i think it's great. many guys would have trashed marilyn publicly. maybe if they hadn't had the wartime separation marilyn would have done better and the marriage survived to old age for them both.

david wells don’t think the marriage would have survived. She agreed to marry him to avoid another foster home. She was physically mature but emotionally stunted. Unfortunately fame & fortune never quenched her emotional needs. She was hard wired to change relationships. May she RIP. My heart breaks at children who are neglected.

Seems like he was a good, kind man. She had all of that fame and money later, but she never found love and security. Here it was back at the beginning. The fame and adulation she wanted, career - whatever it was that drove her to leave him and the life they had - I wonder if it was worth it. Wonder if she would have done the same thing if she'd had it to do over again.

Trivia-Jim was born in San Antonio, Texas. He attended Van Nuys High School, was a football captain and class president, graduated in 1938 alongside Jane Russell. Later, the then, Marilyn Monroe, co-stared with Jane in the Film, "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.' Prior to joining the United States Merchant Marine, in 1943, he worked with Robert Mitchum in a defense plant. He was sent to the South Pacific in 1944. Eventually he went to China. "We decided to get married to prevent her from going back to a foster home," Dougherty later said, "but we were in love." "We loved each other madly," he said. "I felt like the luckiest guy in the world." Norma Jeane Mortenson-Dougherty started to work for Radioplane Company where she was included in a series of morale-boosting photographs, launching her career as a model and actress. She moved out of her mother-in-law's home and stopped writing to Dougherty. "I was on a ship in the Yangtze River getting ready to go into Shanghai when I was served with divorce papers," Dougherty told Associated Press in 2002. She filed for divorce in Las Vegas, Nevada, while he was in Shanghai, China; it was finalized on September 13, 1946. In 'To Norma Jeane With Love', Dougherty stated he was so depressed after his breakup with Monroe that he considered taking his own life, but he could not bear the thought of his mother finding his body. Dougherty said he never saw any of Monroe's movies in the theater because his second wife, whom he divorced in 1972, didn't want Monroe's name mentioned. He said she felt "like she had to compete with Norma Jean, even though she was far ahead because she gave me three beautiful children." During his second marriage, he said, "I destroyed all my letters from Norma Jean -- hundreds of them. I don't need them for a memory, but I probably could have built a house for what they are worth." Dougherty later recalled that a co-worker at the Los Angeles Police Department called him on the phone and said: "Your ex-wife is dead." "It was like someone had kicked me in the stomach," Dougherty told Associated Press in 2002. He spent that day riding around Los Angeles in a squad car to avoid reporters. "I had almost been expecting it," he said of Monroe's death. "Fame was injurious to her. She was too gentle to be an actress. She wasn't tough enough for Hollywood. And once someone starts getting into pills -- uppers and downers, the way she was -- people can go downhill. They can't sleep, so they take more and more pills." - James Dougherty, was the first spouse and last surviving ex-husband. He died at age 84.h

Her first husband was a real man. He didn't try to even say bad things about Marilyn Monroe. Most husband (not all) will try to dog women after they get divorced. He was a gentleman. Hollywood really did a number on Marilyn Monroe. I have a question, did Marilyn always have that sexy voice or was she trained to talk that way which made her a sex symbol. Either way, I still watch her movies. I'm a fan of her💔💔😍😘🥰

Marilyn talked about her marriage with Jim in one of her interviews & she said she was bored most of the time during their marriage maybe because there was no courtship happened. They were both strangers to each other when they got married. If only courtship was given a chance, they will get to know each other more.

I wish they wouldn’t have made her speak like she did in her later films. She sounds and looks so intelligent here.

@Cynthia Edwards: Marilyn created that voice. She felt it was sexier and she wanted to be admired. The clip you mention is from her 1948 film, "Ladies of The Chorus". If you watch the 1950 film, "Clash By Night", Marilyn uses her own voice in this movie and she is amazing in the film. Very appealing and charming with great acting on her part. It seems she started with the "whispery baby voice" in the films that followed these two movies.

+Literature Chick I agree. "Chubby little grandmother!" seemed a bit too far. He kind of seemed to laugh when he said it, so I don't think it was all that serious or mean. That said, Marilyn was and still is an icon. I know she seemed to be portrayed solely as a sex symbol to those who adored her, but I saw more. I also agree with you that she probably would have done something different if she had lived long enough to lose her dazzling beauty. Additionally, and maybe this is because I've recently become a fan of hers, I look at her life, which was filled with emotional scars and losses, and wonder if she was truly happy. She had everything and nothing. She was gorgeous (a lot like my grandmothers- who are both still beautiful), but lacked what she truly wanted, which was a real family, children (apparently had endometriosis, which could have been cared for today), and she also tried to disconnect herself from her acting contract in an attempt to break free of her sexual persona. I will always idolize her no matter what, but I look at her life and wish she had had the chance to find herself outside of the restraints of "the bombshell" or "sex kitten".Jim was wrong by saying that she wouldn't be famous today, because she still is. I sensed so much resentment and disgust in his voice, that you could tell he knew he lost a great woman. I also found it funny that he said his second wife was jealous. three words to describe how she looked to the public: sexy, gorgeous, and confident three words of what was truly beneath all of it: vulnerability, depression, and longing

Jessica R, Jim said he thought she would not be the famous person she is today as, at the time of this interview, had Marilyn been alive, she would have been 66-years-old. She died early and while she was still beautiful, so she retains what she had back in the 50's. She would not have the same following at 66. Interest falls off at a certain point~~~especially in Hollywood, but in the world, too. Sad, but true.
