The key here is, without the Mr McMahon villain character, how does the Attitude Era in WWF play out? The Stone Cold character relied heavily on having Mr McMahon to feud with.
@robintst

Heck it's even bigger than that. Vince was always the final decision maker, if he was in prison for that 11 year sentence he was facing and the Creative is left to Jerry, just how different would the whole WWF look without him by 1997?

Another factor to consider: in real life, I've heard that Steve Austin was NOT on the best terms with the Jarretts (he hated Jeff Jarrett and refused to work with him later on in WWE and I don't think he was very happy with Jerry Jarrett either due to some type of financial problem he had with him years ago). Does this mean that Steve Austin stays in ECW when he gets fired from WCW and ends up in ECW during 1995 and permanently stays there? Probably not since ECW at that time wasn't paying a huge amount of money and WWE was. If Steve Austin wants big money, he would have to go to WWE during 1996 since ECW wasn't paying enough and WCW had fired him and didn't want him back. However, with Jerry Jarrett in charge, does Jerry Jarrett give Steve Austin a proper push or does he leave him in "mid card hell" stuck in the Ring Master gimmick permanently? It's a possibility, especially when Jeff Jarrett and Steve Austin start having personal issues with each other, Jerry isn't going to push his son Jeff to the side for Steve. Steve Austin might get fed up with the Ring Master crap and he eventually finds his way back to ECW during the period when ECW stars starting getting more money (around mid 1997 or by early 1998 Steve returns to ECW). So this could turn into a situation where WWE remains stale, WCW reigns supreme as the # 1 wrestling promotion during it's NWO era, but ECW gets a very huge push by having Steve Austin in his prime. The long term end result of all of this is WWE remaining in a permanent stale 2nd place, WCW eventually implodes on itself (mainly because WCW's worse enemy was WCW. Sadly, WCW was it's own worse enemy) and ECW manages to rise into a # 1 position in some way over time and doesn't go out of business and becomes financially stable. Just something to think about.
@Jennifer_Lewis_Beach_Living
If Vince still ran the show while behind bars AND Jarrett adapted the best of “Southern Wrestling” to appeal to a casual audience AND Pat Patterson still had considerable creative influence in the company, then yes, the WWE would have still beaten WCW. If Jarrett ran creative in WWE like he ran Memphis, WCW would have won the war. Brian Last is right. WWE won the war because Vince was willing to change his programming, even if it was to a style that he didn’t like. I don’t know if Jerry Jarrett would have been willing to change.

I think all the comments here re:AOL/ Time Warner not wanting wrestling are missing a massive point. By the time they came in WCW was a horrid brand tanking money. JJ running WWF at that time would’ve lead to two things: Vince Russo would not have gotten a shot in creative (and if he did, he wouldn’t have lasted) and the WWF would’ve tanked in popularity was below the point they got to. This means that the pressure on Bischoff to hot shot WCW every other week wouldn’t have been so great, more talent would’ve naturally jumped over when the WWF continued to struggle and even if Bischoff still burns out snd had to be replaced in 99, they weren’t doing it with Russo (as he would’ve had no track record) instead they’d have to turn to someone like Paul Heyman (who’s ECW might also have struggled earlier without McMahon’s chequebook). Come the merger, WCW could still have been a moneymaking brand and something AOL/TW would want to keep around. It’s a fascinating what if.

WCW self-terminated. It was losing tens of millions when it went under. It wasn't like the WWF needed a huge war chest to buy it or the WWF was writing huge cheques to pick off Goldberg, Bret Hart, Kevin Nash, Hulk Hogan, DDP, Sting etc. Gradually losing the drawing power of all those stars from December 1997 to March 2001 was all the work of WCW, who also managed to drive out great midcard talent like Jericho, Benoit, Saturn, Guerrero, and Malenko who could have been drawing a lot of money by 2001-2002 with the right booking. That's fundamentally different from ECW, which was killed off by the WWF and WCW doing well enough in 1998-2001 to pinch all of their talent. If ECW had kept its top stars, they could have probably muddled along for a long time, and at least managed a dignified transition into a WWE developmental area like OVW.

Don't know why anyone is surprised by this answer. Remember Jim Cornette used to hate WWF's cartoon wrestling, until he worked for WCW and got to know Jim Herd. Jim Cornette has always said Vince McMahon had never been in a fight before and had a tendency to overcorrect. That all WWF needed to do was hold on and let WCW tank, that all WWF needed was top stars drawing money and could have done with less crap in the mid card. But really, fans of the "Monday Night Wars" tended to say "Watch WCW for the mid card, watch WWF for the main events.", so I don't think this is even unique to Jim Cornette per se. I think a lot of people more so doubt Jerry Jarrett because he gave up on TNA. They know him less for his reputation of fixing territories than for halfheartedly promoting a questionable product for a few years before turning on his son, burying it, and sending Vladimir Kozlov to WWE.

If Jerry Jarrett was so great Vince wouldn’t have put him out of business. Pat Patterson would’ve been running the show. I don’t think people realize how important and how much Pat did for Vince and WWF/E. I’m not talking about nonsense either.

The Time Warner merger is possibly the biggest reason WWE put WCW in the ground... If WCW took off a few years earlier and was stronger/more established who knows what would have happened. So many career trajectories are changed especially Mic Foley, Steve Austin, Bret Hart, Benoit/Jerico, etc.

I think in all honesty, IF Jerry Jarrett had taken over in '93, WWF would NOT have survived and we certainly wouldn't have seen more of the "big men" champions like Taker or Diesel or Sid be shown. Jerry was more than stuck in his own ways of "I'll do it the way I WANT to and that's bring back the old "Southern wrasslin'"!" and it wouldn't have worked, because people would have either a) turned off the television or b) tuned into WCW.

Jarrett could have done alright, but NO WAY would that time have blown up like it did without Stone Cold going up against the Mr. McMahon character. I do not believe Stone Cold would be as memorable if even remembered as he is today without that set of circumstances that fell in there lap. Might have still gotten The Rock in a sense, but remember that kicked off because of Stone Cold as well. Still would be interesting but not as big.

I used to watch Memphis wrestling as a kid and Jerry Jarrett had legit must see stories going on every week. You just had to tune into tv at 11 am every Saturday morning to see how things unfolded from the matches at Mid-South Coliseum. Him and Lawler legit had you believing these live action soap operas were real.

I think WCW would have survived if McMahon had gone to jail for one simple reason: Without McMahon, Russo wouldn't have ever been on the creative team. Without that credit, he could never have become WCW booker and not lost them $88 million dollars in a single year. Maybe Jamie Kellner would have canceled WCW on Turner anyway, but without Russo it might not have happened.

Maybe he pushes scott hall more and there's no nwo as we know it. Bret possibly doesn't get his large contract and if that happens there's no screwjob. Does Lawler get the belt at some point? Jerry thought the world of randy savage. Does he come back? Does Shawn get held down or fired or do his recreational activities cause a spiral? Does Jerry get HHH in 95? Does nash get let go for not drawing? Does the whole clique get fired? I think this scenario changes everything about wrestling. 95 and 96 laid the groundwork for the turnaround for all of wrestling. I think that that NWO either doesn't happen or doesn't have the significance we remember due to a change in cast. I think there could be an attitude Era if Jerry takes the role as the usurper to Vince like a "I stole your company and I'm gonna steal your wife too." I don't think the ratings will be as high because I dont think WCW's ratings would be that great. The competition drove the ratings. Oh and Owen would still be alive.

For all of Vince’s flaws and there are many, since he took over WWF in 83-84, how many uber-over guys have come from anywhere else. Ric Flair started in 81 and he is a legend. Anyone else? Goldberg. No one else really is a mainstream person that Vince did not make. Hall, Nash are not anything without VKM. Cornette is great but he loves pre-90s stuff too much. I love that part even more too. Just being impartial.

No. Jerry never had the book in TNA. Maybe he should have, but rather than try to fix it he became disgusted with what the promotion had become, with what Jeff Jarrett allowed it to become, though Jeff and Jerry patched up after Jeff got muscled out and failed to buy it back from Panda Energy.
