Political correctness and fear porn is the name of the game these days. It’s truly awful. It’s nice to escape to a better America for an hour through these old great shows
This material is JUST AWFUL. Give me a break with the, "Back When" trope. And, yeah...I'm old enough to have personally experienced this sort of comedy - which was nothing but vaudeville transported to TV - when it was first run fare.
I used to love this show too. I wish it had lasted longer than just two seasons. How Ronnie Schell went down those stairs without breaking his neck is beyond me.
I wish they'll put "The Jim Nabors Hour" on DVD or Blu-ray. Since Ronnie Schell is the only surviving cast member of "Gomer Pyle, USMC" he could promote the show.
Elizabeth MacRae (Lou-Ann Poovie) is still living also. She wasn't an official cast member, but made 15 appearances on the show. It's the role she's best known for.
There’s a lot of Gomer Pyle episodes on Tuesdays here and I’ve been watching a ton of them. Just finished the one where Gomer wakes up in the middle of the night sleepwalking, goes over to Sgt Carters bedside and chews him out.
As a youngster, I never really listened to him sing. I thought his singing was sort of goofy and not a thing taken very seriously by anyone because his character was goofy. In my mind it was like when Alfalfa would sing on the little rascals, a running gag. Years later, just picking up around the house and listening to this video without looking at him I realize - wow - ...his voice is fantastic! I sure was a dumb kid.
Hopefully you'll be able to find part 2. I would love to see some more episodes from "The Jim Nabors Hour". Hopefully you'll post some more episodes someday. I've always loved the late Jim Nabors (6/12/1930--November 30, 2017. Terry Marvin (Dallas, Texas ,USA)
This bunch touches deep into your core , honesty , integrity , raw talent . To bad the greedy folks of hollyweird couldn't see it . I guess a good spell of city life takes it out of you . C.C.P. Virus
I feel that he was actually nervous because the CBS brass wanted him off the show and he knew he was not wanted and was trying to stay on and be likeable and play ball with the executives.
Folks if you wanna see Andy Griffith play an honest to goodness jerk/bad guy. I highly recommend a movie called Lonesome Rhodes. You won't regret it and you may even learn a thing or two about politics.
GET-TV ran the same two episodes over and over for several years but I lost them off my DVR... Other than those, one would have to have some pretty old tapes!
Andy Taylor the Andy Griffith man is now PLAYING A CORUPT POLICE OFFICER WELL ITS JUST A FUNNY SKITCH AND IT IS SOOO FUNNY HALARIOUS IM SORRY 😐😔 BUT SHERIFF ANDY TAYLOR I LOVE TO WATCH IT MAKES ME GIGGLES AND ALL THE TRICKS HE DOES FOR BARNEY FIFE OH WHAT A FUNNY MESS JK I LOVE 💕😘💕😘 ITTTTT
Am I hearing things, or at 13:41 does the sheriff tells the deputy to go to the tailor shop and "find out if my sheet is ready?" A rather interesting allusion to the KKK, one that got a laugh, although not as hearty as the rest of this so-called sketch.
@@brettplum The whole thing is dark as hell, full of jokes about brutality, corruption and murder. The '80s underground comic RAW did a similar take on Mayberry where a Black man passing through town gets lynched.
Wasn't this show in color? I remember watching one episode and it was at my grandparents who had a color TV. The only sketch I remember seeing was Jim having a barbecue and singing "It Never Rains In Southern California" and then they drop snow on the set, the dancers come out and the music changes to "Let It Snow..." I remember another attempt at a Jim Nabors variety show in the mid 70s as a summer replacement. It wasn't very good either, despite Jim's great voice.
@@wildforthecats661 I've seen some tapes (kinescopes?) of old shows like this where the (color) program has been reproduced in B&W but the commercials are still in full color. Kinda baffling!
This is a kinnescope. What they did was aim a black and white film camera at the TV set during the airing. Hopefully, the full color videotape exists somewhere.
I'm laughing my ass off at all the yokels going on about wholesome tv in the good old days... The Mayberry sketch on here is the darkest thing I've ever seen from a network show! In the underground mag RAW, the Friedman brothers did a notorious comic strip about a Black man passing through Mayberry and getting lynched. This sketch is only a little bit shy of that, with Griffith talking about getting his Klan robes from the tailor and grinning his big ol' grin while reveling in stories of brutality and corruption - with the big punch line (in "part 2") being Barney Fife's new role as a kevlar-suited storm trooper! I LOVE IT!
Andy was never funny until he got older. Matlock he was funny on, but on The Andy Griffith Show he was a brilliant straight man to funny Don Knots. Andy's whole demeanor changed as the show progressed.
Not true. Very funny on his comedy records Romeo & Juliet and They Call If Football otherwise he would neved had a career on Broadway or films No Time For Sergeants and The Onionhead. Even the pilot for Andy Griffith Show he was very funny and still had that persona. It wasn't until they cast Don Knotts did he change to the straight man.
Thats because andy said in an interview a long time ago that when don knotts came into the andy griffith show, he knew how funny don knotts was, so instead of him being the funny guy on the show, he let don knotts shine and be the funny guy and do all his comedy routine on the show instead of him, since they knew each other so well in the past, andy was selfless. He looked out for other people, best decision andy ever made, cause we all know how funny don knotts was and he pretty much carried that show, he even helped jim nabors, shine in gomer pyle, RIP to all of them!
This was an epic fail looking back now. Not funny at all. Nabors really did come off as ''how did I get here?'' in this episode. Maybe things improved in later episodes but this is painful to watch. His finest hour was Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. I own all 5 seasons on DVD and have watched every episode many times. The chemistry between he and Sutton was one in a million. My favorite episode is 'Come blow your top' when Carter is challenged by Sgt. Hacker to not lose his temper for 24 hours. Of course Hacker uses Pyle to try and set him off and by the 20th hour Carter has to drive to a remote location, climb a hill and scream his head off just to release some tension.
Yeah, that is one of my favorite episodes also! You can view six episodes of the show in HD every Tuesday early a.m. on the Sundance Channel. Picture quality is amazing, which makes sense as the DVD quality has a high bit rate.
@@jeffzest8393 The quality of the film transfers to DVD for the most part are excellent, especially seasons 3, 4, and 5. Naturally some scenes are grainy but that film is 50 years old. I love the quality of that period of film. It must have been the type of film combined with a certain type of camera that gives it a warm look. Anyway Jeff, thanks for uploading this and never stop watching the 'classic' years of TV.
This was the type of show that was KINGA back in the day, the variety show. Humor was corny as all get out but some worked while others didn't; unfortunately this show falls into the latter due to the writing. These guys were major talents, maybe not A listers like Griffith but good at what they did. Again, the writing was the problem. Variety shows by Carol Burnett, Sonny and Cher, Donnie and Marie, and Bobby Darin to name a few, were shows that WORKED, especially CB show.. The skit with Griffith was not funny at all...bad writing. But again, this format is what "moved" folks back in the day. Heck, the variety show concept goes back to the late 40s, early 50s so the formula, skits and singing with some monologue thrown in, did work, otherwise it would never have lasted as long as it did; the format died out in the 80s. Jim Nabors had a helluva voice...too bad the higher ups insisted he continue his Gomer Pyle image way after GP went off the air.
