A Sombre Day for Veterans Today is a sad day for us veterans, especially those of us disabled through war, peace, and conflict. With Labour's victory in Parliament, the proposed cut to the Veterans Minister post is set to become reality. Our voice, Johnny Mercer - a friend forged through war - has lost his seat. Despite his flaws (arrogance, bull-headedness, and blunt speech), he fought fiercely for veterans. Why do veterans deserve special status? We are the human cost when diplomacy fails. War is hell - dirty, brutal, and indiscriminate. It creates casualties, shattering bodies and minds, tearing families apart. When we return, often broken and disillusioned, society's response can feel hollow - brief moments of honour overshadowed by neglect. Veterans needed a champion to fight for our rights and remind society that while they slept soundly, we stood ready to defend them. Our Veterans Minister prevented us from being forgotten, reminding people of the debt owed to those who've sacrificed so much. The new government's plans to restructure support systems like PIP and the Veterans Office fill me with dread. I fear for the next few years - will we be poorer, less sheltered, viewed as an embarrassing remnant of history? Will we become second-class citizens while others celebrate? The blood on our hands - once a mark of service - now feels like a stain of shame as society's attention wanders. Once a year, people wear a red poppy and pretend to care, but the daily reality for many veterans remains a struggle. To my fellow veterans: I share your fears. To everyone else: Remember, your peace was bought at a price. We're not asking for constant praise, just recognition and the support we've earned. As we face an uncertain future, I hope society will prove my fears unfounded and show that our sacrifices are truly valued.
