@@Kappa31 Maybe they could've tried, but let's be honest, that character was made for an indy audience and thus, the WWE fans who mostly aren't aware of the jokes of some characters like that one probably wouldn't take to it. He didn't talk under the mask, which is something WWE wouldn't have liked if he'd kept it going, so I'm glad the gimmick went away when he signed because of how verbally entertaining he is now.

Love Jim, but he's still very narrowminded in a lot of ways, and Generico is one example. Now I'd say that Sami probably benefited from taking off the mask and speaking, but especially in this age of geek culture and where hardcore fans make up a good portion of the mainstream wrestling audience, I think he's mistaken in saying that El Generico wouldn't be marketable. He'd get a pop just off reputation alone, but the gimmick was quirky and offbeat enough that I could see it appealing to fans in the same way that someone like Bailey does, it's versatile enough that it lends itself to comedy - which WWE is big on - and Sami himself is talented enough to communicate a wide range of emotions through body language alone - which was half the reason he and Steen got as big as they did in ROH.

I know, right? Zayn is a great worker, no doubt. But he wouldn't have worked in WWE as El Generico beyond middle of the bottom. At least as Zayn, he can be the guy he is meant to be. Best of all, you can have a rivalry against a cocky heel Midcard Champ (but NOT Owens) who says Zayn hasn't earned a shot, then defends against Local Talent who are clearly meant to take a dive. Builds up to a PPV, where the cocky champ says He will NEVER wrestle Zayn. He then defends against... El Generico. A small section of the fan base will get it. The rest won't and will be legitimately surprised when he takes the belt off of the Champ and unmasks... revealing Sammy Zayn.

@@Thecallmemisterajp but he's not been proven wrong. Zayn is now a world known entity without his mask, and his mouth has gotten him work as an on screen manager, and over more as well. Jim's issues with him as been hard to work with and a silly gimmick, not ever his talent or ability.

James Darnell from the deadlock podcast, or whatever the fuck, is lying. It's incredibly out of character for Cornette to want wrestlers to fight MMA style when he always got pissed off at people who try to do it in one way or the other. Cornette hates strong style, which is wrestling combined with martial arts. He hated the brawl for all, which was a shoot fighting tournament in the middle of RAW, and the whole reason why he hates Matt Riddle is because Riddle mixes MMA style offense with pro wrestling. Cornette butted head with Owens because he wanted Owens to lose weight and cut his hair. Nowadays Kevin Owens is main eventing big time pay per views in the WWE and guess what? He looks a lot less fat and his hair's short.
