Forget your £5bn TV deals and £100m players living in palaces, THIS is what real football is all about! Goalkeeper playing in the Third Division on loan from another club, scores with the last kick of the game to keep a small (*edit: sp) *provincial team being relegated to oblivion. Jimmy Glass, now a taxi driver and a volunteer goalkeeping coach at Poole Town FC, a true footballing hero.
Probably, in my opinion, the most amazing last second goal in the sport to date! I know people will say "What about Aguero, he won Manchester City the title?" That did win them the title, but this goal meant more. 70 years of play, the team is most likely going to disappear if relegated, and a goalie on LOAN comes up and scores in extra time to save the entire club?!?!?! The most mesmorizing moments I have ever witnessed... Coming from a Southampton fan I salute you Jimmy Glass for truly showing everyone why futbol is the most remarkable sport in the world.
Zoomscoping Chesterfield fan, here. I cannot remember for the life of me who we played that day. I just remember having to leg it from the Rec to get to my 5 a side game, believing Carlisle were relegated. When I got to the 5 a side, people were gathered round a car with the radio and there was an excited buzz. “The keeper scored for Carlisle in the 95th minute!” Me: “...piss off!” But they weren’t pulling my chain - Jimmy Glass just saved Carlisle’s bacon and we were all made up for him. We might have all supported different teams but we were all Jimmy Glass that day!
@Zoomscoping, yes I agree with you that the Carlisle goal was more important. Aguero's goal would never have happened but for Paul Dikov's goal at Wembley in the play off final a few weeks after Jimmy Glass saved Carlisle. If we had failed to get out of div2 in '99, there would have been no takeover, no Aguero, no Silva21, no Yaya, no Pep, no KDB, no 100 points. We'd be in the Eccles and district Sunday afternoon pub league now.
this breaks my heart, i was celebrating on the pitch at McCain stadium because we thought we were saved, wounded, Scarborough were never the same again
This was REAL football... NO multi-million pound signings, NO outrageously over-paid intenational divas... A Carlisle crowd passionately supporting their local team, along with away fans who have travelled practically the length of England from Plymouth to Carlisle to support their own local team. Their reward? To see a moment of footballing history that will never be repeated. The premier league could only dream of seeing such a dramatic moment!
They can't afford to travel to every game, every match they play is practically a long round trip. Plus it will be safer not to go to the Dingles ground, bellend road.
@@leonwrexham4800 I don't even remember writing this and as an answer to the original comment I'm wrong but in terms of football League teams I'm right. You don't include the premier League cause it's not part of the football League.
I've been a Carlisle FC fan since 1979 and this moment, by far, is the greatest soccer moment ever in my life. I maybe the only american fan they have but I am one forever. And now with 15 minutes left in our last game vs Millwall, we're going to save our skins on the last day of the year...Again, Just like 1999 and 2001! Carlisle FC Forever!!!! Go Blues, Go Cumbrians!
Being a Chelsea fan I had never heard of this moment until today! Had tears streaming down my face like a baby....together with Leicester winning the Premier League this has to be one of football's finest moments!!
jus think , if Carlisle got relegated Leicester wouldn’t have won the league , cause our manager Nigel Pierson was Leicester when they won if we got relegated no one would want him as their manager
It’s a mark of how amazing a moment is when you are not even from the place, and don’t even care about the team under normal circumstances, and you see this and you’re STILL welling up inside and the hairs on your arms are STILL standing on end as you watch him score and see the celebrations. Amazing. Amazing.
im a scarborough fan and was 9 at the time . i remember being on the pitch and all the peterborough fans all stayed to find out the final result. This is truely one of the biggest moments in football history that sadly ended scarborough fc as club. First season in non league they finished 3rd which if they had play offs probs would of gone straight back up. sad sad times !
This is real English football to me. This is about passion for your local club, not money, trophies, awards or any of that peripheral stuff. No billionaire conglomerate foreign owners. No multi-million pound foreign players with no real understanding or allegience to the club or its fans beyond their massive paycheck. Most of all, this game is really about those loyal home town supporters who go to their struggling club's home and away games in the pissing rain to watch their team battle it out every week. This clearly meant more to Carlisle fans than the average Man Utd supporter will ever understand. I hope Jimmy Glass can look back on this with great pride, no matter what else happens in his life. Cheers from a Southampton fan.
I'm American and have little vested interest in soccer (typical, I know), but watching this video never gets old! What a dramatic ending, the winner from the on-loan goalie, no less! I love how the carlisle fan they're interviewing for the piece gets choked up and is almost at a loss of words when describing the moment when Jimmy Glass scored, years after the fact. If only people on this side of the pond could show that kind of love and passion for their teams, regardless of their histories
I'm a Leeds United fan ,but this to me will never be equalled. If you wrote a book and it had this ending ,people would say,no,too far fetched.Truth is stranger than fiction.Jimmy Glass, you will go down in football history. That will never happen again.Brilliant.
i dont support Carlisle, ive never even watched them ever, but this is the best football moment in history by far...almost makes me cry when i see it...go on Jimmy mate!
Newcastle United supporter here. Can't stop watching this. What the game's all about. Pure passion. Something most of the premier league 'superstars ' will never understand.
i'm no carlisle fan - but everytime i watch it it brings tears to the eyes. The playerss celebrations, fans, referee and the ballboys - just shows how much it means. Awesome. Love comment by kev johnson!
It's moments like this, that make you realise why it's more fun supporting a smaller more personal club that the Arsenals and Man Utds of this world. I was 14 in 1972 and was at Old Trafford to see my Bristol Rovers beat Man Utd 2-1! George Best missed a penatly! Sadly no cameras there! :-/ Who went down instead of Carlisle?
I'm a Plymouth fan myself but you can't take it away from the big clubs, they have their moments too. That last gasp City win against QPR to clinch the title was breath-taking. Same goes for Arsenal's last minute winner over Liverpool to claim the title in 1989. But yeah, supporting a smaller club is much more fun :)
+MiniRodz and then moments like this year. One of the most epic things ever to happen in football (leiceser, winning title), but it never had a single breathtaking moment like MC winning because we pretty much knew they'd win it since christmas!
This makes me want to cry every time I see it, just pure emotion. I don't support Carlisle, but this was just phenomenal. Sod Aguerooooooo, Jimmy Glass is the man
I'm a LFC fan but to see Jimmy Glass scoring a dramatic last minute goal to keep Carlisle Utd in the Football League but relegated Scarborough...just incredible! This is football at its greatest! Salute to you Jimmy!!
What a clip 😅👍 I'm a Newcastle fan and had tears in my eyes watching this. I was in the pub that day, and remember the reaction on the TV when the keeper kept Carlisle up with the last kick. It's also the biggest and greatest pile-on in the history of mankind 😆
You can feel the passion just watching, always enjoyed Carlisle away as a pompey fan, made a long weekend of it, fantastic scenery near by, and friendly people...
from a leeds fan this was and is the most memorable finale ever in a match! to save a football club from extinction is amazing...grass root and passion is amazing!
Jimmy Glass one of football's nice guys. I lived in Bournemouth for 10 years he played down there before Swindon & remember him taking time out of his warm up to chat with a less abled fan in a wheel chair at the side of the pitch & moved him so the supporter could see better. A true gentleman & legend at Carlisle for that goal!!!
I remember that match, on the radio they said that the goal-keeper had scored the winning goal at the very end of the match - then they said, 'Hang on, we'll just confirm that', (Probably because that sounded too far-fetched), then they found out it was true!!! Wow, fantastic for those of us in Carlisle. Brilliant!
who was the commentator here, his passion made the clip even better than it would have been (and it was phenomenal without his commentary but he took it to the next level)
every time i watch this, the blood runs cold and the stubble on my face stands on end. Anyone who says footbal is boring should watch this. I do have one question. did the fan who jumpeed the referee apologise to the ref afterwards?
lol "Soccer" as you Yanks call it is the most popular sport on planet Earth. Nobody plays American sports. Go watch your version of Rugby - grown men wearing a helmet and four tons of padding in case they get a bruise.
you must not be english, perfectly acceptable. jumping on a ref like that would require no apology. the ref would consider himself perfectly reasonable collateral damage to be part of it.
I live in Texas and manage Torquay United on FIFA 12 so I find it fun to listen to the Football League podcast. In the last pod they interviewed Glass so I thought if have a look. Brilliant moment.
i was there, this game. i am a newcastle fan who also has a massive interest in carlisle, i was 10 years old for this game. you can just see me on the video when he scores on the pitch haha! great video, thanks for posting, as far as im concerned the greatest footballing moment ever!
Recently blackpool beat west brom in the FA cup and its just such a shame there was any fans in the ground, sadly they have beaten by Brighton, but they beat west brom on pens with the keeper making 3 saves, just imagine the scenes!
I remember listening to this on the radio, waiting to see if Carlisle would make it through. When they announced that Carlisle had won, the radio presenter, on hearing that the goalie had scored the goal, waited until the result was confirmed because, presumably, he didn't know whether to believe the goalie had actually scored it!! Then, finally it came through that it was true, the goalie had scored it. YES.
Man United fan here and that was a great moment i read about it and now I've got to see a glimpse of it and I'm extremely happy for all the Carlisle supporters
what i love is the ballboys, they jump up and down, then run towards the pitch and wonder if theyre allowed on, then they see everyone else mobbing the players and they think "yeah!" and run on too. Great stuff.
I love this video what a magic moment jimmy glass they should have named a street after him in carlisle ,iam not a carlisle supporter but this video is brilliant and good to see carlisle are doing great just now during covid good luck and i hope you get promoted
That sent a shiver down my spine even though I seen it loads of times before, and even though I'm a Plymouth Argyle fan! These sort of moments are why I love football so much.
being a Carlisle fan all of my life, i was only a little boy when this happened, but this video makes me so proud to be a Cumbrian and a Carlisle Fan :')
I was 9 years old at the time, and at this match with my Dad. I am now 22, and I have lived in the States for 12 years now. I have NEVER forgotten what it was like to be at Brunton Park on that day. It was one of the most memorable days of my life, and I am so happy I was able to be a part of it. Makes me proud to be a Cumbrian, and I am a proud CUFC supporter :)
