F Mills I dunno, if you read the bible, you’ll see that God’s been striking us all down since the beginning, right? The Old Testament is just full of stories about an angry God, who just wants to wipe us all out. I’m not sure, but I think it’s Jesus that’s supposed to be asked for help, right? (Sorry, I’m not very versed in the New Testament).

Thank you Doc. While we're on the theme of cult leaders, how about L. Ron Hubbard? How does he compare to the likes of Jones and Koresh? From what I can see there's a cold deliberate Machiavellian quality - I don't for a second believe that he believed a single word of what he propounded. (I even heard a story that he made a wager with friends that he could invent a religion and have people believe it...In order, one supposes, to secretly laugh at human stupidity and gullibility: and the power trip of course). Is there grounds for suspecting a diagnosable disorder in Hubbard, or was he just a subclinical case of narcissism/anti-social qualities?

I was in my twenties then, so I remember this sad story pretty well. The only detail I think you may have missed is that 33 people, maybe more, survived, most by escaping through the jungle. They refused to drink the grape Flavor Aid. Two people who were in the camp during the slaughter survived; one woman hid under her bed and an elderly man slept through the carnage.

TUCK: I don't know. "His mother claimed that she had visions when she was pregnant that indicated Jones would be a great religious leader. She would remind Jones of this remarkable destiny quite regularly. So, what could go wrong with that strategy?" What indeed. As an aside, one person surviving the ambush at the Jonestown airstrip is Jackie Speier, U.S. House Representative for California's 14th District. She went to Jonestown as part of Rep. Leo Ryan's entourage to Guyana, as she was his congressional aide at the time. The U.S. House seat for CA-14 is the seat formerly held by Leo Ryan. To state Rep. Speier 'survived' the Jonestown massacre is an understatement; she had to endure five gunshot wounds for nearly a full day before receiving treatment.

Jacob: Not exactly, it was not a failed coup, and he was planning to commit suicide all along. He did have a little private army, and a general was letting him use military grounds to train on. His plan was to have his followers hold the general hostage just long enough to give the real army troops a lecture about how Japan's army was losing its spiritual values. Then he would commit seppuku in traditional, but by then archaic, methods. After he would slit open his belly, one of his followers would cut his head off. Things mostly went as planned, but the Army members heckled him during his whole speech. And the guy cut his head off was not good at it and slashed his shoulder first. After that, the others in the group let the general go and surrendered to the police in order to go on trial and explain the motives for the crime, all of which had been planned. It is a sad story, Mishima was a genius as a writer and talented in many other areas as well, But he had the ideology of a Fascist, and was also gay. He had a horror of getting old and did not want to live past 40, and that was the age he was when he did his final act.

I just hope whomever is watching this does not try to connect this cult behavior to religion. As they typically say, the proof is in the action. This man obviously had mental health issues, as well as a swollen ego, added to drug and alcohol abuse. Now, no real church will ever have sinless/perfect people in it, but the leadership won’t ever push beliefs that contradict what God has shown us in the Bible. Great analysis as usual! You tastefully brought levity to this tragedy that many people in San Francisco were once or twice removed from. I knew someone who worked with a lady who was a part of this cult. The lady had 2 dresses and ate rice for lunch; everything else went to Jones. Another person I knew answered an ad for a car. The seller was going to Jonestown. This creeped out the person I knew and he passed on the car. Jones had the politicians in SF in the palm of his hand. One word from Jones, the entire congregation voted for the politician. The tape of Jones urging parents to poison their children is terrifying and heartbreaking. Your gallows humor and scientific perspective is on point but still sensitive towards the victims of Jonestown, especially in naming this tragedy as a mass homicide.

The case with the missing boy is odd--Grace Stoen, his mother, was labeled a 'defector'. I think it shows such an example of gaslighting and narcissistic abuse on a grander scale.
