Carlisle were heading out of the Football League as they were drawing 1-1 with Plymouth on the final day of the 1998/99 season. On-loan goalkeeper Jimmy Glass ventured up for a corner in injury time and smashed in a winner to save Carlisle.

Butterfly effect: Jimmy Glass doesn't score, Carlisle gets relegated, Nigel Pearson sinks into obscurity, never rises to the heights of managing Leicester, doesn't save them, they don't win the league.

Scarborough would never return to the football league, and were liquidated in 2007 (but there’s a phoenix club called Scarborough Athletic). Carlisle were relegated briefly in the mid-2000’s but have otherwise remained in the football league. Just amazing the effect that this goal had for both clubs.

Still the most unexpected, most unbelievable moment in football history for me. Absolute scenes when that went in. I'll never forget my dad finding me on the terrace when the ball hit the net and saying 'it was Jimmy Glass' I've told the story about a million times and will never stop haha
@RW-nr6bh
@RW-nr6bh 3 месяца назад
It was certainly unexpected, as a neutral who happened to be at Scarborough that day I can well remember the shock and disbelief rippling out from people who had radios or get calls or texts with the Carlisle score (no internet smartphones back then). In terms of shock factor; everyone in the box and it happens to fall to the keeper, yes it's a surprise but I think sometimes it gets a bit blown out of proportion. Nobody would have been terribly surprised at the start of day to see Carlisle win and Scarborough draw. It was memorable though for how it happened. It's not really up there with Denmark winning the European Championship in 1992 after failing to qualify in terms of shock value, or even Newport County's great escape that sent Hartlepool down.
@martyn7988
@martyn7988 3 месяца назад
@RW-nr6bh that's the point though. It's the "how it happened" that made it one of the greatest moments in footballing history and why it's still spoken about 25 years later. There's great escapes every season, but there's never been another one where an on loan goalkeeper who only ever made 3 appearances for the club scored with the final kick of the entire season

I was at the Scarborough ground that day having driven up that morning from Oxfordshire. @@craigflebu-swainson5195 Oh, thank you for this. If, as you say, the rule for emergency loanees was in place at the start of the season, then I have to agree that no rules were breached. I suspect that rule was put in place to help cash-strapped lower league clubs, who could then afford to sell their permanent players and offload the wages, and then bring in a quick fix if needed. I don't like it, but in hard times I understand its need. My own opinion is that clubs should have to field an outfield player in goal if caught short. According to The Totally Football Show podcast I listen to, Independiente in Argentina have just done this in a recent game!

@@FanofAslan Rule was agreed by all the football league teams at the time of it being created. Scarborough and Hartlepool tried to complain but the higher ups in their club had agreed to the rule. It was put in place as it was deemed by whoever came up with the idea that goalkeeper is a specialist position and under the circumstances of a team recalling their loan player back and the back up keeper being injured it was approved that an emergency loan could be made for the position of goalkeeper as agreed in the rule. Couldn't be any clearer really. Whether that rule still exists, I don't know as it is over 20 years ago. Also over countries will likely have different rules.

Those were the days...Back when the BBC, ITV and C4 had actual quality programmes. Now it’s all gone to ruin - they can’t compete with the vast choice of channels, and streaming services so have to produce stripped down, budgeted shows as they simply can’t compete on a bigger scale. Gladiators, Generation Game, TFI Friday, Games Master, Gazetta Football Italia, Noel’s House Party, Going Live, SM:TV, Top of the Pops...Take me back to the 90s!

Goalkeeper that was signed after deadline day scores in time that should've been added on at the end of the first half. Doesn't sound quite as magical. On a positive note Scarborough Athletic, the club that was formed after Scarborough were wound up, have just won promotion to the national league North.
