they continue to do well despite routinely screwing every person they’re middleman-ing for (drivers, customers, restaurants) - but I hope that people who saw it, and are seeing it for first time now, at least considered how patronizing their business model really is bad for everyone but Uber.

Some laws are meant to be broken. I live in Las Vegas, and before Uber/Lyft everytime I tried to get a cab (and wasn't at a resort or the Airport), I was quoted 2 to 3 hours to get to me, and even when I waited (I had to or walk) they did not arrive. The longest I've waited for Lyft has been 10 minutes.

@tomstreet2859

I have little sympathy for the taxi monopoly...but the Uber founder was against his own workers getting tips, he was planning on replacing them with driverless cars, and he had sneaky code in the app store, and worst of all humiliated his own employees on tape who put their life savings into it....the convenience of UBER is great but they could have been much better people.
@vitamindealer7915
@vitamindealer7915 9 месяцев назад
Why no one ever talks about the lack of taxi availability when you arrange for a cab, the taxi drivers bitching at you depending on how far you want to go after they accept the ride and you are in the vehicle, never accepting credit card, boggles my mind. The transportation director gets to just remain super quiet about all of the inherent flaws of the transportation system. Or how DUIs went DOWN across the world thanks to uber, which is indisputable.

Uber is a massive fail in Europe. There are alternatives, competitors that do it WAY better and consumers have reacted accordingly and are shunning Uber for these alternative companies that outperform Uber in price and service. The only advantage Uber actually is the fact that the word Uber itself has slipped into the lexicon and is used as a generic term for any and all such companies. Like Xerox copy or a Kleenex tissue, brands that have become words for a more general thing with many competitors. P.S. I had the same suit that JGL is wearing, in the 80's. Is that the look he was going for? Maybe I should have kept it...
@El-wv1tf
@El-wv1tf 2 года назад
Yup, I live in Europe and I haven't used an Uber even once. First of all, the transportation system - like night busses and trains. Then you can have "angels" to come pick you up and drive you and your car home (costs like a taxi). And then taxi, which also use apps...
@wewper
@wewper 2 года назад
@Bri Ba You can't track your taxi in your city? One thing that taxis in my city (in Canada) did in response to Uber was to introduce tracking capability. It's not proprietary technology. If their taxis have GPS (which they already did), they can track them. Uber has no presence here; just Uber Eats.
@LindaC616
@LindaC616 2 года назад
NOT defending Uber here, as I've only downloaded the app and used them out of necessity in 2021 (plus friends who called one for me in Chicago years ago, and it was their first time using it ). I so wish we had efficient transportation in most places here in the US, because having traveled in Latin America and Europe, it is more efficient and affordable there (shoutout to Germany!l) Plus, in some cities in the US, there has been demonstrated race bias amongst cabbies (true, most of *those* cabbies not born and raised in the US, but it doesn't matter when it's 2am in Manhattan and you're trying to get a cab back to certain neighborhoods outside of Manhattan). My car died last summer. We only have two cab companies here, the large one which has permission to enter the local military base, and a small startup, which only has a few cars and shut down during the pandemic. The larger company wasn't answering the phone (summer evening, tourist town). So that night and one or twice more during the weeks my car was getting fixed, Uber was my only option. That being said, they should face regulation, for the reasons cited by the gentleman in the audience who spoke

OMG... finally someone said it! It's been bugging me for months! Why can't they post the clips in chronological order! And it's not just this channel. Other late night talk show RU-vid channels as well, SNL as well... I almost wonder if it's deliberately done. They used to be in order, but suddenly most aren't? Wonder if there is some collective reason behind a this...
@davidbrentgriffin
@davidbrentgriffin 2 года назад
Tip du jour: If you watch the first video after the monologue when they are batch posted (e.g., NFT/AFT today, Meanwhile 2x/week, etc.), then click on the video on the upper right at the end, and continue to do so after each segment, they are set up to play in order.
@elaexplorer
@elaexplorer 2 года назад
It looks like the clips are prepared and then just drag and dropped into an upload folder. Then at the prescribed time they're mass uploaded to RU-vid. Because some take longer than others to render they end up out of order.
@krystofdayne
@krystofdayne 2 года назад
@@mollyfurball Yeah I've been wondering about that too. My first guess was that it was just happenstance, that whoever edits down these interviews into clips and uploads them on RU-vid just uploads them all at the same time and whichever just so happens to be done first, or happens to be chosen first by a RU-vid algorithm that decides on what to do when two videos are uploaded simultaneously, would be the one that came first. But the problem with that is, that it should result in the videos being in the right order at least some of the time, and they are in the wrong order every single time, so it has to be deliberate at least to some extent. Whether it is actual malice, maybe getting more clicks by confusing folks as to the order in which they have to click on the videos, or just a result of some weird internal reason behind the upload schedule, I have no idea.
@krystofdayne
@krystofdayne 2 года назад
@@davidbrentgriffin That won't be set up though, that's just RU-vid algorithms being clever and noticing that that is the order in which people tend to watch the videos. So it's probably going to be right after some time has passed and people have been watching them in that order for a while but not from the get-go. Not a bad suggestion though.

No coincidence, I dumped Uber only weeks b4 Kalanick was outed. Calling Uber in the early morning to go to work. The driver, that I was tracking (sounded drunk or sleepy) kept missing my street (all numbered streets, with new classy street signs). Out on my lawn, I was trying to wave him down while I could see him roll by the end of my street, he finally just drove off. He said he couldn't find the address and charged me the $5. cancellation fee. Appealing the charge to Uber, they stood by the driver that bailed on me, saying, "We won't see eye to eye". I totally understood the toxic business acumen (from the top down) embraced by Uber when I saw the video that led to Kalanick's downfall.

@ammaleslie509
@ammaleslie509 2 года назад
"Just get a taxi" is not that easy for everyone. Some people live in areas where taxis are not just driving around waiting to be hailed. Some people live in neighborhoods taxis avoid. Uber lets you know exactly when they are arriving so you can wait inside a warm place or sit somewhere comfortable and don't have to go out to the street until they arrive. Uber drivers don't see you in advance so they can't discriminate and pass you by because of what you look like, what race you are, or where they think you might be going. Uber keeps a record of who picked you up and when which is an extra safety feature. Uber and Lyft are also cheaper. I only started using Uber when I became mobility impaired and could not depend on even called taxi service to get me to my Sunday job on time (a day when public transportation was too spotty at that hour of the morning) I understand why taxi services are angry, but there's nothing at all stopping them from offering the same service. They don't.

As JGL pointed out, the reason why Uber sucks is they were systematically breaking the law and profiting from other's misery and pain. That's all due to Travis Kalanick. Even though he has left the company, his attitude is still part of the company's DNA. So I'd rather walk than give any of my money to Uber. Lyft has my vote.

Doesn’t matter Uber fail in EU or certain places of not. It doesn’t matter if laws had to be reviewed as a result or not. It doesn’t matter if other brands and other sectors like e-hailing have strived in the aftermath. Uber had a global impact and it should be recognised and reviewed by the public in general thru whatever medium. Great story with lots of learning points.

Taxi cab drivers were basically unions. Sure they were disrupted but way more jobs were created bc of Uber.

@@steve87j You're missing why the current Taxi system in NYC was created in the first place. Glut of drivers. The taxi system was built to limit the number of taxis on the street and limit traffic congestion from them. There's only so many allowed in the entire city. By design it gave job security and a living wage. It was an intended feature. The bargaining power drivers had was built in from the beginning. The system was setup so drivers could become owners. Not all drivers took it, not even most. But every single year some taxi drivers became owners in their own right. They could have power beyond the union. True equity and a seat at the table. Uber came in and messed that all up. No driver is going to have a seat at Uber's board meetings. And the anti union people may think that's good. Which I guess is a valid if somewhat limited opinion on this particular situation, since the taxi system gave drivers the chance at something beyond the union. True ownership and control of their own work. Not a union vote, actual ownership.

Uber has been like its founder, a disruptive pain in the butt for many of the drivers and the taxi companies. Lots of people use it but it’s not as well paid as it ought to be and there have been quite a few really dodgy operators and sexual assaults by drivers,

The only downside to uber is that professional drivers would have to use their own cars. But uber isn't meant to be a full time career like taxiing, it's a gig.
