Jill had beaten Liz Manley in the SP here and skated well but Manley's great performance easily pulled her up into first overall. Still it's an interesting early glimpse of Trenary before her surprise win at US Nationals in early 1987.
This is a great program with nice choreography, but Jill never had the back flexibility to do nice laybacks, and her take off on the double axel was always unstable and unreliable, however she covered the ice even better than Thomas and Manley
Why didnt she continue skating beautiful programs to nice music like this rather than the ridiculous macarana/egyptian dance she did to win her controversial World title over Ito in 1990.
roger leblond That’s probably because some, such as Toller Cranston, criticized her for performing rather traditional and generic (in their words, not mine) long programs through 1989. Their primary concern, I’d imagine, was that she wasn’t showing too much artistic versatility when artistry seemingly was the weapon she had against up-and-comers, like Yamaguchi and Harding, with strong jumps. Luckily, the new direction she took w/ Renee Rocca really worked for her in 1990...right before her career unfortunately ended.
dwayneparkerUSA please accept our apologies for Simon Reed who clearly wasn’t paying attention at practices. Betty Callaway commentating with him was better
Liz Manley did triple Lutz and triple loop to win over jill.. she was just a triple toe loop and triple salchow skater like all of the American female skaters of the 80's her program content never changed same old tired jumps never saw her do a triple Lutz jump or triple loop 🤣
