Yeah. Trower really had great tone. Used the middle pickup a lot, turned down the controls on his guitar a lot. My favorite tone of his is the opening to Bridge Of Sighs on the Bridge of Sighs album.

Nice work, always great to hear and see someone's take on Jimi's live rig. Something I noticed was that at Woodstock he used a red Fuzzface while in '70, at Maui for example, he used a gray Fuzzface. Subtle differences but apparently Jimi noticed them. Rock on!
Thanks 🙏 The Maui unit probably was based on TFK BC108c silicon transistors, the red Fuzz with the white knobs was said to be Roger Mayers Octavio unit without the octave - (The Axis)? Probably silicon transistors 2N3906 and 2N3904 that sound differently. Fact is that both units worked well along with the Wah going into them so they definitely were no classical Arbiter Fuzzes.

I really enjoyed and appreciated all those Hendrix settings. There's one thing I might add...on voodoo chile I tried for a long time to emulate the two tone note bend early in the track...first i tried bridge/ neck bridge/ neck etc..didn't sound right! Then tried the wah method...close but not really there! after some research i found that the tone cap(middle pickup) in the early strat's was a 0.1 microfarad compared to a lesser value in the modern strats. So I modded my strat with the 0.1 then tried the note bend with the (middle pickup) tone on zero and switching between the bridge and bridge/middle selector and it sounded clear as day! I just ordered a ceriatone jtm45/100 ..so I'll be looking forward to tryin out them thar settings I reckon.Good job on them Hendrix tones Mikel ....very inspiring!
The Echoplex preamp might have played a role in the early recordings, Red House for example. But he never used an EP live! The Uni-Vibe preamp became a thing in 1968 ✌️☮️✌️
Good job Mikel! If I may suggest blending some of that great direct tone you have with some room sound for realism. Eddie Kramer always put Jimi's guitar in a killer room and that's a big part of the tone.

You are a jewel of a researcher Mikel - as a rabid Jimi aficionado I'm fascinated by your findings and replications, and super appreciate them. I do agree that added ambience could be a dramatic transformer that could really complete your recorded sound - I hear all manner of it in the Woodstock and BOG Fillmore Jimi recordings, and Eddie Kramer (engineer for Jimi) has explained on video how bringing up the Fillmore room/audience mics in the mix was what really made the BOG Machine Gun etc. guitar sounds come alive. Indeed I've heard a video version of Machine Gun without that ambience and it was so underwhelming and just not feeling right compared to the album mix that I had to stop watching lol. @@MikelBluni

I also love the "wait till tomorrow" tone its just a perfect clean start tone. btw whats you opinion on the voodoo child slight return tone, its a confusing one for me because it sounds really clean and fuzzy at the same time. anyways sorry for the rambling im the biggest hendrix fan and its because him i started playing and fell in love with music at 15 and been going at it for 2 years and i plan to do it for the rest of my life. keep up the vids!!
Thanks a lot, you did very well. This UV pre amp seems to play an important role, and is very different from what we always hear - that the PU´s have to ´see´ the fuzz face, but maybe it does not work so well with a Germanium FF ?
Thanks for your positive comment. I personally have not experienced any problems with a Germanium Fuzz upfront the UV. The overall sound is a bit warmer/thicker then. I hope I get what you meant ✌️🎸
Thanks man 👍 Regarding your question: At these amp setting the amp itself is on the bright side. The UV preamp compensates for this and thickens the tone. The „real“ brightness factor is the Axis Fuzz! Without the UV after it it can get pretty harsh.

Yep, more compressed maybe, les “harsh”, but it’s very hard to “equalize”the sound because the sound quality of the concert’s records… for me, I feel your sound a little bit modern, as srv maybe… What cabinet are you using? What speaker?
@@crflores76 Thanks for you observations. Indeed it’s a tough task to eq along a recording. I personally assume that the sound must have been brighter and less mellow than on the recordings. Compression and loss of highs/treble could have given us a slightly wrong impression of the actual sound. But…who knows 😀 I’m using g12h-30 Anniversary speakers.

Thanks a lot. I think Jimi sounded great throughout his entire career. He went with time and was very progressive. I think he had to compromise here and there due to road reliability of the gear at that time. I’m sure he had loved to have a multi amp setup with Marshalls and Fenders, but his style, attitude and stage volume kept him to the big amps. His attempts with Sunn and Fender proved it didn’t work out.
That makes a lot of sense what you're saying. I recently went thru his entire output and found a whole new appreciation for his music. I don't think he was burnt out. Had he lived I think he would have done great music. Thanks Mike. Rock on! @@MikelBluni
Two things wrong ....Your guitar is not an upside down. which means the magnets on yur pickups are not reversed and yur bridge is not slanted backwards and your body is not upside down .big difference in distributing sound .Jimis guitar being up side down had more of a mid range total sound . the control cavitity under the bass side helps with tone also of the wood ..big horn helped the treble string have more thickness.. you need to try your approach with an up side down guitar . secondly your plexi is not moded like Jimis . Tony and kenny frank . I knew them and in 1966-7 they moded my amps in this fashion. they tried to by back my first super bass for Hendrix as he was looking for the 600 volt plate voltage . the amp are gone now . but what i can tell you is my amps were romping on three almost full volume as i turned them up the bass came in but the gain was already achieved .I dont know what he did but i know it was something to do with the value of the cap on the volume control . The franks are gone now but if you really want to know the secret go in this direction...I was there ...i touched Hendrix's Amps and pedals from woodstock when they came into to westbury from the show all full of mud ....

I’ve played an upside down Hendrix Strat a couple of times, but would have to do it again to compare directly with my current guitar. Regarding the amp mods - what about the tube change to 6550s? Has this been done to all amps? Further, do you believe that Paul Reed Smith has had the chance to implement the mods to his HDRX amp series? I’ve shown the closest I could get with the stuff I have available, which is due to my musical hearing pretty close. I’d like to motivate people not to give in on finding an acceptable and suitable Jimi tone if that is what they love, knowing that despite all mods and era correct gear no one will ever sound like the man himself 👍🎸✌️
@@MikelBluni the el34s got changed out right away . they were unreliable . 6550's were installed . bias changed . dont think PRS has the mod . im tellin yu . it must be the by pass cap on the vol i didnt know then what i know now about amps . the volume would come almost up to full at 3 . Kenny Frank did the mod and said ive got ti do what i do to Jimis amps because my amp amp was a good one . so he changed very little . but what a huge difference . he said it had to do with the strat pickups being so weak . Hendrix would set them far away from the strings . and what he did made up for it. The Californis guys said that they had alot to do with Hendrix mods but i think not Marshall was on the East coast in Westbury . see if yu can find out anything from kenny or tonys family

But i was a hot shot guitar player of 15 and figured the Album out and kinda figured there was a bassplayer but had to have been two guitars ... not lol i was playn the album material before it was even hit state side . Felix Cavaleri of the young rascals eye balled me one night and was wondering what was this Foxey lady thing ...so i gigged in the Hamptons on stage every night with Leslie west of the vagrants thats when i got my 66 plexi .but hadnt discovered the strat until soon there after . i now play a 1969 lefty always as a main and never went back to the 345 ...youre great man keep up the quest...

You really have decoded quite a lot about Jimi’s tones! Have you looked at the impact of the capacitance of the cables he use? I asked because the tones are so close, but I do think Jimi was slightly more rolled off on the high-end. your amp, pedal and guitar settings seem spot on!
Thanks man ✌️The thing I have done immediately after getting the audience’s feedbacks was to switch the speaker. Haven’t thought about capacitance in the cable which due to my understanding was pretty low around 2nF and took away a good amount of the high end. 🎸☮️🔥
@@MikelBluni there is an interesting quote from Bill Lawrence: High-capacitance cables shift the resonance towards the lower frequencies which dramatically alters tone. For example, Jimi Hendrix used a coiled cord with 3,000 picofarads (.003 microfarads), shifting the resonance below 2,000 Hertz on his Strats. This was the secret of Jimi's tone. Shifting the resonance frequency at 2,000 Hertz has a similar effect to a midrange boost. However, when he recorded and needed a typical Strat sound for some tracks, Jimi switched to a short, low-capacitance cable.
If there's anyone who can get their hands on such a cable I bet it is you. I've personally had a hard time finding one, since all modern cables boast low capacitance, so I'm running like 60 ft of cable to get more capacitance and it seems pretty dumb. @@MikelBluni

6:56 if you look at this shot you can see the settings right as he is playing the solo. if we presume the first tone control is set at 10 (which would make sense because it is for the neck pickup, the darkest sounding pickup) then the vol would be at about 8 and the other tone control at about 9.
Thanks 🙏 Mic positioning is hard to detect. The mic itself was a Shure Unisphere 565 which they took for vocals and instruments. It’s successor was the SM58. So I tried the SM58 and SM57 and the 57 got me a bit closer to the “sizzle”. Jimi’s cab was loaded with Celestions g12h-30 55khz. Newer breeds of this speaker sound pretty trebly and along with the already bright sounding Axis Fuzz I went with the g12h-30 Anniversary (75khz). It brought me closer to the beautiful bass and midrange and the higher register was very close to the Maui and Woodstock eq 👍🎸✌️

@@lordgraga Buying old speakers is always risky due to my experience. Further, I’m really happy with the newer g12h-30s. I’ve used them for about 100 Hendrix gigs now and they totally convinced me. Might try some British g12Cs in the near future 👍
Thanks! I’m totally with you, Woodstock was entirely different. But although it was a little chaotic it’s such a characterful and intense gig to experience and watch. Larry Lee’s guitar playing was pretty decent - unfortunately he got lost in the mix a little bit.
@@MikelBluni He got lost a lot. 😆 His Mastermind song has a cool rhythm part. I think he was just taken out of most of the recording, until things like Jam Back At the House, where he’s actually audible, snd reading playing leads and rhythms with Jimi, to the point one can hear why Jimi had him there. The congas aren’t really in the mix either, snd it just makes me wish that Hendrix had Santana’s sound guy. 😄 Woodstock, even over Band of Gypsys was the live show that really made me fall in love with Uni Vibe, because Jimi was using it on songs, that he didn’t always use it on later. It also has that great Voodoo Chile, with the early Stepping Stone in the middle. I remember learning as much of the improvisation, as I could at 16 or 17 years old, and finally getting access to try some vintage Uni Vibes. This was 1994, so it wasn’t easy to find them where I lived. When a local pawn/guitar shop, bought a dozen of them at a show, I was one of the lucky locals, who got to try them out. Half of them were so damaged, they were basically unplayable, or knobs wouldn’t do anything, and/or the preamps were either missing, or just loud and noisy as hell. Three units had that great sound, like I’d been getting into, but still each had big differences. I think one of the good condition one’s, was a 69’, so it was voiced a bit differently. The preamp was the part I had no knowledge of then, snd the way it seemed to help my guitar get a little dirt, while focusing the mids a bit as well. I couldn’t afford one, as I had only recently gotten any pedals, besides the wah I had from the beginning. The guy who sold me my first guitar and amp, threw his Crybaby in. It’s really a renaissance era for Uni Vibes right now. There are vintage circuits, made as close to the original as possible, to Vibes that can do different things. So many beautiful pedals, being made all over the world.
Klasse Tone, aber ob dieser finally war/ist wissen wir ja alle nicht so genau. Schade das Hendrix so früh verstarb, er hätte uns allen Beigesterten noch sehr viel mehr geben können. Ich kenne Dich aus dem Musiker Board als Guitar Coach, leider gibt es dort auch sehr viele Banausen, und hier in YT und deinem eigenen Kanal kommst Du mMn auch sehr viel besser rüber. Sicher kann man Jimis Sound auch mit anderen Pedalen rüberbringen, denke an das klassische Cry Baby Wah und dem Rotovibe. Auch mir dem MXR Distortion plus kann man wenn man es voll aufreißt einen sehr Fuzz ähnlichen Sound generieren und noch mehr. Ich selbst spiele eine Fender Classic Player Strat, ein Marshall Origin 50 Top über ne 4er Box und habe damit auch eine Art Plexi Sound. Klar kann man streiten ob das an die Marshall Super Leads gegen Ende der 60er ankommt, ich denke ja, vieles hängt von der Spielweise ab. Das Du Hendrix Like spielen kannst und alles dazu aufgesogen hast merkt man, mir gefällt auch Deine Art wie Du es so rüberzubringen. Kleiner Kritik Punkt, ich hätte mir bei Lover Man Deine Gibson Flying V als Sound Beispiel gewünscht, diese spielte Jimi am Ende ja öfters. Gruß

Ah diving down the rabbithole :) let me just ramble a bit... I would like to see your take on Woodstock tone, to me this sounds a little less middy, more bass and treble as opposed to woodstock sound. His guitar always sounds focused, light and slightly hollow, maybe thicker in upper mids... I'm guessing you know what I mean. I wonder how much this has to do with the recording method as well, I read that it was Eddie Kramer facilitating the recording. Also I read that Woodstock was done with greenbacks as opposed to the G12H30 /55 Hz you usually read about. Your wah voodoo intro sounds spot on with Maui? nice What's your recording chain? Plexi into the Harley Benton PA-100 into 2061cx cab into SM57 or something like that? Or is this some IR speaker sim? I actually used to have the whole 2061 setup, ditched the 2061 cab in favor of greenback cab for more modern stuff, but I'm getting more into the Jimi tones again after some time. Still have the 2061 head (ceriatone), there is a pretty sweet Jimi like clean tone I came up with using the 2061 into a reactive load and some power amp sim slapped on top of that. It has that acoustic pop, but you gotta pluck really light for that to happen. I will make a video. As far as plexi, there is an interesting read on metropulous forum titled "Jimi Hendrix' Gear and Mods at West Coast Organ and Amp". You should check it out! I got turned to this by Nik from Ceriatone, who was doing a supposed BOG era circuit plexi for some guy. There is also the Woodstock circuit which is different from stock as well. PRS has that Woodstock amp copy but I've yet to hear anyone do ANY convincing Jimi sounds with it... it's pretty weird. Myself I'm really leaning into getting the Grammatico Kingsville 59, I'm sure you saw millstap's videos. I mean woodstock sound would be a dream, but I can't help but like the bassman growl more... Just gotta figure out how to get the thing to Europe lol.
Hey, your rambling is very welcome. Actually, I’m a huge fan of Jimi’s Maui tone. As mentioned in the video Woodstock was my actual video reference, tonewise I chose to go for slightly more fuzz. I used the Two Notes Captor and a Greenback based IR. My cab with G12h30s was still at a gig location but I’m planning on using it for upcoming videos again. In the room the sound was overall a tiny bit warmer than in the video. Further, I stayed with the setting that I have found. It was my aim to see and present what this setting could have sounded like and now we know it was kinda trebly but still awesome 😊 BOG seemed to me like a 45/100 which tends to be warmer sounding. I have a BOG video on my channel with a Fuzz by Deep Trip. Had to bridge the channels to come close to that warm and thick tone.

It’s really not worth paying for a specific amp, just to get Hendrix tones. I don’t know what demos of the PRS Hendrix amp, that you’ve been watching, but it’s really not difficult to get Jimi sounds from one. Yet, I’d tell anyone to just get a more affordable Marshall, because most amps can be dialed in, once one is using a Wah, Fuzz Face, Octavia and Uni Vibe. I used a Solid State Fender, for years, and people though I sounded just like Jimi, when playing Hey Joe, Wind cries Mary, Voodoo Chile, and other songs from the greatest hits, that most had heard. When I got into the Band of Gypsys, and post 68 music, things like the Hey Bany intro, into Villanova Junction, would have people mesmerized. Then I’d tell them it’s Hendrix, and they’d say “never heard that before,” to which I’d guide them to the music he was making after Ladyland, and how he had nearly as many songs after, as he recorded on the first three albums.
@@MikelBluni I love my Deep Trip BOG. It can do so many types of Fuzz and Drive tones, I don’t even use it as my cranked Volume and Fuzz, Fuzz Face. I use it as a secondary one, like a separate amp channel, to get the in between clean and full guitar volume knob fuzz songs. Or to get a bit more going into an Octavia.

Logically for an Origin the Tilt would have to be dialed all the way to the right to recreate the High Treble input Jimi used - provided that the amp is naturally overdriving, giving you warm overdrive and slight compression and you further push it with a Fuzz. As you might not use a UniVibe’s preamp you could reduce Treble and Presence by 3 numbers. Try first with the settings shown in my video - good luck 👍🎸🔥
@@johnsmith-zf1fd I had a Deja, if I remember correctly it’s more on the warmer side of sound, especially in the vintage setting. Bear in mind that when Jimi started using the UV he was in the Silicon camp mostly. So yeah, try an Si-Fuzz, but don’t all in all exclude your Ge-Fuzz. Just experiment a lot in the end you must like and feel the sound, the rest comes with the playing 👍🟥

Sounds awesome, great video. I know that Jimi used the red fuzz face w/ the white knobs at least from I'd say May or June 1969 until probably just after the Berkeley shows in late May 1970, after that you see (and hear) that light blue fuzz face which sounds way more fuzzy than the red w/ white knobs, almost as if it had germanium transistors but everywhere I look it comes up as silicon. From what info is out there, the red fuzz was Roger Mayer's Octavia circuit minus the octave up wiring, so just the fuzz part. It has a much smoother distortion than the blue fuzz tone of the latter part of 1970 tone. The fuzz you are using seems to come very close to the post Berkeley 70 tone. What is the Axis knob settings you are using?

Jimi used Silicon since Axis, because Mayer was modding those Germanium ones, before Dallas Arbiter even started making them. Hendrix used many different modded Fuzzes, in studio and live. From 67-70 it was silicon.
germaniums are easier to design an octave-up around, but by the time of the fuzz-face, the trend was to use silicon for reliability, consistency & stability.
MIKEL BLUNI, are you using the Univibe preamp as the first pedal in the order BEFORE the fuzz face/Axis Fuzz and then the wah pedal is last in the chain order?

@@MikelBluni Hendrix Live Rainbow Bridge you can see hendrix used coil cables which are 20 feet or 30 feet wrapped around all the pedals it looks like a rat nest. The Coil patch cables are very long and goes underneath the fuzz face pedal. I'm not sure why hendrix used extra long coil cables for each guitar pedal. Look at the Rainbow Bridge pictures of his pedal board and coil cables it looks like a rat nest which he did this for a certain reason which I'm not sure why because the signal to noise ratio is an F-Minus if you're wanting good S/N signal to noise ratio.

@@waynegram8907I think Jimi used coiled cables because they contribute to treble loss, so he was using them in a sense as EQ to tame some element of the top end. This makes sense if he was using only the treble input on the Marshall as suggested, which is painfully bright. As for signal to noise ratio, I don’t think he was really concerned about that, the way everyone is nowadays. If you listen to his live stuff, when there is a pause in playing, there is a tremendous noise floor. But when he was playing, it was so loud that you can’t hear the noise. That was just a thing everyone put up with back then. It was just accepted that live performances were raw and noisey, not like today where everyone expects live sound to be as quiet and produced as on a studio recording.
@@darwinsaye yes true but if you watch rainbow bridge the coil cables are the 50 ft coil cables being used as patch cables which is very unusual to use such a very long coil cable as patch cables for each pedal. Rolling off the top end but also its adding capacitance LOADing on the outputs of these guitar pedals which I think causes oscillations and unstable outputs which he much of be going after.
Respectfully every single vintage authentic plexi sounded different. Did you not dial an amp in by the numbers you got an amp in by the Sonic Dynamics! I have only three flex season in my life and everyone was different.
do you use celestion g12m greenbacks or g12h 30watt 75hz or speakers i know that jimi uses the g12h 30 watt 55hz but i personally prefer g12h 30 watt 75hz for extra sizzle
Joe Gagan does build excellent sounding wahs, I'll give him that, but the so called Woodstock wah in real life was a Clyde McCoy picture wah, Photo's are kinda hard to find but with both photos & video its more than clear to see exactly what wah Hendrix used that day, Its wasn't a TDK inductor wah as i said, it was a Clyde McCoy picture wah with distinctive paint chips/markings, I actually feel sorry for the guy that bought the so called Woodstock wah he paid tens of thousands for a wah that never was.
Thanks for your feedback. Sounds interesting, but we’ll never know for sure, because nobody turned that Jimi Wah around to check if it was a picture Wah. I work by ear and my Gagan Wah is spot on with or without picture.
@@MikelBluni It was the solid black shell Pre Vox front face. The what i call fake Woodstock wah still had the badge on the face of it, But like you said one can go back and forth on it, I suggest you look deeper into it, you'll see for yourself, I spent a good amount of time on this subject.
