I'm almost 60 yrs old, and I have no idea what baseball is without "The Great Jim Palmer"..... he's still sharp as his curve ball. He's a walking Baltimore institution!!! Can't call yourself an Orioles fan if you dislike Jim Palmer.
I agree 100%. Being a good bit older than you and am sorry you never got to see him in his heyday. The 66 WS was unbelievable. And 20 wins year in year out. World series wins in 3 separate decades, Palmer and McNally were studs back in the day. I could go on but again great post
Funny how he was considered “soft” by some, back in the day. Just because he was aware of how easy it was to wreck his arm, especially after that bad injury early in his career. And to think he threw 300 plus innings 8 times in the 1970s!!
Almost daily, I'm glad we have Jim Palmer, so smart and still as sharp as a tack. We believe fully in Jackson Holliday, and thanks to Jim for explaining the situation. GO ORIOLES!!!
i wish more people listened to this ... some guys just need a chance.. and it takes a minute.. these guys are paid good money in the big leagues to throw pitches that young guys cant hit until they learn
Palmer mentions Jim Fuller. I remember him. He had tremendous power & had big numbers in the minors. I remember Phil Rizzuto saying about him "this guy can hit the ball over the moon' during an Oriole game against the Yankees. I always wondered why he didn't last too long in the majors & Palmer kind of explained why.
Fun story about meeting Jim Palmer. My grandmother used to take us whitewater rafting. I THINK it was the Ohiopyle River. So, four girls got stuck on a boulder on top of the falls, and I got out to help them. I was 14. My grandmother held our raft (she was 64), I got three of them in theirs, put one in ours and told them not to leave me. Well, the three girls left me. So, when I jumped, I went into rapids. As I'm drowning, another raft is there. It's two guys, a woman with brown hair who is yelling at her husband to help me (and won't help me) and she grabs my arms. All 6'4 of me. She was tiny. It was Jim Palmer and his wife. Jim had a miserable look on his face. Pissy that she even helped me. I remember a black Nissan Maxima on the side of the river with chrome wheels. I'm guessing that was his. We are from Cumberland, MD and West Virginia. Lot of baseball people. No one was surprised. "Jim was probably afraid to get his hair wet." "Joan has the balls of the two." --- Thanks Jim. Steve Carlton would have pulled me out.
There's a saying we were taught in Little League that applies to even the best MLB prospects. " Baseball is 98% mental". It'll eventually settle down for Holiday, but the pressure has to be insurmountable.
As long as the Orioles continue to win with him in the lineup AND as long as Holliday stays mentally focused and doesn’t get too discouraged, I say keep playing him until he eventually figures it out….which he will. He proved he could hit major league pitching in Spring Training. I know it’s a different animal than the regular season….but I think he needs to figure out what he was doing back in early March and try to replicate now and in the future.
@@Trigger200284 he’s a fucking kid bro 😂. Are you serious??? 😂 It’s amazing in of itself he’s even been called up at 20 years old! He’s already beat the odds.. all his teammates didn’t called up until they were 22, 23 or 24 years old
All you had to do was take one look at Jackson Merrill and you could hear, see and smell READY. Jackson Holliday is now 1 for 28 at the plate. He clearly is STILL not ready.
I remember Jim Fuller well. He came up and a few days later hit two home runs in a fame and we thought WOW! this guy is gonna be great. I never knew till now why he failed to stick. Jim Palmer is a walking baseball encyclopedia.
Primarily its all mental. I dont care how confident you are. Its intimidating at first. Its a process to get gradually comfortable routine becomes your success.
Jackson is 20 years old. He’s going to be a great player, the pressure he feels must be enormous, playing at this level knowing all eye are on him. He’ll be just fine. Give him some time.
Growing up in Towson it seemed every Rodger's Forge LL team's three best players wore #5, #20, or #22. I wore #8 long before Cal Ripken. Loved Andy Etchebarren, plus I caught. LL pitchers tried to imitate Palmer's high leg-kick delivery. Jimmy, its OK to go gray.
Palmer was a workhorse as a major leaguer. He won 20+ games 8 times with 211 complete games. If a starting pitcher today had a 15 season career, he'd be lucky to have 20 complete games. Starters today are nothing but 6 inning specialists at best.
Didn’t know Brett started 5-40, or Willie started 1-21. The team is still winning. So let him ride it out. 🍀🍀🍀🍀 “You just don’t know about this game.” Indeed.
The kid will be just fine, the team is picking him up and we’re in a position where it’s okay if he struggles. It’s only a matter of time until he realizes he’s him
We need to keep this in mind as everyone is clamoring for Mayo and Kjerstad to be up now. We don’t need three rookies working through their big league adjustment periods at the same time. We have the luxury of having one at a time going through it.
yeah, it would probably be a detriment to the team as a whole if all these top prospects came up at the same time when the team is doing as well as it is
Its not worth being worried right now about Holliday. Now, if he is still struggling this much come the start of June, then it starts to become more concerning. But hes not even 10 games into his major league career. And while its not fair to use guys like Cal, Willie May and George Brett to compare Jackson's slow start to, it shows that even all time greay guys take some time to get going. We saw that with Gunnar last year and with Adley in 2022 where he was hitting under .200 for the first 3 weeks to a month of his career.
@@Alan-rw3ez If my son was 1-21 it would be eating me up inside wondering what I could do to help, or where I failed him. Hoping I’m just waaaay too early and everything works out.
Jackson's swing is VERY BIG and VERY LONG. Against the best in the world he may need to cut it down a little. Both Cowser and Westburg are looking great this year. Both have a short swing - no wasted motion. Easier to maintain.
As excited as i am to see this kid swing, I think psychologically this could take a toll on a kid who probably never experienced failure Let him get more ABs at AAA?
Right but what nobody mentions is contact. George Brett was 5-40 but made contact. I’m concerned a guy with such a high hit tool can’t make contact and has over 50% k rate. It’s not like this was a power prospect. His best tool isn’t converting over to bigs
There is a huge difference of pitchers in minor leagues vs major leagues. Holiday will have learn to hit ML pitching. He is only 20, be patient and work on hitting badics
He has settled down in the field, but he is starting to get yippy. He hit a nice pitch on Friday night but right a someone. The strikeout need to decrease.
Holliday is not just struggling at the plate, he’s bobbling routine grounders. Orioles have better players sitting on the bench because of him. He needs more seasoning in the minors and playing everyday
Thank his mother who refused to abort. She left him in a safe place hoping as a new born he would get adopted.I don't think he ever met his mother.Great dude.
Baseball is difficult. Baltimore is contending. You have to think how much patience the front office will have. If Westburg could hit lefties, Holliday would already be in AAA.
Jackson Holliday has a fatal flaw in his hitting mechanics where he is effected by MLB velo because of it. Its not mental, its not confidence, its not anything except this major mechanics flaw where he will have to fall flat on his face for quite a while longer before he changes anything because everybody thinks he just needs more experience. Im not going to say what it is because Im not getting paid for it. It has nothing to do with leg kick like i was reading somebody said.
Lol, the media brags about this guy that he's the greatest thing since sliced bread...just because he's the son of a former player doesn't me he's gonna cut it!!!
This is why you can't bring up all the young guys at once. Can't afford to have 3/4 players hitting like this at the same time, especially when you're competing for a championship
The Orioles rushed him too quickly. Not all high schoolers are going to develop as quickly as Bobby Witt Jr. When the Orioles drafted Manny Machado out of high school in 2010, he didn't get promoted to the major leagues until August 9, 2012. Adley Ruschman played college ball. Jackson just need some time to grow. Manny Machado: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UeNArU_79DM.html
Manny was still 20 when he was promoted.? The call up timing for Holliday was weird. Didn’t break camp with the club but probably earned it. Then they call him up early in the season when they don’t really need him yet…
it’s because he’s a kid. he should be writing book reports and doing his multiplication tables but instead he’s playing professional baseball. of course he’s struggling. give him time
Overhyped player has camera following every move he makes and MLB tweeting 7 times about him on his debut including him turning a routine double play… wonder why he feels pressure to succeed lol
too soon - still growing - not fully developed - won't hurt to wait another year or 2. Don't bring up up for just PR reasons - it could mess him up long term.
I think Jackson will be great! But everyone needs to stop pulling at straws to come up with an excuse on why he’s doing bad! He definitely is moving his head to much and not keeping his eye on the ball period!
Well sure, he has in fact been BAD at the plate so far. I don't think anyone is saying he's just having a run of bad luck. But it is very common for very good players to need an adjustment period. Holliday is dealing with something he has never had to deal with before (at least on a baseball diamond) FAILURE. But he looks to me like he is maintaining his composure and keeping the right attitude.
