I was listening to this at work with it minimized when my boss came in to ask me to look something up. I opened up full screen to the artwork of the polaroid of Jim. There was silence followed by a good laugh. Excellent job on the artwork as always. PS. my 60 year old coworker said her uncle used to take her to matches and help take down the rings so she got to interact with different wrestling personalities. She said that Bobby Heenan was the nicest one she ever met and she never understood why he was so mean in the ring.
@Barfbagdontsag
@Barfbagdontsag Год назад
Ran into Heenan at a Truck Stop when I was a kid and asked him how I become a wrestler. He pointed to my father and said “Is that your dad?” I said “yes”. He said “well, you gotta stay in school and become a doctor.” Walked away. I didn’t understand but my dad thought it was hilarious.

‘Magnum TA’ was one of the first wrestlers I remember seeing when I was a kid. Maybe ‘the’ first. And he was easy to root for. Because as a kid in the 70s, it was EASY to boo ‘Nikita’. Am kind of with Brian (can't believe am saying that). Not a real fan of the Dark Side producers. They have shown their true selves. This was ok. They did not mention Tully, which was a integral feud with Magnum. I just laugh at the comments on non-WWE guys, cause I guarantee there will be multiple mentions of Vince for whatever reason, mostly 'what ifs', which are always dumb cause you never know how people adapt or change in certain situations.

I think it’s a matter of interpretation. I think Brian interprets Documentaries to be A-Z on everyone’s life and career. I see documentaries as TV shows and TV shows are supposed to tell a story and entertain. The point of the Magnum story was to tell the rise and the fall and the redemption. So what they didn’t talk about one specific match? Again I’m not saying you’re wrong I just don’t think not mentioning Tully is that big of a deal.

Dark Side inaccuracies: they could have mentioned he won the North American title in Mid South. The "I Quit" match with Tully. No mention of the belly to belly suplex. Its implied in the short match with Nikita. Suddenly he's US heavyweight champ. It glosses over what got him there. Just saying. Also, the Foreshadowing picture with Kerry Von Erich... no context. Also, he used to be able to walk after the accident. Now he's in a wheelchair. Did he worsen? Needs explanation.

A good example of building to the title win and booking the show to reflect the narrative they want to get across is with Sting vs Flair GAB1990. They had built up Sting as the obvious successor to Flair for a while. When that GAB came around it was basically set up to get them to Sting beating Flair in the main event. They would've done something similar with Magnum and it would've been great. Sad story. At least he did well in life after the ring.

Most likely he would've never been used to his full potential much like a lot of guys that jumped over to the WWF around that time and he knew that. Hell, Dusty Rhodes was in the WWF for a brief stint, got over with the fucking polka dots and he never even won the Intercontinental Title. The highest Koloff probably would've gone would him being built up just to be fed to Hulk Hogan. But it's hard to predict what might have been. We'll never really know for sure.

That amateur wrestling background is always a plus to have, for Professional Wrestlers (i.e. "Dr.Death" Steve Williams, Bret "Hitman" Hart", Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Brad Armstrong, "Gentleman" Chris Adams, "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff, Brickhouse Brown, Adrian Adonis, Roddy Piper, Brian Blair, Steve Kern, Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson Ole Anderson and MANY more). Meh. Magnum TA's accident was definitely not national news. It was heavily covered in the Crockett Territories, but out West it barely created a blip outside pro wrestling magazines in grocery stores. Nobody watched Crockett on the west coast unless they had cable and loved wrestling. Moreover, I'm so tired of people saying Magnum TA looked like Tom Selleck. No he didn't. They both had mustaches. Terry Allen resembled 1980s Sam Elliott a hell of a lot more than he did Tom Selleck.
