It sounds like a joke but i grew up in a fundamentalist christian circle and knew both young girls and middle-aged women who didn't know the basics of sex (or even their own anatomy). Many of them adopted children to get around having sex because they thought it was 'evil' but then lamented that they 'couldn't have children'... when the issue was simply that they didn't know how it worked. People like that make TERRIBLE parents--they end up being abusive over things like a girl having her period or even having discharge (as though it's her fault and a proof of sin), shaming people for having sex even AFTER marriage... it's terrifying to know that these people live in the 21st century alongside us, but when you see families like that, be kind to those kids--their lives are miserable.

As a former foster parent, I have to add that is sadly common for mothers or parents who lose their child due to their own negligence to then become pregnant again because they still grieve the loss and attempt to fill the void with another child. They often do not see themselves as responsible for their circumstances and have no insight into how the displaced child feels when they simply move on with another child. It's heart-breaking and infuriating.

A couple in my church were going through drug relapse and posted a bulletin asking for a family to watch over their kids while they were in treatment for 3 months. Another family came forward to take care of the children. Upon the parents leaving treatment, the other family refused to give the children back and used the parents drug history against them. The children really struggled with the new family during the 90 days and were heartbroken not being able to be reunited with their parents. 😢 The saddest part about this whole story is how the actions dysfunctional and toxic adults are negative impacting, and hurting, the lives of innocent children. As for the Pences - it's clear there was an agenda in adopting the Codero children. Michelle has issues from childhood, she was 1 of 6 half-siblings taken from an unsafe home and split up when placed in foster care. Also - religious beliefs seem to be a big influence on the Pence family. I think it would be relevant to also examine cases and stories of other strict religious parents who have large families, homeschool children to promote their beliefs, and build their lives around strict religious rules. A news report details Christmas at the Pence home. The news said it used Michelle's blog as a source. There was a game played on Christmas called "Labor and Wages". The point was to teach the children "the wages of sin is death". The children were instructed to disclose their "sin" in detail and then fined $10,000 for their actions. Any child who could not pay would lose their Christmas presents. Christopher Pence played the role of Jesus and paid the debt for each child (and lost all of his presents). This is extreme. It's especially not appropriate for vulnerable children, the Coderos, who experienced recent trauma and loss, and need most safety and nurturing. Also concerning - the bond being formed between parent/child when one parent is comparing himself to Jesus and stating he can pay the debts for the "sin" they committed. How confusing! Imagine how the children feel now that "dad" in jail. By the way - Christopher Pence complete 🐃 💩 If you feel a child is unsafe, call authorities. You don't plot to kill their parents and then ask that a child be used as a witness to give you an alibi. That is NOT WWJD!!!! Michelle Pence is now a single mom to 16 children. How she is going to be able to afford the mortgage and meet the family's various needs on her own, is going to be a challenge. The Codero children are caught between the conflicts of both parents. And likely will be raised in an environment hostile to their birth family. The Pence family is sympathetic to Christopher. I can't wrap my head around a child growing up in an environment where the message is sent that their parents are bad and deserve to be killed. Further - the Codero children will have no exposure or contact to their birth family's culture, history and no contact with extended family members. This is a huge loss. Abruptly, and without warning, the lives of the Codero children changed overnight... they lost everything that was familiar to them and have to acclimate in a completely new environment and meet new expectations. It doesn't sound like the Pence family was sympathetic either. It is understandable that the Codero children would struggle with grief, loss, confusions and emotional/behavioral issues in this situation. The Codero parents, also concerning. They basically gave 5 of their children away to strangers. The husband has been accused of looking at child p-- online and showing it to his children (investigated by DCF but nothing came of it). The family will probably be living in fear for the rest of their lives. It's going to be difficult for the 5 Codero children (if they chose) to maintain contact or a relationship with birth family...clearly therapy is needed.

I don’t understand this, having more than four kids is not that much more than one or two. Unless you’re bathing them in gold, it’s pretty easy to budget. If you can afford one, you can afford more than one.

@@sadiefalco4673 But the OP said four kids and you said one kid. I was responding to the two of you, not a comment about ten kids. The only way two kids would be a *lot* more money, is if you’re both working and need full time daycare, and you want to have all eighteen years worth of expenses plus college tuition in the bank before the child is born. We don’t budget that way, so four kids is not a lot different than one. That may be how your husband is budgeting, though, and that would make sense.

@@sadiefalco4673- Apparently, Kiki isn't thinking about higher education, either. Very few Americans can pay for the college education of 10+ kids. I'm from a family of 6 kids, and my dad had the nerve to say that raising 6 kids isn't that much harder than raising 2 or 3. My mother did almost all of the daily child care, in addition to working a full-time job most years. She also did virtually all of the cooking, the laundry, the grocery shopping, etc. And my siblings and I didn't most of the cleaning and yard work. My older sister and I babysat the younger 4 while our parents were at work. And my dad didn't pay for things like yearbooks, team pictures, haircuts, deodorant, or school clothes if they weren't bought before school started (which was often the case for me because I had football camp before school started and I couldn't make purchases without one of my parents present). We lived in an affluent neighborhood, but my siblings and I were often hungry (especially as preteens and teenagers) because our parents limited our portions so much to save money.

Hi Dr. Grande. Great work as usual. I was wondering if you'd be interested in covering "Bishop" Dwight Reed, who married a 19 year old girl when he was 63. It's a case out of Iowa. It's disturbing to me, but apparently, some people are fine with it.😮

@tbellew100 Honey, because he is old enough to be your brother, NOT your grandfather! The power dynamic in such a relationship lends itself to abuses both financial and emotional as well as measures of coercive control! Plus, TRUST me there's a lot of physical differences between a guy of 30 and one of 63, and those 33 years change a LOT of things, endurance being just one!

@@tbellew100 Agreed but how wise do you REALLY think that a 19 year old is? I have always felt old and although I was a mother of an 18 month old son at age 19 I was the exception not the rule! I would worry terribly for that 19 year old if she was my daughter and wanted to marry a 63 year old who in our case would be older than both her mother and father. I have heard so many domestic violence tragedies that while they can't always be blamed on an age disparity of a generation or more, it does heighten the risk for coercive control and other abuses. My grandson is 19 and I can say with conviction that we don't have enough jn common to have an enduring long term relationship as anything other than grandson and Grandma! While I agree that consent is given by both parties I cannot see it frequently leading to long term happiness either! But lots of money might help the longevity of said relationship!

It taught us kindness, responsibility and cooking, sewing, crochet, knitting, embroidery ect. In the school holidays we helped with the house work and none of us thought this was strange. I went to visit a school friend and I could not stay long because she had to cook for the family as the mum was working. My mum was at home and did this and we had to peel the potatoes ect. I could never say I regret being part of a big fam.

Can't you see that you were fortunate in that your stay-at-home mother did NOT have to make a child-parent of you, but just had you help out as is done in even small families? You say you would never say you regret being one of 10, but it's weird that you don't acknowledge that being one of 10 if your mother had been out working would have been a very different experience, as you saw it was with your friend. You sort of slide over that point. Frankly, unless you were mostly girls who could divide the housework into small shares, I don't see how you only helped with the housework in the holidays! Your mother did everything herself for all of you during the school term?

We had 2 families in our district who decided to compete with one another in which family could have the most children, so in essence it became a Baby Making Competition/Sport. Such people exist. The winner was a Dutch Reformed Family who had 23 children before the mother's baby making skills gave out due to age. The other family (non-religious & backwoods type) unintentionally stopped at 19 children when the father, who was a logger, was accidentally killed when a tree fell on him. In both cases, the older children had the responsibility of raising the youngest members of the family since the mothers were constantly pregnant.

That exact thing is what I am afraid of one of my adopted children thinking. He was adopted from Russia. He's now an adult. When he was younger, we had some contact with his birth mother through letters. He is her first, from what we can tell. She went on to have 4 more. The 1st one was born before our son was out of the orphanage. Why didn't she just go back and get him if she wanted kids? She sent him a nice picture of her and the 4 kids. She asked my husband if we or any of our rich American friends could adopt them. I know how it made us feel. I don't know about our son. I can't imagine, if it has hit him, it's a positive feeling. So, it makes me wonder about thing whole side of things. As a mom of both biological kids and adopted kids, this would tear my heart out.

The fact that the Cordero children weren’t even well-behaved really struck me. It clearly shows that the parents behavior wasn’t at all about actually wanting to raise or care for the kids, rather it’s to satisfy their own weird power trip. They don’t want to keep the kids, but they want anyone else to have a say over them even less. Disgusting
