***** BECAUSE IT ISN'T WHAT PEOPLE WOULD EXPECT. And I didn't say hilarious, I said humorous. It is ironic. You cannot tell me that at least 75% of Jim Carrey's movies aren't comedies! Just like you cannot say that at least 75% of Leonardo's movies aren't dramas. Seriously, what I said is not an insult.
When I hear that I actually thought it was intended as a comedic remark (though it really wasn't) I was expecting the audience to laugh but I am glad they didn't because it's yeah... deep & true. Wish he had done more dramatic roles.
If I'm not mistaking I believe Jim Carrey is the only actor to win the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama and NOT be nominated for an Academy Award in the same year.
aksm Thats for best Director though, Ben Affleck is so underrated and Jim Carrey should of been nominated for best actor at the oscars for this BUT DONT GET ME WRONG ROBERTO BENGINI DID MUCH BETTER ALONG WITH TOM HANKS, but he should of a got a nomination. This one was no excuse, he did AMAZING in Man on the Moon 1999 which also should of been nominated for best director along with best actor (Jim Carrey) at the oscars, then again they're the experts. If any of you haven't seen Man on the Moon, Suggest you watch it tonight.
Anyone who thinks that Jim Carrey can't act in a drama has to watch "Then Number 23" and "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind." Thumbs up if you've seen either of them and enjoyed them, and which one you liked better.
Megs Smart Thinking Yeah, so true! That was an amazing film as well. Not only did we get to see Jim Carrey play a semi-serious role, but also getting to see what Andy Kaufman was all about. I just remembered him from Taxi. He had a crazy/interesting life!
The Truman Show, Man on the Moon, and Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind and he still hasn't been nominated for an Oscar, WTF Oscars, he's been nominated for every big award except for the Academy Awards, give him a nomination already!!
He knows. But to him as long as he entertains all the people.....that will be his Oscar. Not some stupid statue but the feeling in people's hearts.....
I love the sincerity and love in his acceptance speech. He came close to tearing up when he mentioned his parents and daughter. He is still one of my favourite underrated actors of all time.
I can only surmise that Jim Carrey must've pissed off some people in the Academy because it makes absolutely no sense to me how he could not possibly be even nominated for his performance in The Truman Show. His performance was truly exceptional and the movie is quite possibly my favourite film of all time. PS: The fact that the film wasn't even nominated for best picture pisses me off even more

Jim Carrey is so underrated. I really got respect for him after seeing Man On The Moon, Truman Show, The Majestic, Cable Guy and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.. He's a great actor and deserves better roles. He hasn't made any challenging movies for 7 years now and maybe not a great movie since 2008 (Yes Man).
Ollervo100 Now when i think about it I actually do think it is a challenging role. I don't know why I didn't count that one up. That film and The Majestic is two underrated films.
This has got to be one of the top best acceptance speeches ever. Funny and heartfelt. I love how he chocked up when thanking his daughter Jane and his parents. And I especially loved how he mentioned one of my all time favorite Halloween movies... ONCE BITTEN!! YESSSS!!! LOL! :)
Jim Carrey to this day I think should at least got nominated for an Oscar , roles like in Number 23 , The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the spotless minds well deserved him at least an Oscar Nod .
Thank you for including The Number 23 in that, such an unfairly maligned movie, and his performance in that was great. I would also include Man on the Moon.

his speech was one of the nicest,sweetest I've heard...everyone else is crying,saying some stupid cliches so that they could sound more dramatic....unlike jim who was so charming and natural...i'm glad he won it
It still pisses me off to this day, that he did not get an Oscar nom for "ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND". Jim Carrey made me cry in that film. Jim wass awesome, and he is still awesome to this day!!! God bless him!!!
Jim was incredible in Truman Show and Eternal sunshine! He is definitely more than a "funny face" .Hope we will see him in more serious films forwards.
How Jim Carrey has not received an Oscar for some of his work is beyond me. He is so much more than Ace Ventura and the Mask. I say the same thing about Leo DiCaprio who pushes his boundaries in every film he does. It is easily the biggest crock on the planet. Robin Williams only getting one Oscar for his body of work is a crime against the arts in my opinion. I hope to see an Oscar for Carrey and DiCaprio, but especially Carrey.
I just hope to hvn Tom Cruise wins one just for his devotion and willingness to risk his liFe to entertain people! I fewrcfor him. He is too old to be doing such dangerous stunts. They need to refuse him. There needs to be more safety control by parties unpaid by that movie.
Comedic actors are WAY better at Drama then dramatic actors are better at Comedy. And I think the reason why is that Comedy is insight into Drama. You can have Drama without Comedy, but not vice versa. I was the class clown, and everybody thought I was just oh so funny. Yeah, there's a reason why some choose comedy. It's necessary.
My personal opinion is that the Academy always nominate actor's who personified 90% drama, but the comedians like Jim Carrey and Ben Stiller never have a nomination because their characters are from a "comedy" movie.. i think at least Jim Carrey deserves 3 nomination for The Truman Show, Man On The Moon and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

Jim Carrey is light years ahead of most people while still being here. Some understand but many look like deer caught in your headlights. Jim pays attention to detail in his life and that gives him the freedom to insult people and institutions and tell them you are on the wrong track but in a benign and humorous way. I always loved George Carlin for his humor and intellect about the human condition and Jim is right up there with George.........
