Jimi Hendrix was once asked “How does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world?” his alleged answer was “I don't know, go ask Rory Gallagher.”
So was he right?
I thought It would interesting look at some of his songs and learn how to play them. Then decide.
This first song we will look at the track Moonchild.
Tablature and backing track are available here premium.skypeguitarlessonsonl...
Please let me know your thoughts on this subject in the comments.
What is your favorite Rory Gallagher song?

Everybody has their own opinions of who was or is the best guitarist on the planet. In my life I have seen many very good guitarists but in all honesty nobody came anywhere near Rory. For me it wasn’t just how he played but he had something that I never felt with any other musician/performer and that was how he conveyed his character his generosity and warmth through his music. I had the the extreme luck to have seen the great man 6 times and I think anybody else who saw him would agree that he was just phenomenal.

I saw them all except Hendrix and you are correct no one comes close to Rory and you're right its not just the licks, the songs ,the skills there is a magnetic aura that is unique to him. The last time I saw him at the Guthrie in Minneapolis i came away with an strange and unshakable feeling that maybe he wasn't actually from this world as most of us know it. like some sort of transcendental angel (for lack of better vocabulary) or something of that nature. It was very palpable magic he just passed his hand over the strings and all this incredible stuff came out it didn't even seem like was doing anything.

I saw Rory play a few times in the early 80's and 90's. The first time in a small club in Cookstown, N Ireland called Clubland, then the Ulster Hall a couple of times and Dublin. Every single time, and I mean Every.... Single.... Time... it was a mind blowing experience. In fact in all my years of going to concerts only two other guitarists even came close to putting on the same level of magic at a gig. One was Walter Trout and the other Joe Bonamassa, funnily enough both the gigs were in small clubs like my first time with Rory but that passion, honesty, rawness of feel and genuine god given talent is a once in a lifetime event. We'll not see his like again.

I was 7:41 fortunate enough to see Rory a handful of times in the Chicago area back in the seventies. He always put on a fantastic show. He is my favorite guitarist. So much so that I convinced our daughter and son-in-law to name our first grandson Rory. I also like the fact that he never sold out and released a single. He always said that music should be listened to as the entire album. I imagine that he would have been bigger if he had release singles but that didn’t interest him. For Rory, it was all about the music

When Hendrix answered, Rory Gallagher, he was in England for the Isle of Wight festival, which Rory was at, fronting Taste. Hendrix was asked on an American chat show, may've been Dick Cavett, could've been "Johnny", on that occasion, very embarrassed he answered 'how about the best in this chair', that was after Woodstock!

Some of us were fortunate enough to discover Rory literally over 50 years ago. To a select few millions of blues rock cognoscenti he was our rock guitar hero - almost demigod were it not for his equally well known down to earth humility. He was the most dynamic live rock performer - blazing guitar style and generously connecting to his audience like possibly no other. Jimi was right

@@GuitarMates “It’s what I do.” I.e., being right 😂 Makes it hard to be very ‘umble - unlike Rory’s reputation - as renowned for being the people’s guitarist (modest to. fault) as well as the guitarists’ guitarist. E.g., Jimi Hendrix, Brian May - huge fan* in fact Rory taught him his first licks after a gig once - and Slash who discovered Rory further into his (Slash’s) career. There’s a RU-vid dudes Forgotten Guitarist channel. When he covered Rory Gallagher he told how first time he heard Rory, he was driving listening to the radio. After they played Cradle Rock, the host, Jesse Mulligan said, “Well, that’s got the whole studio crew rocking alright!” I got the opportunity during my 15 minutes of fame (or truly reflected glory) to give a pretty well rounded bio of the man as individual and artist. @@GuitarMates I think we sometimes drown in an overload of possibilities and forget to get the best out of the things we have. Playing a one pickup guitar directly into a 2 knob valve amp improved my technique more than getting more pedals. Instead of tapdancing between sound gadgets and settings, sound nuance had to come from playing. Changing the place where you pick a string (at the neck, at the bridge, in between) the angle of your pick or nails towards the string, how hard you pick, up or down, etc. It often has more tone change than switching between pickups.

Rory to me is one of the truely unique blues and rock guitar players. He just presented who he was to the audience and played like the person he was. I often say he is sort of the European Stevie Ray Vaughn, Both visceral and raw players but other than that they appoached blues differently and in their own ways. SRV to me has a lot more of a meat and potatoes early electric blues and rock twist to him very reminsent of his older brother jimmy vaughn but on hyperspeed, Rory to me had more of a irish folk, bluegrass and early rock and roll tint to his playing. As a guitarist you listen to any song from Rory's catalog you always catch something unique and raises an eyebrow that you want to learn and breakdown.

But what is known is that Jimi was always humble, and always dodged or played down that question. I have heard this quote 100 times and each time it's a different name. After all, Eric Clapton and Hendrix were both bluesmen but still released music that was considered 'pop' in those days. I don't like discussions around "The greatest Guitar Player" because there is no way to measure. If we talk about 110Meter run, at the end one will be the fastest, simple. But what is the benchmark for the best guitar player? Speed? Phrasing? Technique? For me there's one benchmark and that is "sounds good, performs well" and please without too much manilpulation like Autotune and others. When it comes to Rory, he is definitively one of my guitar heros. But it has to be live, then you will rarely find a guy with so much energy, zero rockstar attitude only honest great bluesrock. That is why I said allegedly, It might be an urban myth but it's roots are in the right place.
@KingKull1971

@GuitarMates it couldn't even be alleged with any legitimacy. Jimi performed the Isles of Wight concert 19 days before his death. Jimi would have run into Rory and his band Taste around that time. And there's no way possible that Jimi would have been able to make an appearance on the Mike Douglas show at that time. It's a myth and should be disregarded as such.

Hi Micheal I just go with the folklore. As I said the superposed response was "Ask Rory Gallagher" of course no confirmation can be found.

You obviously didn't mean the apocryphal Hendrix quote was in the 70's because Hendrix died in 1970.

Hi Hugh, fact or fiction, who knows. If you noticed I said allegedly. Most people refer to a TV interview that was recorded but the comment was supposed to have been made to a newspaper journalist. What ever the truth it doesn't change the fact Rory was an incredible guitar player.

@@GuitarMates It annoys me, and presumably lots of other Gallagher fans, that this myth keeps being trotted out. Not a shred of evidence that it was ever said. It's a complete fabrication. They're both great guitarists. Not sure you can compare them at all. They're quite different.

@@GuitarMates I did notice the "alleged". And you'll notice I said "someone", not you specifically. 😀 Still, the constant repitition of the falsehood leads to lots of folk, especially on Facebook at the moment, claiming it as fact.

@@1humac I thought that myths and stories where a part of 70's rock and roll. No social media in them days just good old gossip. At no time did I ever wish to upset anyone when I made this video. In my defense I never did try to compare them at any point. Two great guitar players in the same generation.

@@1humac This is why I treat Facebook like a comic. Fact and fiction have no meaning on that platform unfortunately. Personally I thought FB was better when it just had pictures of cats! But that's just my opinion. What I have enjoyed since posting this video is reading peoples memories of Rory, that has been so refreshing.

Jimi never said that . Both Jimi and Rory were magic. It’s a shame that fairly recent myth keeps cropping up . I only heard it within the past 20 years. Stick to the music - leave out the fairy tales.

Hi John, do please note that I said "allegedly". However I am not to convinced that it's a recent myth, I recall hearing this comment when I was still young which I am sure you can tell is somewhat more than 20 years ago.
