He once said in an interview (because his daughter went on American Idol) that he could "carry a tune, but I don't have a voice people want to hear". It struck a chord with me then because I can absolutely carry a tune, not tone deaf, have rhythm, but my voice is not a good singing voice. I'd be a great backup singer lmao
@@beckycrider3689 As a lead-singer for a band, i have so much respect and appreciation for folks such as youself who know how to stay off the stages, and, the only possible exception to that, for example, if you had this kerokie night once a year, 2drink/1song maximum. Better yet, keep it to your bathroom (we don't wanna see u singing in your car, too, and, we are exceedinly-grateful you would NEVER sing with the windows open, MyChild). Just kidding. i can't even carry a tone, letta lone a tune.
I use to feel that way about him as an actor, but now he has exposed himself as an outspoken kook who pontificates on subjects he knows little to nothing about. Just because he is a famous actor, he thinks he is intitled to lecture us, and has damaged his reputation with his fan base.
"Take me on" and "Everybody wants to rule the world" Two of my favorites from the 80's. Also, two great songs that transcend time and seem to get better every time you hear them. Jim Carey nails this rendition. What an incredibly talented man.
Found this by accident looking for videos of Aha actually singing this song live and not lip syncing. Instead i find this, and i now love Jim Carey more than before. What a champ. Props to him too, i sing and can confirm this is an incredibly hard song to sing.
If I sang a single verse of a song, and turned around and saw B.J. Thomas applauding me ( 1:29 ), no matter how much of a goof I was making out of things I think I'd just take a bow and retire at that point. It could not get any better for me as a performer.
This is an old comment but just in case you didn't catch it, that guy standing in front of the guitarist is none other than BJ Thomas..."Raindrops keep falling on my head"....and...my fav "Hooked on a feeling". He just passed away like 3 months ago so I thought I'd mention it. And yes...Jim Carey is a nutball.
***** I got the joke right off! However, I think it was even funnier that the cup didn't break!!! When the cup finally did break, he took another breath and went at it again. That's funny! I agree, Letterman didn't seem to appreciate it at all. He probably planned to sing the song, because the band was at the ready, but he probably caught him off guard with the cup bit.
+Larry Talbot Bit of a late reply as I only just found this, but I think Letterman was more pissed because he was splashed with liquid. If you look just before Carrey stands up he goes to drink the contents of the mug, but Letterman offers him a handshake, which stops him. So it was Davey boys own fault. But yeah, it was funnier because it didn't break first time.
I got it. It's a take-off on the old Memorex tape TV commercial from the 1970s that ended with the announcer saying, "Is it live, or is it Memorex?" and a cut-away to a shot of a female singer singing a really high note and breaking a glass in the process.
[In Ed McMahon's voice]. You are correct, Sir! This has also been done in some movies and tv shows, usually as a parody. Although typically a wine glass, I though the mug was funnier.
@@tiamat_023 I have seen him sing this about 5 times in the past 10 years and he never tries to hit that note, anymore. maybe he can but I’ve seen no recent evidence of it.
Watched when nature calls for the 500th time the other night still as funny today as it was when it first released in 95 jim carrey is a legend canada should be proud ❤
When Jim Carey transcends this physical plane, the universe and mankind shall shed tears. He is a force of nature. You can feel and see him. (Avatar reference) ❤️
@burteriksson his performances always has massive visual clues as to when the audience were supposed to laugh, without them they wouldn't have the slightest clue it was even supposed to be a comedy or drama from his acting. If he couldn't pull a face he would be flipping burgers for a living.
I love that I’m living in a period with Jim Carry in it. He’s just good 👍🏼 in so many ways. I like to be around him…even if he didn’t say a word (no, I don’t know him , just sense he’s one of those people that doesn’t require actual sound to sense the good presence of him). ❤
I am swedish, first of all I apologize, I missed this magical moment, your performance was extremely good, you can be a star, in Europe we call these singers songbirds, you are one of these, I express reverence for your phenomenal voice, be proud of your presentation, but work a little on the humor, you are already a legend, you will soon be the God of humor. Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪 and enormous respect for everything you have given us with what you have done and will do on film and stage.🙏🎬
@@BurtTurbo because I dont overhype something just because a celebrity does it? I wouldn't necessarily call that being fun. Just realistic and reasonable. All I said was that those we're in fact not very high notes and everyone who knows a little about einging can easily see that it's Not that impressive. Doesnt make it more impressive just cuz Jim Carrey does it... If you wanna hear something impressive go listen to the unplugged version of Aha
@@mortuc1 I completely agree with all this. It's just an octave lower, but he nonetheless could be able to showcase that he has potential on doing scenes that may include some light singing. I don't think he'll be able to perform the song with its original pitch.
I'm surprised he's never done a musical comedy, or if he has, I'm not aware of it. His voice was a little strained on the lowest and highest notes, but in a recording studio with multiple takes, I think he could nail it.
@@JaredBetts- You're right, I didn't think of Cuban Pete in The Mask. Even if I had, I wouldn't have been sure they didn't have a singer dub it. Doesn't seem like they'd have to, though.
I was at a restaurant back in ‘93 that had karaoke. Well, a guy got up to sing this song and, by God, he hit every note just perfect!! Really hard song, I was impressed.
0:35 Being a drummer, to have someone else cue you into the song..that's discipline and that's badass. And that's why I'm sitting at home watching these vids instead of participating.
I thoroughly enjoyed how put off letterman was by Jim breaking the cup and getting coffee everywhere. Dave hands him the towels and gives him that disappointing dad glare 😂
I wonder if Dave knew that would happen. I'm kind of curious how they planned that (if at all). I thought the mug could have been a prop but it still had water in it and took some effort to break. Pretty wild for TV.
Do you know how many people all over the world sang that song for years and the result was all the neighborhood cats left town on the next bus? I give the guy credit, he hit all those big notes, and with a little vocal training he would’ve sounded awesome. Even Barbra Streisand trains for vocals before concerts and in between. That song is not easy to sing! I couldn’t even count how many registers there are in there.
I'm down with that, I hit all these points, I was about 9 when this song came out, waiting, ready, when I was needed... But any better singer was practicing what the song was. I'm not going to show my hurt. I will instead focused on the falsetto parts, scare that coffee cup out of people's hand. Yeah, bitch, I hit that high, Watch this!
@@THEAJFrost 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Lucky you! I was one of the people that sent the cats out of town on the bus! What’s worse, I don’t even know what the words are to this day. I just sang what I heard, they weren’t even real words, so I must’ve sounded like someone’s drunk relative at a wedding!
His singing is the cake... breaking that mug planned or not, is the cherry on top adding another extra 10 minutes of me laughing. Jim Carey is a legend.
His version of « I am the walrus » (with George Martin, 1998 « In My Life ») is absolutely awesome !! Carrey is a great singer ! And not only on Napalm Death songs 😂
My dog was asleep when I started this video. When it ended, I realized she was crying. Crying with big eyes looking at me, obviously asking what the heck was going on. I had to tell her that it’s all OK, took her a little while and reassurance to believe that nothing was wrong with this dude!!! LOL ❤❤❤
Jim just discovered the secret to immortality, he accepted Jesus as his personal savior which is why he’s not acting much anymore since that’s not well thought of out there in that dark place
I remember when he was starting out as a stand-up comedian. What a great career he made for himself. He's not only funny, but he acts and is an actual artist (painting and sketching).
*I'm always impressed with Jim Carrey's performance neither in movies nor outside. He's really the Living Legend that given a huge impact to a worldwide via his talents & skills! But, Litteraly, he's lonely without lover to complete his life. Hopefully, he'll probably find someone whom can spend the rest of his life with. Can't wait to watch him in the new movies....respect from Malaysian.*
*I wish I can be someone as special as his desired but it's too late for me, @Burteriksson, I'm already in relationship. Perhaps, maybe as a good friend indeed....*
Absolutely one of the top songs of the 80s. No matter how many times I hear this song, it always puts a smile on my face and a joy in my heart!!!❤ And he actually did a pretty good job!👏👏👏
It's a terribly over-rated song. I don't dispute the talent of A-ha singing it but it's such a banal song. Good luck to A-ha that it's been used in hundreds of ads because it has spanned generations as a familiar song because of its advertising appeal. Otherwise, Jim Carrey can actually sing although he doesn't quite have the range for this song.
I loved this song so much mostly because of the fun time it was in my life when it came out and amazing video. It always makes me smile, now Jim Carrey who filled our 80s and then when my daughter came in the 90s we loved so many of his movies over and over. He filled with so many laughs on so many levels it seems. And his Letterman show cover of this song was pretty great, we loved his singing in the Cable Guy. What a perfect mix to make me smile today ❤
For some odd reason, just this year. Every time I watch a JC video. My heart ♥️ aches but the pain is in a good way. The reason is, I just lost a very close friend of mine. That friend and I would pretend to play some of Jim role in his movies during our childhood years. Didn’t realize how much time has flew by. Jim is truly a legend.
