I saw Jeff Sipe aka Apt Q258 play with Aquarium Rescue Unit many moons ago @ Berkeley Cafe in Raleigh. I sat literally 10 feet from his throne. Best right hand I've ever seen.
Thanks guys. Between you and Tribal Tech you've ruined listening to any other groups. Because no others can compare! ;) Thanks for the post and the HD.
Holy crap... I'm kind of ashamed to admit that I have never heard of Jimmy Herring until tonight. Thanks RU-vid recommendations. I think I have a lot of interesting music in my future
@@shawnnerveza5563 yeah…glad you added Jazz Is Dead to the comment. I had actually kind of forgotten about that project. Gave me a reason to go back and listen again. It really is some fantastic work. Thanks!
And that drummer is Jeff Sipe. Lives in Brevard NC and I've played with him before down in Greenville SC. He's insane, and if you pay him 100 bucks, hell come play with ya if he likes what your doing
There are plenty of guitarists who can play fast. To each their own, but for me Jimmy's combination of blues and jazz in his playing sets him apart from those with similar technical skill. His runs are so unique, I've never heard anyone play like him. And the dude NEVER makes a mistake. I've seen him in concert for 2 hours or more and he never missed a note.
I completely agree. I love his use of his whammy bar (not on this song) and volume knob. He gets the coolest effect, like a slide. One of the most unique guitarists out there. I saw him play with Phil Lesh and Friends with Warren Haynes for 4 shows, had to be some of the best music I have ever seen.
Believe it or not, I've seen him make a mistake on a video on RU-vid which I just noticed for the first time a few minutes ago. It was on an easy part that I'm sure he would have liked to have back. It might be the only one he's ever made. But what an amazing player and he has the best tone I've ever heard.
The little smug smiles they give each other when they know they just killed a solo or little riff :) and the others just smile back like damn right you just did that!
I'd Like that a hundred times if I could. Has everything I love in a tune: great groove, tight rhythm section, Hammond, great guitar tone, and a couple of twists here and there. Thanks for the video!
i'm here to testify that Jimmy has always been amicable and has a kind gentle way about him. he's 1 year younger, went to High School together. in maybe '77 one Thursday i recall i was not playing my guitar, but out partying, and Jimmy was playing the school Talent Show, "Carry On My Wayward Son" it seems i recall. i see him on occasion, last time 2009 Raleigh Jazz Guitar Festival/Raleigh NC (John McClaughlin was also there). anyway always a treat to hear Jimmy, he's one unique guitarist with a feel and heart in his music that provides a wonderful experience.
Dead Voltage, you think Guthrie is a better guitarist than Jimmy Herring? I like Guthrie fine- he's an amazing mechanic, but he lacks Jimmy's depth. Of course, almost everyone does
I sold my Japanese 82 Strat... One of the dumbest things I've ever done, one of the best guitars I've ever had. Japanese teles and strats can kill. Bought for 400 sold for 575... Still my loss.
Jimmy has a very unique voice. I live in Atehns, GA for a while and I can tell you that the bass player is almost as good as Jimmy on the guitar. No jk.
I was getting chills listening to this, and don't know why? I guess no guitar players these days try to push to this limit anymore. This is otherworldly stuff ... Jimi Hendrix was a bad dude playing in a trio !!!!!
If you like Jimmy, check out Derek Trucks and Tedeschi Trucks Band. Derek is definitely a disciple of Herring, and that band balances the line between being a true jam band and being a more straight-ahead blues/soul/Americana/rock kind of band. The only other player who I believe is at an equal level as Jimmy Herring on guitar is Derek Trucks (I honestly put Derek _just_ a notch higher than Jimmy, but that's more of a personal opinion), so you will certainly enjoy them. A good starting place might be any live youtube vid of them playing Midnight in Harlem. It's a great representation of what they do as a band.
Saw these boys last night open for John McLaughlin in Portland, OR. Not only had I not heard of them but didn't know McLaughlin had an opening act at this show. I figured they must be real good, if they're opening for John. These boys are BAMF's...each and every one of them. I was seriously blown away by the musicianship of each man. At the end, both bands jammed together...EPIC!!
And that's how it's done, ladies and gentlemen. These guys are the quintessential "hip cats on the scene "! Great groove, hip outside lines and general nonchalant musicality. Great big fun that is sadly uncommon among younger musicians these days.
I'm gonna tab it out at some point. Transcribe is a GREAT program that allows the user to slow down/ speed up audio as well as video and change pitch etc.... I use it for transcribing all the time.
I just googled Jimmy Herring after I read an old interview where Tosin Abasi namedropped him as a ”super cool player”. Was surprised to see he’s a greybeard white guy with a funk band. And then his solo blew me away. So unique and refreshing!
do you still remember tosin's interview? i'll like to see it, tosin knows a lot of a really cool players that most of the people like me, expect to be more prog and that stuff but then you search it and you find this kind of things. beautiful stuff tho...
panchamkauns I found him because he is the favorite guitarist of the guitarist from Mungion. If youre lookin for a band that's innovating out of love for their many influences such as Herring, Frank Zappa, the headhunters, cory henry, chick corea, and tower of power, I'd recommend Mungion
We Spreadheads are very fortunate to have this musican, Jimmy Herring, play with our band, Widespread Panic, every night. He is certainly worthy of all the praise....and more. But a very down to earth, humble guy.
Love these Guys, My Favorite !! Listen to "Matts Funk" w/ a Cup of Java First thing in the A.M. To Start My Day, Everyday !! Great Job, Great Tune, and I will see You All @ Lincoln Theatre in D.C. Nov 11th. Until then, Keep Groovin', Ur Friend, Clyde Johnson !!
I would LOVE to see anything more from this or any other sessions of Jimmy Herring Band! The sound from Miraverse is INCREDIBLE, even though I'm not listening through studio monitors (I'm sure the monitors are phenomenal there!)--- it sounds wonderful! The room really sounds GREAT! Wish I could see the entire session, or I'd love to buy a DVD of something like that! Really appreciate you taking the time to post these 2 tracks... Love to see more Jimmy Herring session videos! Thanks!!
Is this performance/recording available to purchase as an MP3? Couldn’t find on Amazon or ITunes. I still purchase MP3s and make mix CDs for my car. Living my GenX street dream. 😊
Killer guitar tone ! I didn't know this man, but I like his playing a lot. I'm can hear bits of some of my favourite players here, like Robert Ford and John Scofield, yet of course no mere emulation but a developed personal language.
You're like an advanced technique and jazz leaning version of grateful dead set up from the two songs I heard. I bet you could diversify by using more modal music like mahavishnu or Zappa or go through stories using instruments like utilized by Fripp, R with his King Crimson projects. That keyboard player could easily play in the faux pas orchestra styles of ELP, or Gentle Giant or Neon bass guy, add a banjo like bela fleck, or mandolin like string cheese incident, the sonic variety will flower in your fans' mind
These guys are great of course, but it does sound like a jazz band playing funk. Not real funk! Jimmy is my favorite guitar player though, no matter what he's doing.
