I live near Voorhees, N.J. CZW was running at the original Skate Zone, which is a twin rinks youth hockey facility that is also the practice rink for the Philadelphia Flyers. They have a floor rink as well for indoor lacrosse and street hockey, and that is where CZW ran their shows. Before them, ECWA (East Coast Wrestling Association) ran there after Jim Kettner retired and sold the promotion. I never understood why the Flyers would allow them there. In the past, I heard a story that Johnny Kashmere, then a student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, got the college to book CZW in their gym. What happened was the promotion destroyed the place. Bleacher, chairs, locker stalls were ruined, causing several thousand dollars in damage. The school didn't sue CZW. They didn't sue Kashmere. They sued his PARENTS! Combat Zone has had a lovely tradition of rarely running in the same building twice and in the process, damaged the reputations of the rest of us, who couldn't get into buildings because of the things that they had done. One of my mentors, who broke me into the business, was Les Morgan, who worked under the names "Dirty Morgan", Toolie MacTavish and Little Abner for Nick Gulas in Tennessee. His daughter, Heidi Lee Morgan, wrestled in the 1990s for WWF, WCW, etc. Together, we had a wrestling school called Ringmasters. We had a few wrestlers come in and train with our students as they passed through the area, Paul Diamond and Pat Tanaka being two. They imparted great advice and wisdom to our students. But the CZW kids that would come in, even some of the kids from the Monster Factory, had to be retrained because they were being taught improperly. One kid was thrown out of our school by Heidi Lee because he refused to post on a hip toss. He said he could get better elevation without it. She said, "Good. Keep doing that. The demo tape you send to WWF will end up in the trash can 30 seconds after they see your version of the hip toss." All they cared about was a gimmick, a ring name, with very little concern for training properly. Even their bumps were suspect. It got to the point where, whenever a CZW wrestler came to us to train, Les Morgan would show them the door.

Lio Rush was a CZW heavyweight champion. 5'6", 160 pounds and he was a HEAVYWEIGHT champion.

Death Matches sound like a hep c pond

Cactus Jack and Terry Funk are the best workers, with the Hardcore style. These matches do have to take place the right way, and the right time. With no extremely dangerous B.S in my view.

Sami is a total goof. He's trying to build his name off of having an incident with Cornette. Sami is dog shit in the ring and once you've seen his act 1 time then you've seen 98% of his matches he's ever had. He asked for his release from WWE cuz he knew he was on the chopping block and wanted to beat them to it so he could brag that he quit them.

I absolutely agree 100% on the Shane Strickland thing. Shane is an amazing wrestler who has a great look, great work, pretty good promo, and has the confidence and poise of a future star. He shouldn’t have ever been in these deathmatches with the skewers in his head or the barbed wire or glass with the talent he has. The only exception to the rule was his Lucha Underground persona where him and AR Fox had this brutal war of a match which is built up through their characters and it makes sense they would go that far to hurt one another. Thankfully he’s making his nxt debut in a few weeks and couldn’t be happier for him

The second Tournament of Death that Moxley did with this Mr. Callihan featured 13 guys. It was postponed a day for rain. Hyde said the tickets are 20 bucks. The announced attendance was 150. The gate was 3,000 bucks?!? Moxley had two death matches in this thing going through thumb tacks and light tubes and he probably didn't make a hundred bucks. Actually 13 guys. He might not have made 50.

Was waiting to listen to this since I saw what sami did. My reaction was ohhh shit. Could clearly see Jim was raging, surprised he managed to restrain himself at the time. I wouldn't...

You know...I like to watch "ultra violent" wrestling from time to time, mainly because if they are going to do it, might as well watch stupid people do stupid things to each other. Who doesn't love a GOOD hardcore match. The problem with this shit is...These typically are NOT good hardcore matches. As Jim stated, they don't sell it as a real thing. They sell it as a performance with obvious corporation then take selfies with the fans. Plus it's only good in small amounts. At least I feel, and it is to me, it's only interesting/entertaining in small amounts. More than 2 light tube/barb wire matches on a show, I don't care to see anymore for a while. It doesn't keep interest like good, athletic/struggle like wrestling matches with no obvious corporation

One of the most embarrassing things as a wrestling fan was when some guys at work thought that these death/outlaw matches were real. They could not believe that a someone was allowing themselves to be piledrived through glass or thrown through barbe wire tables/ropes.

Since its never gonna go back to what WE want Jim , I'd take NWA 80s style mixed with mid 90s ajpw with a slight mix of pwg and hardcore ....when called for . What y'all think ????

I cant get into them way to crazy hardcore matches...smh Like them shows that are full hardcore the whole show, but i like chair shots, table spots that's ok but not the whole show. Its just over kill.

Japanese Death match wrestling was just an extension of the Texas / Southern Death match. As a once off or gimmick match ever now and then for the building to the end of a story I get it. But promotions like CZW needs to go away! Or hire Joey Ryan and Orange Cassette I'd love to see them beat each other with light tubes.
