This is fantastic! The guy behind Jim Croce is Maury Muehleisen, who died with Jim. Great guitarist also. Check out 'One Less Set Of Footsteps'. And, are there tabs for the hambone part?

I saw his son A.J Croce and didn’t know that all Jim’s music was done in 18 months before he passed

He released albums over like 7 years, I think you misunderstood whatever point he was making

He released an album in 1966 but did hit the charts until a 3 record deal in 1972 with ABC Records, he died in 1973, so I think A.J. Knew what he was talking about 😊

The guy sitting behind Jim, Maury Muehleisen, was the better guitarist of the two, a big part of the sound and arrangement. Sadly they were both killed in the same plane crash. Also check out Operator; I heard that song on the radio for years without realizing how moving the lyrics are.

So weird that you didn't know Jim Croche. Look deeper into his stuff and you'll find a lot of great stuff to augment your show that no one is playing but everyone knows even if they don't know that they know it.

I was a waitress at Tampa airport in the early 1970s in an expensive cocktail lounge, but it destroyed my interest in Jim Croce, because his album was played over and over and over and over again, to the point where I felt like I was in hell. It's really too bad, but this renewed my interest in this song. I used your foundation for my own arrangement and I'm loving how it's sounding, so thank you.

As a kid I used to steal my mom's mini cassette player, loaded up with Jim Croce's Photographs & Memories: His Greatest Hits and hide it under my pillow drifting to sleep to this music. Thanks for this, Sean. Would definitely love to see more content like this!

Also Jim Croce was one.of the hardest working. Musicians I ever read about besides the beatles who was just as so dedicated and incredibly hard working musicians.almost 7days 365 days a year and i.mean nonstop for years.

The charm of Jim Croce is the syncopated finger style you mention, but paired with Maury Muehleisen's melodic fills and counter melodies. The thing is they started with JC backing MM. At some point they had a sit down and decided together that they should try MM backing JC. A mature and egoless decision on MM's part that lead to their breakout.

Hey Sean, you really ought to check out Gordon Lightfoot. I first learned that fingerpicking pattern in 1967 off his song called Softly on his album The Way I Feel. It's a common Bossa Nova pattern. Very useful for many songs especially with minor variations. Lightfoot also used it on If You Could Read My Mind. Sadly, he passed a few months ago at age 84. Wikipedia has an excellent article on him.

You should check Gordon Lightfoot out buddy he is from Canada and one of the best singer songwriters ever. Jim Croce life was cut short in a plane crash because of pilot error and Croce put out some of best and some very complex fingerpicking songs he is one ofbest of all time too.

Well Done Gentleman! Well done! Jim Croce’s music is powerful! Time in a bottle, Operator, I’ve got a name…. His music goes straight to the soul!! I also highly recommend his son, A.J. Croce! Of whom I’ve been a huge fan of for almost 30 years.

Great work. Being an older player, Jim Croce has always been an inspiration to me. He and Maury created some fantastic music in just a few short years before they died. I remember reading about his inspiration behind "Operator". It was when he was in the US Army and they had a break to use the payphones and call home. Jim had a long wait to get his chance at the phone and heard a fellow private talking to the operator about trying to connect him with his ex-girlfriend. The song has always been so sad, yet the melody and arrangement are so sweet. It is a true work of art as he conveys a total picture in just a few lyrics.
