At Dead of Night is a unique point and click horror game experience. It splices real life actors with pre-rendered computer graphics to create a realistic and immersive horror experience. We play a young woman called Maya who attempts to save her friends from the murderous hotel owner, a man named Jimmy Hall. Along the way Maya speaks with the ghosts of Jimmys victims in order to discover the mystery behind this haunted hotel.

If Jimmy notices you entering a room, once you hide in the wardrobe he'll pretend to leave but actually hide in the bathroom. You can still get out, but he'll nail you if you turn away from the door. The bathroom door closing sounds slightly different from the main door. That's how you can tell if he's left or not. If you hide in the bathroom he'll just wait outside the door and clobber you senseless when you come out. Edit: if you leave it to the last second to hide, he cottons on straight away and just opens the wardrobe/bathroom door to smash your head in.

I love the creativity of this game, it takes a concept that is quite common and basic but gives it such a nice story and amazing graphics, I love the switches between the game and the cutscenes and it made me feel so terrified thag I turned down the volume so I wouldn't jump out of my skin. I'm glad you played it cause I felt like it was a game you would really love and enjoy it so I'm glad you have.

I think "Hugo Punch" is an obvious reference to the Punch and Judy Show puppets (right down to the beating or "Slap-Stick"). There's even a portrait of Mr. Punch (the puppet, not Jimmy's character) in the scene following Maya turning down the performance and "Hugo" speaking up for the first time. Thought you ought to know...

Scrying mirrors are actually real life black glass mirrors. They are used in the dark by those that can see and communicate with spirits on the mortal plain. Much like how Maya does. It is believed that mirrors possess spirit energy and is why often mirrors are covered in sheets when people die to ensure their spirits move on.

I like how this game does use real world methods for hunting and communicate with spirits. Spirit boxes for magnifying voices and talking to the dead. Scrying mirrors are for premonitions. Flickering lights are signs of paranormal activity as energy needs to be drawn from somewhere and thus electronics are the easiest way to draw energy. Items that hold significance to entities are ways to draw them to you as spirits can attach themselves to them as haunted objects. That's why you don't take home old antiques of lockets or painting/photos, dolls and toys too. Its a bad idea.
