I was a teen in this glorious heyday of Chicago radio. Johnny B & Buzz then handoff to Kevin Matthews (sprinkle some Bruce Wolf in there), into Steve Dahl and Garry Meier. We had it good boys. We had it Really good.
I just came across this; used to listen to Volkman's impersonation years ago on Chicago radio. THE BEST DAMN' IMPERSONATION of ANYBODY BY ANYBODY that I've ever heard! Only can listen to a little at a time, since I have to stop and attempt to control the laughter.
Jim Volkman has been doing the best Harry since we were in the 6th grade together. Was great at 11 years old as well. He does a GREAT Jack Brickhouse, Steve Stone, Lou Boudreau and Vince Lloyd. Keep it going Jimmy.
Best Harry impression I've ever seen - and I always loved John Camponera's version, but this is even better. He's got ALL his mannerisms, plus speech style down to a pat. Well done!
Cubs win cubs win, holy cow, i never thought i would live to see the cubs win the world series in 2016, and i was right as i passed away in 1998 ha ha ha. so long everybody
I remember him saying, "That burns my forehead and it frosts my ass!!!" The first time I heard Volkman was the morning (on Jonny B's show) after Harry was inducted into the broadcasters hall of fame and the bit was that they'd been up all night. The impression was so good that I took it hook line and sinker....
You're exactly right, on both counts. Ferrell should be embarrassed. Volkman should be in the Hall of Fame, if only they allowed impressionists into the Ford Frick wing for broadcasters, lol.
I agree that this guy does it better due to being closer in age and looking more like him but I, like many people, thought WF was pretty hilarious doing him.
Of all the Harry Caray impressions I have heard, from Will Ferrell to John Campanero to even Ryan Dempster, NONE of them compares to Jim Volkman. He's got his voice down PERFECTLY!
Holy Cow, what a team Andy Rizzo ,Lane Bryant, Brent Zobrist, Addison Avenue, Georgie Solar, Jon Voight Lester, Aramis Champman, just to name a few says Harry.
Any of Jim's stories from WFRT Fort Wayne were funny. Whenever he had his mom & dad on the show it was absolutely hilarious. whatever happened to Wang & baby Luger?
Volkman's Harry is perfect, and I love it when he refers to Jack Buck, and says, Remember the place by the Gateway Arch, hahahaha... which is probably a reference to the strip clubs just across the river from STL in Southern Illinois. How many times did Harry frequent those lovely establishments back in the day, when with the Cardinals?
And last but not least the skipper super bowl champ and now world series champion. The great manager and coach of course i'm refering to John Maddon. Holy Cow, here's a pitch on the way, wheww he had a rip.
This is the BEST impression of Harry EVER! way better that will ferrel cause this actually sounds like him, i mean ferrels is good but this is amazing!
What's really sad is that young people always "imitate" Harry by trying to replicate Will Ferrell's version of him. And, it's not even close. Jim sounds just like him.
Hello again everybody, it's a beautiful day for baseball, ha ha ha ,you know who aways does a good impersonation of me ha ha ha, former cubs pitcher Dan Ryan Dumpster, Holy cow.
Thank you, thank you, thank you... So tiring hearing Ferrell and Campenera doing their very lame impersonations. Volkman sounds so much like him, the lip-smacking, the slight stutter, the coughing, the rambling... There will never be another Harry, and probably never be a better impersonation.
