Say positive or negative things about Jill, but that one-foot Axel into the triple Salchow is still one of, if not my absolute, favorite combinations.

Beautiful old school performance. That forward spiral into the 3sal at 5:41 represents all the best in competitive skating in the 1980's. I miss glorious, complete programs like this.

To everyone drowning Jill’s jump Arsenal -I read or heard a story about Caryn Kadavy who trained with Jill that at one point Karen had a fourth triple presumably the flip but CARLO told her not to train it that it was too much and not necessary. So I blame Carlo that Jill never developed beyond what he led her to. Still amazing presentation skills and kinda with she had stayed with Sandra Benic’s choreo.

Screw all the haters, I love Jill Trenary's skating. Carlo Fassi was pretty much a master at this point with decades of experience and multiple gold medalists on his resume. Jill was like the zenith of the Fassi school. That haircut was copied by other skaters waaaaaaay into the 90s (I recall one skater in the early 90s that basically was Jill Trenary knockoff - hair, dress, even music).

Oh my gosh! She was one of my all-time favorite skaters since watching skating in 1976. She was so beautiful, musical and artistic. When skaters actually knew how to interpret music. Skating today is simply awful with skater doing spins with their butts up, mooning the judges and audiences. Horrible vocals. The first big mistake the ISU made was to eliminate the compulsory figures. They taught balance, control, posture and edge control. They were analogous to playing scales and arpeggios in music. They teach you basic technique, which is needed in most music. The second mistake was allowing vocals. Skaters today make contorted faces, while waving their arms aimlessly. The could substitute any piece of music because it's just background music and has really nothing to do with their skating moves. Watch how Jill actually skates to the music and times her footwork with the music being played. I miss this old school of skating, as well as Dick Button's commentaries.

The debate over the value of compulsory figures will continue ad infinitum. As part of competition, their inclusion did allow for some weaker free skaters to win competitions (Trixie Schuba vs Janet Lynn--classic example of this). However, the self-discipline, edge control, body awareness and overall quality of a skater's performance were definitely enhanced by practicing school figures, even if the skater never mastered them. Some skaters were great in figures and free skating (such as Peggy Fleming and Dorothy Hamill to name but two). You may not agree with what I say about compulsory figures,, however is it fair to pass judgment on Jill Trenary for being good at figures when that was a requirement of competition in her day?
@timothyhh
@timothyhh 8 лет назад
You are absolutely correct. And too many people seem to view Trenary through a current day lens. At the time her freeskating was right up there with the best in the world. All the talk below about her owing her whole career to figures is just silly. This performance may have been overshadowed by Yamaguchi and Harding, but it still would have WON the long at 89 Europeans.

@acusion1, if you are saying the new scoring system does not reward skaters for doing unusual (and often difficult) jumps or sequences, I agree wholeheartedly! I miss seeing those simpler sequences like "2A (or 1A)-half loop-half loop-turn-2T" or its derivatives. Such moves would be illegal today (more than 3 jumps in a combo) and, even if they weren't, they won't earn too many points... This season (13-14), though, I am so excited to see Yuzuru Hanyu doing 3F-half loop-3S." Seeing that combination takes me back to pre-CoP free skating, which I personally think was more interesting... I also miss seeing walleys, 2 walleys, inside Axels, etc. etc.!

Trenary seemingly had the package to reach the top. Arguably the prettiest female skater to come along since Witt and great artistry. But just didn't build up her technical jumps. By 1992 (3 yrs after this interview), Trenary would disappear from skating.
@sbe79
@sbe79 6 лет назад
Well, she did reach the top -- only briefly. She had the "look", for sure. Unfortunately, she owed much of her career to being beautiful (like Witt used to her advantage) and dominating the figures portion of every event which was held first before the SP and LP. It's easier for judges to keep you in the top spot if you're already in it after Phase One, you're from an important country and you don't screw up a whole bunch. But immediately following her World title in 1990, it was very apparent she'd never win another title of any type again. By the fall of that same year, the American women -- now free of having to practice figures -- starting throwing down a full arsenal of 5 or 6 different triples. Only having 3 in your arsenal, like Jill, was never going to be enough again. She seemed to be aware -- she never skated anything close to "good" on the Olympic level again and opted out of most competitions. No US Nationals for her 1991. She only entered one minor competition that entire season. She retired quietly in the fall of 1991 heading into the 92 Olympics after competing in Skate Canada. She maybe landed one triple jump between both the SP and LP. By this point, that kind of performance wouldn't have even rated a Top 10 finish at Nationals. She had won the World title in 1990 and now she couldn't snag a podium spot less than 2 years later at a smaller competition. She could no longer jump to even her regular standard, never mind adding the Lutz and Loop. She fell very, very fast from her dizzying heights.

You can tell some of the popularity by the number of video views, most of hers are under 10,000 while Yamaguchi and Michelle Kwan some over 100,000 views Most loved 4 skaters in American History: Sonja Henie Peggy Fleming Dorothy Hamil and Michelle Kwan, Jill would not be in my top 25, Lisa Marie Allen twice as elegant and much cleaner programs than Jill and yet she never won, she had to face Linda Fratianne a very solid skater.

I don't think she couldn't understand the difference between college and high school I just think she was amazed and in awe of being in college and having a quote-unquote normal life. When you go from waking up in the morning at about 5 a.m. every morning to a schedule that allows you to have a class at 8 or 9 in the morning it's very very different and I think that's what she meant.

Thank goodness this was the last of the compulsory figures dependant champions. Compulsories really never equated to actually skating skill, Jill Ternary, Kartarina Witt, Anett Potzsch etc.... were prime examples of this travesty of skating history, where the actual best skaters never won because one component of skating decided the winner more often than not.

This woman was a joke. And no injuries didn't force her to quit. How can she get injured..she never did anything difficult. The second they dropped compulsory she quit..saying "injuries". But she had the nerve to say she would still compete if they put compulsory back into skating and they limit jumps to just four. She never did any clean triples and her hardest was a flip which she rarely landed. Even if four jumps were allowed let's not forget Midori and Tonya and Kristi and Nancy were all doing triple Lutz jumps. And not to mention Midori.doing triple axles. And they all had better artistry than Jill. This woman was a big joke.
@MichaelWDupre
@MichaelWDupre 8 лет назад
To say "she never did anything difficult" is not a fair statement. Have you competed in the nationals, worlds and olympics? The pressure from those competitions is incredibly difficult. Have you landed any triple jumps and if so, have you been able to do them under the pressure of competition consistently? They may look easy to the casual observer, but they are difficult to do, and getting off with the timing of the jump (easy to do when nervous) usually means disaster. Have you ever tried doing the school figures required as part of any competition? It's amazing how hard it can be to trace perfect circles with multiple turns all while on one leg and then go retrace your exact pattern, going over your old tracings precisely with the other leg. It's like writing a sentence and then immediately going back over it using your opposite hand at the same speed, and retracing it precisely. It's hard!

you have to remember that she was one of the very few skaters who was doing a triple flip back when that was the hardest you could actually do before Lutz's and axles. not to mention if you listen to the commentator he says that she won both portions the competition if you used to win at least two portions of the competition odds are you're either going to medal or when the entire competition. this was also the era where you could have little slip-ups like she had and not really lose your place! it's not like today where every little thing that goes wrong has a point deduction to go with it. got to love the 80s!
@sbe79
@sbe79 6 лет назад
I don't think she was a big joke, per se. I think she was excellent for her time. Unfortunately, her "time" was 1986-1990. By the fall of 1991, when she was trying to vie for a spot on the 92 Olympic team, she was screwing up every jump in a program that was only competitive by 1989 standards. I think she knew her time was up and she just BARELY got that World title by the skin of her teeth -- never again would that LP be deemed podium-worthy, never mind gold. She peaked in the nick of time and then everybody surpassed her immediately. But that Single Axel/Triple Salchow combo is really aesthetically pleasing, even now.

wow to say a 3 time national champion and world champion was a joke is an insult in addition to being a false and rude statement.......she was technically strong and had good flow speed and was a complete skater especially during this time she was doing triple flips and strong content when many were not. overall she was the total package and a great elegant skater

It's an aesthetically pleasing combination to see. It doesn't carry much more weight than the 3 Sal alone, that is true. But, back then, it was probably equal to a 3 Sal/2 Toe combo which was considered really competitive... except this combo was more fluid and eye catching.
