The traditional, Australian folk ballad from the early 19th century as covered by PI3. This has recently been seen in Tarantino's The Hateful 8 sung by Jennifer Jason Leigh as Daisy Domergue.

I love this version, the vocals have a sort of ethereal feel to them, like it’s actually an old sailor telling this as a tale of caution

"Jim Jones at Botany Bay" complete translation into Russian by PhD Valery Timofeev, 2020:

Convicts were sent to Australia to work as slaves. In Victoria we have miles of dry stone walls built around the paddocks that were compliments of those slaves. The land owner would make request to the Government for convicts to work on their properties. The women, some Transported as young as 15 years of age, were sent out to these land owners as maids etc. America had the coloured slaves. Australia had white slaves. The irish were hated by the English and were treated very harshly though that went for most of the convicts. If I'm wrong someone will correct me. We are proud of our convict heretage.
@jacksoncook343
@jacksoncook343 6 лет назад
This is correct, I just wanted to add that before the American Revolution, England sent Irish convicts to the colonies as indentured servants. Essentially, the Americas also had white slaves as well as black. After American Independence England needed to look elsewhere.
@sflyons
@sflyons 6 лет назад
Technically, they weren't slaves and had legal rights as subjects/citizens, but it was still captive forced labour under horrific conditions. The vast majority were petty thieves, but were given standard sentences of 7 years, 14 years, or life. The fictional Jim Jones getting life for poaching makes sense because it would have involved trespassing and using a firearm (and stealing from someone rich). With good behaviour you could get Ticket of Leave (parole) and work for a private employer for pay. Still under terrible conditions, and they'd often stiff you by paying you with rum. Very few were hardened criminals. Most had turned to occasional stealing due to poverty, so you won't find many Australians who are embarrassed or ashamed about having convict ancestry (It's only about 20% of us anyway).

I've been listening to this song for 20 years...this Art cover of the 1st landing is what blows me away...its hard to find anything on the book where this was copied from... Tench, Watkin. A NARRATIVE OF THE EXPEDITION TO BOTANY BAY. By Captain Watkin Tench. First published in 1789, and now reprinted in type facsimile of the first edition, with additions from the third and other editions of the Same Year. Edition Renard, Melbourne, 2004. Limited Edition; pp. [iv], xii, 164, [2](blank), [2](adv.); endpaper track chart of the First Fleet, coloured frontispiece (portrait of Tench), 3 plates (reproductions of contemporary views & chart), bibliographical and publishing notes; section sewn and cased in full cloth, gilt, top edge dyed and marker ribbon. Melbourne; Edition Renard; 2004. ***Edition limited to 200 numbered copies for sale, of which 120 are bound in full cloth as here. The book is an exact type-facsimile of the rare First Edition, with the original long esses replaced by the modern form to aid readability, but otherwise faithful to the original. Additional material from the second and third editions is added where this differs from the First Edition, and illustrations from contemporary sources illuminate the text and an essay on the publishing history of the work. #41752

During the latter part of the 18th and early part of the 19th centuries, the law in England punished with hanging or transportation anyone who "poached" - that is, took fish or game from another man's land. It was a common offence as workmen were paid such low wages that they and their families were practically starving. As the landlords' estates generally abounded in game it was only natural that a battle of wits, and stronger armaments, developed between the "poacher" trying to feed his family and the gamekeepers hired to protect their lords' estates. If caught and sentenced to transportation to Australian convict settlements the poachers met with hardship and brutality. They worked and sometimes slept in iron chains and were punished for trivial offences by floggings of up to one hundred lashes. From this background comes "poacher" Jim Jones - hardly a convict by modern ideas - defiant, bitter and living for the day when his oppressors may "regret they sent Jim Jones in chains to Botany Bay."
