Zack Ryder got an anti push. I’ve never seen someone so actively sabotaged by their own company. In fact the only real push he got was off of a stage by Kane.

The Heartbreakers story reminded me of something WWE seems to be correcting. They sign Eli Drake, they want to change his name. Fine, now he's LA Knight. He gets over in NXT, then he goes to Smackdown, and he's Max Dupri, not even just a name change but new gimmick. Thankfully they've reset him but Retribution, they all suffered the gimmick call up change.

Daniel Bryan is possibly the greatest example of a wrestler the people made a star, but WWE had to had its arm twisted in order to receive a proper push, and even then it was halfhearted and shortlived, probably because of Vince's proverbial dislike for pushing small guys.

On fans chanting for someone as a rib: at a recent AEW show the crowd chanted all night long for one of the ring crew named Bob. Every match had “we want Bob” and “Bob! Bob! Bob!” Chants. Every time Bob was visible the crowd cheered. It eventually led to the company to put Bob in the ring in between the dynamite and other shows recording and have him have a “rock, paper, scissors” match with his son (also named Bob.) I think they were hoping it would shut everyone up, but it just made things worse. I spent the night wondering how confused the viewers at home must be listening to the audio

A push is having more TV time every week and working towards a championship opportunity, possibly getting your brand name as wrestler more merch sells or having a (good) championship run. And getting over is the crowd loving what you're doing wether you are a heel or a babyface. This my answer before watching the video.

The movie 'Morbius' is the perfect example of something getting over as a rib. So much so that it got re-released in theatres and flopped AGAIN. 😂

A lot of good points made. One of the reasons why Vince McMahon became loathed by some later in life was his ego (or his underlings' egos) got in the way of pushing people who got over on their own. In many instances, an NXT talent coming up would be essentially unknown to Vince. The WWE Chairman would just summarily decide who they were going to be on the main roster, without any understanding or knowledge of why they were being promoted. War Machine is a prime example. I would caution on the use of 'guaranteed contract'. WWE talent sign contracts. Guaranteed implies they will be in effect throughout their tenure, which isn't necessarily the case. WWE can release anyone at any time (barring someone who may have a contractual clause preventing in) and be absolved of any obligations... and prevent main roster talent from working for a major competitor for 90 days & an NXT talent from doing likewise for 30 days. WWE must still pay talent for that time period.

Genuinely Getting over is when the fans get invested in you. People get confused and often think cheers for catch phrases or poses is the same thing.

Rusev Day and The Acclaimed were over. Wheeler and Garcia are getting pushed. In both those cases of Over the office killed them or is trying to kill them once they get a hold of it.

I remember Reigns got a push, but was over like a fart in church. Then he got leukemia, and came back and got the fuck over.

Modern guys need to realize it is really freaking rare for creative to have a good enough idea to get you over. It's all been done before and coming up with GOOD new ideas is really hard. Instead 99% are handed pure dog shit and the impetus is on you to get it over. My favorite example is Too Cool, Scottie too hottie and Brian Christopher. Russo (sorry lol) literally just told them "so like bros, what if you think you're super cool but you're really not?" That's a shit stain (lol) of an idea if I ever heard one but they bought into it so hard they got CRAZY over. Crowds went nuts for the worm and then later add Rikishi and GOTDAMN talk about Rovers over from Dover. Of course the opposite example is Kane. But stuff like that is the exception not the rule and never forget the god awful Gimmicks he had to go through before getting to Kane. And even then can anyone really argue Kane was a NEW good idea? Or was it really the execution that got him over?

Talk about Push & Feed, when a wrestler is pushed as a major force only to be fed to lose to Goldberg, or Hogan or a Champion

It’s like how members of big government are not very responsive to individual needs and usually just plain don’t care to address local or regional matters and are more focused on helping themselves , when you have ‘big wrestling’ like WWE with hundreds and hundreds of employees, not everyone cares about the individual wrestlers or the bottom line as much as they do their own self inerests. It’s the problem with running things on such a large scale , you get a lot of indifferent or selfish employees who aren’t operating for the good of the company as whole

A push is the company trusting you to be more than filling time. Getting over is meeting and exceeding the expectations that trust brings. Sure, the fans help by cheering for who they would like to be in that role but there is no pressure no expectation.

This is why WWE and aew need to stop the guaranteed contracts! If your over on your own regardless of storyline, you will be on the show! Now everyone is guaranteed money, so they the wrestlers don't care weather we like the product or not.

With the Heartbreakers, this is exactly what happened with them in WWE. Someone's in creative had to make their mark on the world, so instead of doing everything that made the Heartbreakers great they tried to remake them in the hopes they could take credit for their success. Instead, they ruined them for the fans. This is very much like Kathleen Kennedy and the Star Wars francise.

Super John Cena & The current Reigns of Terror for the last 7 years are the greatest examples of getting a push and being forced down our throats. Thought at least Cena did get over on his own before the Super John Cena run where Vince had him bury so many young talents. Roman Reigns has been Vince's boy the last 7 years and forced upon us, not even The Rock could stop Roman from being booed when he won the Royal Rumble.

The fun thing about this topic is: most fans aren't as smart to the business as they think they are because WWE often makes storylines out of wrestlers losing and getting beat up regularly. Fans go online to complain "WWE is holding Daniel Bryan back and doesn't want to push him" Literally from 2011 to 2015 the dude won every belt available for him to win at that time. I STILL see ppl saying "we dragged them kicking and screaming into pushing him". Lmao marks. Then... my favorite thing about that timeframe was how many wrestlers co-opted the yes chant. I'd never argue Bryan wasn't over but most wrestlers ppl think were over because ppl sung their theme or chanted for them or whatever: if you'd think or say "Oh Idc about so and so because they beat him like a drum" that wrestler was never over with you. You CARE about a wrestler that's over. You get mad when they lose. Happy when they win. Indifference... you just liked doing the chant or singing the song.

A push usually results in getting over. But in the case of Zack Ryder/The Acclaimed/Daniel Bryan they got a push because they got over by themselves

Giving a push to a talent that has gotten over by themselves is the best strategy That's how John Cena was created Vince stopped doing that in last decade to new talents Triple H won't do that, he'll do the right thing and create the next big names of the business.
