I was told to watch this because Jim Carrey had gone crazy, but this just looks like a man living his best life, and working out demons through a healthy and productive medium. I wish him the best.
@@BigBobbyWetto Because people are socialized to put on a fake face, and conform to what is socially popular. Anyone who goes against the grain is viewed as crazy or weird. To be fair, as someone who spent ten years serving adult living with all kinds of mental illness, some of what he describes sounds mildly manic, but not to a degree that seems problematic. This looks like self-supportive art therapy. What I feel concern about, as a degreed artist and art teacher with training in material safety, is that he might not know enough about safely enjoying his art. Jim describing using paintings as tables to eat off of is NOT a good idea. I cant tell if he has adequate air flow in these spaces, and in several scenes he has splatters of paint on his face, hands or arms. Even with acrylic paint, that's not a great idea, especially if you're doing this every day. I hope he knows not to eat, drink or smoke until he has thoroughly scrubbed up.
When people label living your dreams and doing what you enjoy and feeling comfortable in your skin as crazy; well, you just gotta wonder how unfulfilling their lives must really be. That ain't crazy, that's embracing your existence. People could take some lessons from that.
To 'win' in a conservative society, creative people have to suffer. Problem is, societies built on unbridled creativity don't last long. You have to minimise the suffering while contributing your creativity to society. People think creatives are insane because they're doing things that appear to be insane to a non-creative. We non-creative people just don't get you guys, you're seeing things we don't, making connections between things that simply don't connect for us. A little less judgement either way would be nice though

That is such an incredible, well layered quote. Truly speaks to me, and I believe speaks to all of us. We’re all afraid to except ourselves and dance to the beat of our own drum.

I love how Jim Carrey shows the struggles he faces. Many celebrities hide their struggles and problems behind perfect smiles and fancy clothes. Jim lets you into his struggle and encourages you to grow and understand that it's okay to not be okay.
Because a lot of people's version of peace doesn't involve art, reading, etc. It only involves activities that are "cool" or "trendy". Do you know how many people have called me crazy or weird or boring when I have told them that I don't watch TV shows (such as Game of Thrones) and that I prefer watching documentaries on nature or science?
Steak, that's because they're no longer chasing the dollar and if you're not chasing the dollar in western culture, you're wasting your life. I live on the border of a very affluent city with a lot of elder residents. I was telling a male friend how you can find really interesting tools, often antiques at garage sales in this community. My companion started talking about how to tell fake from real gold jewelry. I replied at least 3 times that I wasn't interested in jewelry; that I like tools because I'm a maker and he said, "If you're not looking for something with monetary value that you can pawn, you're wasting your time." My friend's a nice guy, but if it don't have a dollar sign on it, he's outta there.

This year, it seemed to be more impactful than ever...kids have endured so much emotionally through this pandemic and need ART to express themselves! Finishing high school I had never been more confident in my life and I thought that I was ready to show the world its not that hard. I am only 23 now and life has hit me like a brick more times than I remember. Many mental health issues took the forefront of my priorities. I had quickly realized just how naïve I am. Your comment is very underrated. Thank you very much for sharing.
It’s lovely to have people in the lives of our youth that show them that being an individual is not only okay but crucial. Thank you for being that person and seeing uniqueness in a world that applauds conformity. Hugs💕✨

It's true. I love the potential life has, but I can't particularly say I love where I am currently. Here's to all of us getting to where we want/need to be. 🥂
@@oliv23_ I know. That last part was simply for good wishes. I didn't say it was conditional. Whether you "need" to find peace or want a clear mindset. What makes someone happy is oftentimes subjective. Plenty of people we'd think are happy have taken their own lives, sadly. :/
I like the metaphor. "Jesus" is just a manifestation of our better selves to which we all aspire. Too many people are caught up in following others. You KNOW the right things, you KNOW love...so then can you be strong enough to live up to your own vision of glory?
Me too, I had to pause the video and just looked at the art, I felt something looking at his painting a deep understanding a truth that id never understood before, I think I need more god in my life, more love! Thanks Jim, I hope one-way or another you see this comment!
I have never heard him go this long while speaking and not crack a joke. He seems to have reached a place where he is at peace with who he is without all of the showmanship and it’s a beautiful thing to see

@UCBPRP5gd3QKJC913dHo2PEQ Jim Carrey has showcased his depression for a long time, he really needs someone to light him up, I'm not saying that just because he's painting all day not going outside is the main issue. I'm just saying he doesn't look healthy.
Just take a screenshot blow it up and print it out. I couldn't imagine him having a problem with you making copies of his paintings and hanging them is kind of the same thing as having the original
I went to an event on September 23, 2017, at a gallery in Las Vegas. I got to meet him and bought 2 artist proofs of the " Electric Jesus" canvas on metal paintings. I have one for sale if you are interested.
Listening to him as a narrator is surprisingly RELAXING 😌 yeah: he should do audio books. I don't know if he rehearsed this narrative a bit or if he's just speaking spontaneously from the heart. Either way...good stuff...
Every once in a while I come back to this video when I don't feel creative or inspired and his way of describing art just gives me hope and new energy.
"I love being alive" honestly I don't remember the last time I heard someone say that. It's sad really. Most of the time I feel like i'm surrounded by people who have lost their will to live.
@d d Well, I would propose that a lot of what Hollywood stands for is exactly against the teology of humanity (what makes us human, and what we are "meant" to do as people.) So yes, I find it hard to ignore that it is based of pleasure in consumption off of a corrupted network of extremely influencial business men. And yes, I find that makes it more difficult to see the "humanity" in these, for what they are most of the time, puppets.
Jim Carey took my seat at the Emmy’s when I attended the on camera audience (edit: we were instructed by the TV Crew to fill in the seats and instructed to move back as the “celebrities” would find their seats front row.). He walked up, looked down at me.. and said “taking my seat?” And followed the sentence with a very joyful smile to reassure his joke as simply that. I remember how pure his smile felt. What a, human.
@R M art is a matter of opinion. For example, I don't really like 'classic' paintings that a lots of people love like the Mona Lisa, but I really love Jim Carrey's pieces.
"You can find every race in the face of Jesus " I never thought of that, beautifully put and I "feel" how right that statement is. Jim is such a beautiful person and my all time favorite actor, I don't think it's possible for me to ever get tired of his movies 👑
I identify so much with "my room was heaven to me"! My room was the only place no one hit me. Lockdown may be hard on others and I'm sorry for that, but for the first time in my life it's finally okay for me to self isolate without stigma.
I'm 43...........I didn't get to enjoy lockdown. (for some fucking reason being a janitor in a school was considered "essential") I was so happy when I thought I would be. Interestingly, those first few weeks made me love humanity more. (not for myself) I actually saw almost no vehicle traffic. I actually witnessed fathers walk along the creek with their kids. (that is 2 minutes walk from my shitty white trash apartment) I heard fathers tell stories to their kids on that walk. Dogs have never been walked more. I actually also witnessed long term married couples also walking together. (one couple has continued that tradition) (I live in montana........low population per capita) The ONLY thing that changed for me was that I was asked to wear a mask. Interestingly I never get sick and to my knowledge, have never had the flu. For the first time I found a year where the people around me never caught something either. (I've always wondered if I might be some form of a "typhoid Mary".....I don't know) While others were locked down, I was still cleaning the disgusting shit (literally) that I was before. (though less due to no students) I was exposed to even more chemicals as well. Part of the job I suppose. I mourn that initial feeling though. I will never take part in it. It was nice to see people and families actually being humane locally. I don't think I've ever witnessed it with mine own eyes. It spiked right back into hatred in less than a month............fucking humans. How much time you spend looking at yourselves and not seeing anything. I'm human too, much to my chagrin. (not really....but sort of)

After his girlfriend died, he's probably been in a bad place. I feel bad for him, I haven't heard any bad things about Jim, only good things. He seems like a really good guy.
I found the naked honesty in what I just watched to be highly inspiring. If anything it shows who "Jim" really is probably far more vividly than any of his film work ever did. I guess its one thing to make people laugh, but so completely an another thing to convey who YOU truly are. I think viewing life as a voyage of discovery can only be a good thing.
keny chauhan I agree "sensitive" people are the ones who have a hard time sometimes in life but wow do they make awesome people! Always the ones you can talk to and they "get it." Jim is one of those deep people.
Seeing this really felt so inspiring because of how I've fallen out of art over the past year and it's motivating me to try to do something I love again. Jim Carrey is such an intricate person and I love how everyone thinks he's crazy but he's just so... Jim Carrey idk how to explain it, great actor.
It's painful to see someone who brings so much joy, suffer from demons we never knew he had. The man of our childhood memories, stripped down to his purest form. It's beautiful
He lost his girlfriend to drugs. Then relatives of the deceased girlfriend sued him for money and slandered him in public. All great and pure souls go through the toughest situations. Love Jim for the joy he has brought to this world.
I watched this video in February when I fell into a deep depression and I learned so much from this video. I learned that you create your world around you when you are depressed. You have to have the powerful strength to get back up when you have fallen nobody can do it for you I tried that already lol. @@MargetMints Hell yeah, be different! I used to worry about not fitting in, until I grew up and realized that fitting in usually sucks. You'll find that the older you get, you'll notice more and more people do and say really stupid things that make no sense whatsoever. There is rarely any benefit to falling inline with the masses. In the movie, "Good Will Hunting"--I will paraphrase here, because I'm not a savant like Will--the arrogant Harvard student who was called out by Will for trying to impress his friends by quoting obscure passages from textbooks as if they were his own thoughts and analyses (Will knows the books, and cites the quotes as well as finishes them, verbatim). After shutting the guy down, Will then says, "you spent 200 grand on an education that you could have gotten for a buck-fifty in overdue library book fines", to which the guy says, "Maybe so, but you'll be serving fries to my kids while we're on a ski trip in the Hamptons". Without missing a beat, Will says, "yeah, but at least I'll be original."
I had no idea that he was a painter, but listening to him talk so passionately about his work, his passion- was quite refreshing and seeing him so concentrated on his projects is inspiring
Jim Carrey is a survivor of a dark world that could have taken him. Let's honor those who have unfortunately lost that fight. Rest in peace Robin Williams and Chester Bennington.

S0lgewd S0lgewd thats awesome to hear, but really isnt even that deep if you think about it, if people werent different and everyone was the same there would be less “different people” and different is the opposite of original so pretty logical
@tincho Nah they don't mean the same and it's not "frases", also he clearly did quote Jim. Even if he didn't, he must've quoted someone judging from the way he structured his sentence and that quote does not quite exist as it was written in the comment.
@tincho by using quotes "like this". Miss quoting is common, I read this comment and did not agree with it, and was surprise that jim said that, after watching the video, turns out he didn't. I think J K took the liberty to rephrase the quote, but it changed the meaning in the process.
@tincho Jim saying he love being alive, and the art is an evidence of that: in this case, the art is an evidence of his love for life. What JK said was art is an evidence for life it self. Not even close, art is no evidence for life why would not art exist in death ? anyway not the same meaning.
@tincho wow, I think it's the first time i've seen someone change his mind on a youtube comment, you have my respect. (and don't worry about your english i'm french so mine is nothing amazing either haha)
I've always had a tremendous amount of respect for Jim Carrey out of his originality and authenticity. I feel and understand his desire for painting to express his unconscious; something that's full of pain, and other intense emotions. This video inspired me to take up painting on my own, and I think I'm developing an addiction. I've been painting almost every day, and I'll often sacrifice several hours of sleep just to finish a single painting. Thanks for the video, it has certainly been influential to me.
Bless Jim Carrey. Sometimes I'll see things about him in the news that he went crazy, but I just see someone who's handling their inner demons in a healthy and constructive manner. I can't imagine what he's been through in life and how other comedians, like Robin Williams, weren't able to escape what was inside them. Jim has spent his life giving so much joy and laughter, he deserves to find peace in whatever healthy way he chooses. Other people don't have to get it, they just have to respect it.
Love what he mentioned about his work giving him the answers to something the previous year. Same here, I look at past creative projects or journal entries and I see things so different!
He's very introspective too, many people thought he was crazy when he went on his infamous rants in the more recent interviews, but man if they'd actually listen, stop for a moment and think about it, they could perhaps realize there's a meaning to it, and it's constantly happening all around us and to us. Man, Jim is truly someone who tapped into his potential, and he tried to signal to everyone what matters more in life, the connection between us all down to the very matter, and how the outside world is a reflection of our inner worlds. You gotta love that guy, he wasn't afraid to speak his mind for what he believes in. And just a little note, the things he mentioned - I've had them in my mind before that, so it's not that he bamboozled me C:
I'd say he's overrated given that he has so much exposure for his work compared to the tonnes of more talented artists who don't get the attention they deserve because they're not a Hollywood shmooser from dumb and dumber fame
"When your heart is in love you're floating; weightless. But when you lose that love you have to reenter the atmosphere... and it can get pretty rough." Wow! I love that.
Yeah, also that painting was amazing. Never thought I would say that cause I'm not even into art, and I love Jim Carrey movies, but after seeing this I feel like his paintings are an even better legacy of his then his acting career.
for me it didn't work, loosing love is cold, a metheor entering the atmosphere decays because of its heat. it reminded me more of an extremely hot lovestory than of a breakup or loss of someone close.

@Alex art is artefact. It's proof of one's existence. I'm not buying into anything. Art doesn't have to be expensive, so that's a non factor. Artists, although are "normal people", I'm sure feel more alive during the act of creating. I can't speak for all artists, I can only speak on behalf of myself. I believe people who blindly dismiss concepts they don't understand are the stupid ones, but hey. Anyway, where is the study on how "normal" most artists feel? I'd like to see that.
@Alex Well done, Alex. You've missed the point. A piece of shit is a piece of shit. Art leaves behind representations of people's experiences. What's more valuable as an artefact? A painting from the 16th century? Or a preserved turd?

1:28 this is so true. I’ve written songs before they were even relevant to me and then as time passes I connect with them more. Those are usually the best ones too. I definitely think art comes from A very deeply rooted and abstract part of our life experience. If you listen or look closely into any form of expression you can find out so much about a person and their thought process.
The point of this video isn't to show everyone that he knows or is good at painting. The point is that Jim wants to share how he was able to express himself and learn how he could, in a relatively health way, overcome the problems he may be dealing with in life. Colors, or painting is something that he finds joy in and he believes that it may help others too.
