So glad that my dad put his greatest hits in my stocking at 10. Never get tired of listening to one of the best storytellers that ever hit the music industry.
I like this version too, it sounds so personal, like it's more for playing to a few close people or yourself rather than in an auditorium for hundreds of strangers.
I grew up listening to Jim Croce, my Dad would put his records on and wander around the house singing the songs at the top of his lungs. Kind of a Photographs and Memories thing. 😊❤
Maury was the music. He MADE the sound. They were an amazing DUO. Love them both. Maury has the sweetest voice I’ve ever heard. It’s amazing hearing him so much here.
I've been learning his fills and his harmony for this song. I'm so glad I found this demo, there is so much more clarity for the details. When I go this deep into an artist's work, its like getting to peek into their mind. It IS a shame that no one really credits Maury so many years later. Had they both not died so soon, after only a few albums, imagine what might have been. They may have become America's Lennon and McCartney.
Can't believe it was 50 years ago that we lost Jim and Maury. The music and their musicianship was incredible. I can still remember so clearly when I heard the news of their passing. I was in study hall in high school when the teacher, who was reading the morning paper, relayed the news of the plane crash the night before. Hearing these demo recordings is a real treat.
I was just a kid when this song came out, and I use to listen to it on the radio and from records. My brother in law use to tell me of all of the singer I needed a lesson about. He is long long gone, 15 years ago he left us. Yes I know that operator was one of the first songs he told me about. Jim Croce had just so much talent.
