@@stevew7571 he was being carried by Sarge into a main event program. Being a lucky MFer. Then dropped back down to where he belonged after Sarge left, never to sniff past 3rd match on the card again. Pvt. Nelson was the talent among Sarge's Corp. Or at least the one that found a gimmick that got him further anyway.

Jesus this comment just brought me back to my childhood, lol. GI Joe and wrestling, mostly Jim Crockett's NWA, were my two passions as a kid. I would try and make my Joes represent certain wrestlers. I remember almost all of them. I had a native american Joe named "Spirit" who was my Wahoo McDaniel. There was "Recondo" whos mustache made him Paul Jones. "Quick Kick" was Ricky Steamboat. I forget there names but two of Zartans dreadnoks were my road warriors. "Dr. Mindbender" was bald so he was Gary Hart. "Roadblock " was the Junk Yard Dog. And I remember there was a blonde guy in a Hawaiian shirt named "Chuckles" that was my Ric Flair who I would team up with three of sgt slaughters "renegades" to make my own 4 horseman. Good times! I wish I still had them. I think I owned just about every GI Joe figure between 85 and 90. They all became hand me downs to my nephews and are long gone today.

This might be my favorite RU-vid comment of all time, so I will gladly chime in.... I was never a big collector of Joes, but I had plenty of other toys to make my fed, from WWF to He-Man to Dick Tracy to Captain Planet to Power Rangers.... Captain Planet's Duke Nukem was my tallest action figure, so he chokeslammed his way to many victories and the Winged Eagle. The Red Ninja Ranger had the most articulation, so he was favorite to throw everyone around with. The Black Ninja Ranger superkicked the competition. Blue Ninja Ranger threw the Roaring Elbow with pinpoint precision. The Black and Red Zeo Rangers were the Brothers of Destruction. Dick Tracy and Sam Ketchum were the biggest babyface tag team I had. However, the king of my ring was the ultimate Power Rangers baddie....Lord Zedd. Putting many opponents away with his dreaded DVD, followed by his devastating tope rope leg drop. He ruled with an iron fist, until a debilitating leg injury derailed his career ( his leg broke off, and I had to superglue it back on. He was never the same. Sigh.) Those were the days.

@Hammerhead547
@Hammerhead547 3 месяца назад
My introduction to Sgt, Slaughter didn't actually come from seeing him on AWA or WWF tv. It came from and old USHRA (United States Hot Rod Association) videotape called Blood, Sweat And Gears where he and his "Battle Batallion" (a bunch of local indie guys from the area) were featured doing a three round tug of war against Bigfoot as a special attraction during the USHRA's tour in 1987. I'm fairly sure that the footage used in the video was actually shot at the USHRA event at the Metrodome in Minneapolis in january of 1987 because the video was released in the summer of that year and pretty much all of the footage used in its production was culled form tv broadcasts in the late months of '86 and the early months of '87.
@DefendYoungstown
@DefendYoungstown 3 месяца назад
I vaugely remember the tug of war with Bigfoot stuff... another thing people forget with exactly how big Bigfoot was back then. Also, wasn't there a later version of the "Battle Batallion" where Slaughter was swapped with Hogan? And I think it was also about the time when Gravedigger became the draw for the trucks instead of big blue?

@DefendYoungstown WCW did a monster truck sumo match at Halloween Havoc in the late 90's (I want to say '98) where hogan and the giant each had a custom bodied truck, hogan won the match and the segment ended ended with giant falling off the roof of Cobo Hall. Both of the trucks used were built by Bigfoot 4X4X4, one was a reskinned bigfoot 14 and the other was an old snakebite truck from 1994. They actually had bob chandler on the broadcast as an "expert commentator" for the match, but they didn't explain who he was or that his company built the trucks.
@Hammerhead547
@Hammerhead547 3 месяца назад
@@ethankeller1835 There's also a hilarious bit at the end where there's a "music video" for big bad and blown and sarge is standing in the back of a super modified 4X4 pulling truck miming along to the song on guitar, but he's not even trying to pretend he's playing along too it. But the funniest part is that the guitar he's using is a budweiser logo shaped guitar that they scotch tapped a piece of white printer paper that says "slaughter" on it too, so it's a budweiser shaped logo guitar that says "Slaughteriser" instead.

First knew Sarge through GI Joe, then later found him in classic wrestling. The thing that always sticks with me now though, that I didn't find out until a few years ago, was that there were some GI Joe fanatics and toy collectors that hated the Sarge! I remember watching AWA way back. They did an interesting ongoing segment where there was a big buildup into who the next recruit was going to be into Camp Slaughter. That was back in the day when the most exciting thing was when you got a big star from another territory to jump ship and make a surprise debut into your conference. There was a huge buildup and speculation which major star they would get. Then when they finally made the intro in a Jungle setting Sarge called him out and out comes the 170 w no muscle pasty Greg Gagne wearing a bandana and playing a Rambo character. I remember turning off the tv in disgust and took quite a break from AWA after that, was tired of Verne over promoting himself when well past his prime and then later his version of George Gulas, Greg.

Buddy Rose is in some of that footage with Slaughter, and so are Doug Somers and Chris Taylor. On the WWE Dusty Rhodes DVD, there's footage of a tag match with Rhodes and Murdoch vs Robinson and Muraco, and you can see Slaughter, Iron Sheik, Flair, Patera, Bob Bruggers and Buddy Rose sitting on the side of the ring near one of the cameras.

I was a little kid during the GI Joe cartoon time and I loved Sgt. Slaughter. I thought he was a mean, kick your teeth out kinda guy, then I saw him in interviews later and I was stunned. He's soft spoken and approachable, total opposite of what I thought as a kid. 😄

I guess the Gleason movie was "Soldier In The Rain" where he starred with Steve McQueen, I think. 1960s movie made between Gleason's TV days with CBS.

Okay, the David Schulzt promo had me rolling because you just don't find promos like that today where the wrestler is allowed to really go after his opponent in the funniest way possible. Anyway, I didn't know Slaughter was from Minnesota because they always billed him from Cameron South Carolina.

I grew up in Connecticut, and when he would do autograph signings around the state, he’d drive the camo caddy to the signing. You’d see him driving that around the state.

I started watching wrestling around the time Sgt. Slaughter won the WWF title from The Ultimate Warrior. I was only 5 so I didn't understand the backstory behind the Iraqi sympathizer gimmick. I just wanted Hulk Hogan to beat him lol. I saw GI Joe for the first time a few months later and when I saw that I really became a fan of Sgt. Slaughter. When he became commissioner, he was perfect for the role. Stone Cold stunned him and insulted his weight, DX wore those shields with wipers on them and exposed Brian Pillman for not having broken his arm. I never knew he had a lazy eye until I watched this show. I think this is high on my list in the series but the Scott Hall one is really good as well.

That Patterson match he was bleeding like a pig at a slaughter house. It was a really good match. Saw him in cage matches in Maple Leaf Gardens. Steamboat and Youngblood.

Yeah I was 9 or 10 when Slaughter did the Iraq thing and I was in shock. He was a GI Joe!!! I didn't know what a work was but I did know that wrestling was a show. And I was glued to the TV. This heel turn, macho man and the cobra, Earthquake squishing Jake the snake's snake. WWE was FN insane and I'm so glad that slaughter had the balls to be a bad guy. As devastating as it was to see a GI Joe turn bad, it was awesome to watch

I remember when Sgt. showed up in WWF. I got to see him live a number of times. I'm pretty sure I have pictures of him vs Backlund from Philly, I'd have to dig them up. One of my favorite angles ever, ever was when he became an Iraqi sympathizer, and won the title. I just thought it was insane that they did that, it was a volatile time, and in a lot of ways it was amusing, but non the less still a crazy idea.

The "Pocono's" bloody match incident that his wife refers to that kinda traumatized their daughters. Reminds me of when Mic Foley's wife said his kids were traumatized by the chair shots in a Mankind vs The Rock I quit match.
