@@BigBoiNick The Crayon is EHX's take on the BB preamp circuit- the potent eq makes it very versatile and it offers more gain than the original BB circuit so it's good for more than blues and classic rock- you can push it into some heavy territory with a good amp. EHX is awesome- I just wish they would upgrade their footswitch. They're very clunky and several of my EHX pedals have an issue where they make this "pop" sound when engaged- sounds like a shotgun blast if you're running through a stack or a good PA system or something. They sound great once on, but I can't engage them mid song because I have to mute my amp to cut them on- otherwise I could damage my speakers.

Self taught on budget gear, Dave is the real deal, reminiscent of Clapton and those 60s guys who managed to get a great sound out of largely troublesome gear and with minimal effects, you know, the days no Gibson SG would stay in tune for one song and they cut speaker cones in amps to get a ragged tone. He is that kind of guy who can find GOLD out of a dog's dinner.

Great to see the Andertons team working with youtubers like Dave. He's got a great attitude towards affordable gear, and he can play like an absolute demon. I'm sure when he records his 'intros', he's tuned into somewhere else. I've seen him play Medieval sounding Folk stuff, to Arabic sounding ScreamCore., ..... On a "Shaffordable" plank and some little tin boxes. And on top of all that, .,...... He is one of the nicest people to ever be seen on the Internet.

Excellent as always with Dave and I love this series because the reality is... we don't all have £5000 for a set up and you wouldn't use a high end guitar live anyway (damage, theft), a decent amp yes, but the guitar is generally a well set up mid-range £800 or so in my experience, one you can afford to get knocks and dings. My son uses a Mex maple neck HSS Strat with a Laney LC30 - 112 (v2), 2008 vintage - the amp out of the box is Class A, with 8 high quality valves and a 'real' accutronics spring reverb tank, can provide Fender 60's style on the clean, a more Marshall tone on the drive channel. And fits easily in a boot (Eric). A Jimi Hendrix anecdote for you, from the autobiography of the late, great Bobby Womack. They were both touring on the same bus when Jimi was a side man in Isley Brothers - Bobby was Sam Cooke's lead guitarist and at the time at least, his senior in capability. Both unorthodox and left handed which gave them a playing edge they shared and would discuss together on the long nights between towns. One difference between them is that Bobby didn't mod his guitar which was a stock right hand, upside down without a string change so the bass wound was at the bottom (and no neck change). As stated here, Jimi liked to mod his guitar which made it unplayable for Bob (or anyone else). However, one night he lost his pride and joy following a card session in which a fellow band mate accused Jimi of stealing his cash - Jimi wasn't averse to lifting things on their travels although Bobby thought this was unlikely between the crew. Jimi went to sleep and when he woke up his guitar was gone - the offended guy had thrown it out of the bus door and that guitar was never seen again.
@Jeymez
@Jeymez 2 года назад
well the funny thing is, the way Jimi got his iconic sound can't quite be replicated regardless of how much you spend. you can get pretty close, there's some tribute bands out there have done some of his songs, but they still sound slightly different. it's copyrighted after all, once an artist or band has established there sound they take whatever they used off the market. the closet modern artist i can think that some people compare to Jimi is Lenny Kravist, but i disagree with that.

Now there's something here at 9:02 where Dave talks about Roger Mayer designing "more of a fuzz overdrive". I've been waiting to hear this for years. To me, the greatest Hendrix guitar sounds by far are on Band of Gypsies; Live at Fillmore East. I agree with Dave. The earlier sounds were perhaps great as a one off say as on Purple Haze. But that's not a sound you'd use on every solo on every song on all night. Where as, the BoG album sounds more like the amps are driven reasonably hard with whatever pedals Hendrix was using, just pushing things over the edge. I have watched tons of fuzz demos on YT. NOBODY, that I've yet to see, goes anywhere NEAR addressing this whole lower gain side of fuzz boxes!. In fact you'd be flat-out finding 10% of these demoers that even ever try winding the gain back LOWER than 12 o'clock!. And unfortunately, even though Dave addresses this at this point in this YT clip, that's the end of it. The rest of the demo then only explores that massive over the top style of fuzz. Exactly the fuzz so many people think fuzz HAS to be!. They seem to think they have to go more when it's clearly about going less! Possibly driving your amp nearer break-up and using a touch of whatever pedal to push it over the edge. Less CAN be more!! The wholly grail is whatever Hendrix did to get how he sounded on the afore mentioned album. Surely to god it's out there some where!!??

The only choice I’d disagree with was the octave fuzz. The octave was too high in the registry. I think the other finalist was a better choice. Beyond that small detail it was awesome. Especially when Dave busted out Foxy Lady, I’d never seen anyone pull that intro off so perfectly like that. It’s as if that fuzz pedal was built for that one bit. Great job Dave and Lee!
@bangamullet
@bangamullet 2 года назад
The entire point of an octave fuzz is that it produces a note exactly an octave higher of the note you’re playing. It can’t be too high in the registry because if it was a higher pitch than that it would create dissonance. Maybe you thought there was too much off the effect and not enough dry signal. I disagreed with the Vibrato section. Jim I used a Uni-vibe, not a Vibrato pedal. Two separate effects. He should have pulled an MXR Uni-vibe.
