It's simple, you want to listen to Radiohead, you listen to Radiohead, the album, the live performances. I can see why so many people think Radiohead fans are insufferable, appreciate this for what it is, a cover. It is their interpretation and view it as such. As a Radiohead fan, I would love to hear as many different interpretations and versions of their songs as possible, its all so beautiful.
Great bands always have insufferable fans. That's always been the way. I've loved radiohead for the last 20 odd years and I am certain I was an insufferable little terd many times along the way.
When you look at the comments and realise a lot of people have said "too safe", and "emotionless", while others have accused her of being "narcissistic" and "dramatic", you know that this poor girl was always going to get slated for having the temerity to cover a Radiohead song. If she sounded EXACTLY Thom Yorke, what would be the point of a cover?
it's a histrionic mess. Completely loses the paranoid edge of the original. What was the point of this version? There's a lot of these piggyback half-baked artists around these days - google the lounge jazz version of Creep - and they all sound a bit ridiculous. Fail.
Just as you take my hand Just as you write my number down Just as the drinks arrive Just as they play your favourite song As your bad day disappears No longer wound up like a spring Before you've had too much Come back in focus again The walls are bending shape You got a Cheshire cat grin All blurring into one This place is on a mission Before the night owl Before the animal noises Closed circuit cameras Before you comatose Before you run away from me Before you're lost between the notes The beat goes round and round The beat goes round and round I never really got there I just pretended that I had Words are blunt instruments Words are sawn off shotguns Come on and let it out Come on and let it out Come on and let it out Come on and let it out Before you run away from me Before you're lost between the notes Just as you take the mic Just as you dance, dance, dance A jigsaw falling into place So there is nothing to explain You eye each other as you pass She looks back and you look back Not just once And not just twice Wish away your nightmare Wish away the nightmare You got the light you can feel it on your back You got the light you can feel it on your back Your Jigsaw falling into place
every time I hear this song I wonder how can it be possible to compose such music with so many ideas. Indeed a song where everything falls into place even though it feels like every instrument plays his own song like jigsaw pieces.
I love it. The beauty of Yorke's work is that it can be interpreted so many ways and still be Radiohead. I think the vocal is perfect in this arrangement. More of a jazz feel like Amy Whinehouse would have done it.
Oscar M Obviously. I think what Abhishek meant, since the emphasis is on "dramatic" vocals, is that Thom has a way of singing that - even though it is dramatic - sounds indifferent at the same time.
Look at bands like Journey or Van Halen: they've had a carousel of vocalist, because the distinction of their sound comes from the guitars, not the voice (even though Steve Perry is very distinctive, a copycat can be found if you are willing to look hard enough...). Thom, on the other hand, simply can't be replicated. Too many idiosyncrasies.
"Jigsaw Falling Into Place" Just as you take my hand Just as you write my number down Just as the drinks arrive Just as they play your favourite song As your bad day disappears No longer wound up like a spring Before you've had too much Come back in focus again The walls are bending shape You got a Cheshire cat grin All blurring into one This place is on a mission Before the night owl Before the animal noises Closed circuit cameras Before you comatose Before you run away from me Before you're lost between the notes The beat goes round and round The beat goes round and round I never really got there I just pretended that I had Words are blunt instruments Words are sawn off shotguns Come on and let it out Come on and let it out Come on and let it out Come on and let it out Before you run away from me Before you're lost between the notes Just as you take the mic Just as you dance, dance, dance A jigsaw falling into place So there is nothing to explain You eye each other as you pass She looks back and you look back Not just once And not just twice Wish away your nightmare Wish away the nightmare You got the light you can feel it on your back You got the light you can feel it on your back Your Jigsaw falling into place
Yikes, people are really ripping the shit out of that singer haha. Come on, if you don't like it as much as the original (I don't either) fair enough, but it's not BAD by any means.
Nah, there is actually some good Radiohead covers out there. Lotus Flower by some guy called Manix (I believe) is great and Reckoner by Gnarls Barkley is quite a thing. Thing with Thom songs is that he is not only just a great singer but knows how to emphasize the vocals without the scream feeling, a line that experts in vocals are kinda of afraid to cross.
I know a few sources say 'what's the point of instruments, words are sawn off shotguns'. But I really thought it was 'words are blunt instruments, words are a sawn off shotgun.'
It's funny reading all these comments from people who probably have never sang or played a musical instrument at this level at any point in their entire lives. Could it better? Sure. Is it impressive? yes.
Let's take the most rockin' rock n' roll track from In Rainbows and apply delicate, sophisticated orchestral sensibilities. Love it. Let 1,000 interpretations proliferate! I, for one, would like to see these same folks do an interpretation where it starts out within severe Apollinian strictures, but then graduates to a point where it unleashes full-on Dionysian revelry right around "C'mon and let it out", and then descends into a completely different place at the end reminiscent of both, but distinct. They might need to triple the track length though.
People are saying Gnarls Barkley's cover of Reckoner is better? His voice mimik's Yorks falsetto fashion in his R&B style that doesn't allow one to discern the lyrics. He also doesn't let the song even breath at it's most critical moments. York's voice has a sense of strained, delicate, thin, wispy notes with amazing transitions that evoke etherial feelings that are almost humanly impossible for a vocalist to replicate. The drumming by Barkley's band also does not understand particular syncopated beat structure of the opening sequence drowning out the best notes as a result. The guitars are also not tuned correctly.
This cover is a celebration of Radiohead, one of my favourite bands. It's great to see the track covered in a different way and the group put their own spin on it.
+J4ZZ I think that the main problem is that the voice volume is too high, it's so high that it ruins the great orchestration, really a shame because it's an amazing cover, just imagine this with Thom's voice!!! :O

yep, she sings good but she is too loud in the mix
In my opinion the problem is not excatly her voice... The thing is that thom is not only singing this song, he is acting too. You can translate every single phrase to a feeling. He's much more passionate. He makes you feel things like you are the guy/girl in this song. That's why he is amazing.
I honestly think her voice is pretty good… my main gripe with this rendition is the weird rhythm in the strings section, esp in the beginning. The original has a bit of a swing to it, which imo was vital to the vibe
jameshetfieldserbia So true, especially because it puts the next line in context. And besides, i think those are the two of the best lines thom's ever written
I hate when singers try to put vocal «inflexions» in every damn line like they're somehow trying to one up the melody or the original performance just to show off or because it makes them «feel good». It'd be like a guitarist or a drummer trying to put fill ins at every fucking chord and making themselves the center of attention. That's just top tier narcissism. The song itself is the star of the show, it has something to say, get out of its way.
Spot on. If the vocalist above comes and reads these comments, I hope that she can take this on board for the future. At least if she does any more Radiohead cover versions.
Agreed _(and an excellent analogy)_ ... and in doing so, those type of singers only serve their own interests, at the expense of what works best for the song. When a simple, pure melody is what is required, all the trills, bells and whistles in the world, serve only to distract from that basic heart of the song.
I had always wondered if this had been a song about a pick up at a bar written from a female perspective, so it's really interesting to hear with a female vocalist..., the whole first verse, and lyrics "I never really got there, I just pretended that I had" and "Before you run away from me, Before you're lost between the notes"...good to hear another perspective on it...
It's kind of interesting to hear what Radiohead songs would sound like stripped down, if every member of that band wasn't a fucking musical genius. Still good songs, but something's missing.
