Again Super Jazz Masters live, someone had up load this before but then erase it Here a text book example of demonstrating meaning a style, comping technique, controlling dynamics
this clip should be put in a 'time capsule'.....can anything be 'perfect'....IMHO.. this is the best it gets.....also when i listen to this ,its so reminds me of BILL EVANS/JIM HALL...'UNDERCURRENT'....
I just finished a improv class with Gary Burton at Berk and he highly recommended to listen to Jim Hall as a reference for guitar comping. I am a pianist so I am here to listen to both Michel and Jim. Without the drums on this particular track. I can listen into both of them well.
Insane playing. Both guys were completely in sync. So there in the flow. I loved how both were more into the tune rather than trying to pose for the crowd. That's why they are maestros; the tune and music mean more than anything. The vamp intro was so cool. That stuff switches me on!
RIP Jim Hall. I was super happy to see your concert in NYC. I remember that I was worried because you showed up on stage in Birdland with a cane and your hands were shaking. However, as soon as you started to play the guitar, your fingers were moving like the master. I just loved your guitar play. And beside your autograph, you wrote me 平和, which means PEACE in Japanese. My life in New York was definitely with your music. You'll be missed. ジム・ホール。あなたの弾く優しいギターの音が大好きでした。もう聞けなくなってしまうと思うと残念でならない。何度かニューヨークでコンサートに行けたときは本当に幸せでした。 今まで本当にありがとう。
Jim Hall, red carpet to surf on modes and rhythmic interpolations. Let Michel go where he wants and still is there for the providential chord. Awesome human being. Cool tribute, thanks.
Subtlety, beauty, swing, demanding players with their own art... What else can we ask for in a world in which sordid and ugly imaginations triumph? The emotions aroused are so pure, so tender! Thank you Jim and Michel for having inhabited the earth. Your contribution to the world was very spiritual. We regret you a great deal.
I think Jim settles on a nice way to do something and puts it in his bag. I’ve heard him “repeat” arrangements or approaches a few times. It’s always such an elegant solution though.
This is just so beautiful - two guys really listening to each other and weaving such magic together - always digging deeper and unearthing exquisite gems - even though there may be guitarists who might have greater technical facility than Jim, there are very few who can come close to him in terms of pure musicality and conception - the world of music has been graced by his contribution - an artist in the truest sense of the word.
Well said. As a guitarist myself, I have no use for the "chops monsters" out there. I detest fast playing for it's own sake. Guys like Jim are far more impressive. I want to listen to something I can sink my mind into.
There's a great interview Jim does in which he talks about this often repeated compliment, "You so tasteful and you're not showing off by playing fast." And he responds, "I was trying to show off by playing as fast as I could!" It's kind of a joke but so many fast players are not listening that well and just playing licks. Picking the right notes is more important than burning a lick that other people have played.
Thanks for sharing this greatness. 2 of my favs and certainly all time legends of Jazz. @EVMC3577 Petrucciani had osteogenesis (brittle bone disease) and was short yes, forced to use a device to reach piano pedals. A concentrated musician, I'd say: large chest to host a big heart, generous head to contain deep knowledge and big hands for great skills. A man born to play.
Two great maestro's communicating in a beautifull way making Art. It's a real pity Petrucciani left us much too soon such a great talent, but he left his Art behind on many video regisrtrations and we're so gratefull for that, Victor.
Meravigliosi...unici...impareggiabile.......tutti e due ora suonano per gli Angeli....beati gli Angeli......Max Wonderful ... unique ... incomparable ....... both now play for the Angels .... blessed the Angels ...... Max
WOW, I can't belive there is video footage of this amazing performance! I have loved this an recordings for 10-12 years or so!! awesome and thanks to the poster! (BTW Jim's first 4 in the trading section is classic! almost of paraphrase from a theme in Careful!)
..and just feeling the music, because they know the knowledge is there, and they dont have to think about it - like becoming fluent in a language. Also, after a while, striving to be 'the best' becomes a really empty pursuit - so instead of striving for 'higher, faster' the focus shifts to 'going deeper' - finding the music that's really in YOU, rather than trying to play what you're 'supposed to play', a la 'correct jazz' and other ridiculous paradigms. When you are hearing the person...
what I like about this type of interpretations is that every note, chord, interplay is deeply thought and meaningful, what makes a masterpiece. YT is full of talented musicians with great technique but often their play sounds a bit vain. Not this case
I think when players are starting out, the focus is on acquiring knowledge; and as a young player, you never think you have enough. There's natural insecurity as you compare yourself to the giants you admire, so it often becomes a case of trying to prove yourself to yourself - players strive to be the fastest, or the most esoteric. With the seasoned masters you can see how it's not about acquiring and displaying knowledge, but rather getting your ego out of the way...
