I agree with you 100%. It seems like people that are as incredible at their craft as Bill Hicks was with comedy only get to be with us for a very, very short time. He was to me what prophets and saints are to Catholics. There will never be another like him, that’s for sure.

Wish Bill was here to feel this. Jimmy does a great job of inspiring scepticism with humor and compassion.

Thank the heavens that the UK embraced Bill Hicks after being ignored in his home country for so many years.

the problem was America had trouble understanding his level. Same as they didn't get a lot of English comedy like Monty Python for many years. It was too intelligent.
@amojak
@amojak 4 года назад
@Johnny Facetious Americans did not get self deprecating humour, or intelligent humour it seems in the 70's. Ego i think was the main issue. Shows like Police Squad were excellent examples, they used very pythonesque humour and it went way over the heads of the execs and a lot of the audience. As The Zucker brothers themselves stated, the aytpical 60s American back then "flicked on the tube" for mindless background drivel, they didn't want to think or have to watch every single moment of the show so they didn't miss one of the many layers of gags that would be referenced over and over again, often from previous episodes.

@Johnny Facetious yep he pointed out hypocrisy, double standards and all the things a lot of us are aware of but without the means to express it.

I'd love to hear more American comics talk about Hicks. Its well known that American audiences were not as receptive as audiences in the UK. But I gotta think there's more comedians like Dore that have a Hicks story they'd like to tell

@TYSONHAWKE Hicks was censored by the mainstream telly companies in Yank-land. Here, in Britain his shows were shown uncut and in prime time slots. Not the fault of the good Yank public that he never broke big in his beloved homeland.

Wow, this interview is fantastic. I love Bill so much. It really is bittersweet listening to him or watching him especially in the today's world where someone like Bill is so needed in our culture right now. There are a few like Colbert and Stewart but they barely even scratch the surface of what Bill represented.

He wasn’t pro-hard drug except fir an occasional mushroom with his buddies out in the country. His routine where a cop gives him a doobie while stuck in traffic “I’m sorry officer, I was taking life seriously.” is so good and also how no one stoned in bars gets in fist fights. Love him

Peter James Cullen absolutely. I identified as a liberal through the 90s and early 2000s. My views really haven’t changed, but “liberal” is now the very last word I’d use to describe myself.

@ozgamer there’s nothing false about it. There is a colossal schism between the left and right here in the states. And that’s thanks to our media and politicians. They have weaponized and inflated friction between us all. This same friction barely came to the surface before 2016. They saw an opportunity with the death of George Floyd, and they went all in. Now, it will either take a miracle or a disaster of epic proportions to avoid a civil war. Personally, I’m a centrist. I believe in God, but I don’t think that people should shove their religion down the throats of others. I think that abortion should be legal, but in most cases, is incredibly immoral. I think the war on drugs is an absolute failure. I own firearms, and believe it is my right. I also believe that it should be a more rigorous process to obtain and maintain ownership of one. I think that there is corruption in both branches of our government. I abhor hate speech, but I believe that it’s a indisputable right to say whatever the hell you want, as long as you don’t willingly incite violence. I completely support all marginalized groups, but I don’t think they should be destroying the well-being and property of the innocent. In a perfect world, there would be no right and left. But, there IS a right and left. It’s human nature. And, I don’t think that this concept is unique to the United States. I never picked a side before, but the left has gone absolutely insane. We aren’t dealing with a simple “dichotomy” here. There is a communist insurgency in progress right now, and to think that it’s merely a difference of opinions between two sides is childish.

I wanted to give this a thumbs down (I gave a thumbs up), because I find it to be obviously foolish that Jimmy Dore isn't a comedic/political genius. I love you Jimmy. In my life I have very few comedians that I hold on high esteem.. In the 80's, I grew up listening to Cheech and Chong tracks that I don't even know how I spirited away with my friends; and, I liken you to an educated Cheech and Chong of the 2020's

You're totally missing the mark. A lot of comedians are funny, but people like George Carlin and Bill Hicks exposed a lot of bullshit pertaining to our culture and bee hive mindsets through their comedy. I'd rather a comedian be philosophical and eye-opening through their comedy than just plain "funny". People like you don't like them because you're one of the pathetic types they're talking about.
