People who know the BUSINESS best eg (not rabid fans) have mostly agreed it was a WORK. It's too contrived both before and after the actual 'screwjob' portion to be a shoot. The anger Bret had was from how he knew he was exiting the company. He didn't like it but he agreed to it, which made it almost a 'no need to sell' It was all set up well in advance and it played on the natural heat that Shawn and Bret already had with each other. This isn't what created the heat. Come on, people, wake up: There's no way, first of all, that the cameras would have kept rolling afterwards and caught the exact reactions at just the right times and angles and then shown Bret's 'punch' to Vince, which he sold well, unless it was designed. The only things you see in wrestling are what the one in charge (by extension, the cameras) wants you to see. It was the best work in history because people are still discussing it. That doesn't mean Brett would have been all smiles, therefore it was a shoot, It was Vince's way to get over as a heel and his way to send off Bret red hot despite Bret's anger at having to drop the belt to Shawn.

People love a conspiracy - myself too... but nah, it wasn’t a work for me. The heat Bret & Shawn had was real in my opinion. And I think it got to the point where they both couldn’t be in the same organisation anymore because Vince couldn’t manage them both at their egotistical worst. So then it’s about dropping 1 of them out, and Shawn was younger and had more years in him (or so Vince would have thought at that time) so they got rid of Bret and it fitted in perfectly with the “old dinosaur goes to WCW”.. narrative that Vince always pushed.

I'm 70/30 it was a work. But Bret got dvd sales from wrestling with shadows and wwe sold the dvd, Vince decided to put the belt on Bret in July. Around the time he told Bret he couldn't afford his contract! Did Vince have an idea something might happen? Did Vince know Bret was stubborn enough not to put Shawn over down the line ? Bret took things to seriously back then, if he put Shawn over we wouldn't be talking about the SS97. But then Bret wouldn't have got all that money and publicity for all these years. Bret is sticking to his script. Also Bret worked the boys after he put Shawn over the year before at WM 96, he told Shawn let the boys believe we have real heat. So if he's done it before!!!!!

Lots of talk here about "insubordination" and how Bret was in the wrong. Bret had creative control in his contract. Wrestlers aren't employees. They are contractors and the terms of their contracts govern. Plenty of wrestlers before then (and since) had dictated how they would exit the company or how their characters would develop because they had that creative control, and there were no issues. The problem here was that we were at the height of the Monday night wars and there was an extreme sense of distrust. Alundra Blayze had already gone over to WCW with the WWE women's title and thrown the belt in the trash live on Nitro. For Vince, he just couldn't risk it. Even though Bret wasn't going to do anything of that sort (and we later found out Bischoff wasn't interested in doing something like that, either). In the end, the paranoia go the best of Vince. I don't blame him for that. It was all really a product of circumstance and he had to do what he felt was in the best interests of his business. But to say Bret was "insubordinate" or in "in the wrong" isn't accurate. He was doing what he was contractually able to do. From the standpoint of right or wrong, it was actually Vince who was in the wrong because he breached a term of Bret's contract, namely his ability to have creative control over his character and his matches.

It's not like Brets value was going to go down. It's a belt given to someone the owner thinks will draw money from people wanting to be entertained by a scripted fight. So, wwe didnt make a dime off of their content being on a documentary? And he just let Brett spit on him, mic up, go into his office and hit him? Yep, I'm the moron. Santa, the Easter bunny and the tooth fairy are fake too. There, now I just fucked you hole life up!

Exactly!!! A complete work, and it's even silly to be discussing it. So many things would NOT have happened if it was all real, as I named above. All the people who were either not attached with WWE anymore or had no vested interest in future work with them that I've heard have all agreed on this. It was all set up months in advance and it all played out well afterwards. No way in hell that's just coincidence and they 'ran' with it. It killed 3 birds with 1 stone.

Both you and hall are idiots if you believe it was worked!

@@michaelallanrubin2376 my friend, you're the idiot. It is extremely obvious that it's a work just from watching survivor series 1997. Throughout the show they make it so obvious that the ending to the match is gonna have some sort of controversial ending, they might as well be telling you "hey guys, will bret be screwed tonight"? And if you watch the Bret Hart documentary, it's even more obvious that it was a work.

I always said this. Earl was loyal to Bret and said to brey I got your back and earl is saying that he didn't know until he got until the ring what was going on? Then why didn't earl tell Bret in the ring wen earl got that belt from him? If I was earl and u knew what they were going to do and how fuck up It was going be to Bret I would told him and tell him to come up with something quick

Easy to say when it isn't the job you worked for over a decade. Bret was an ass for asking him, guys making 3 mill a year when he leaves and wants a peon to risk his livlihood, how he feeds his family. There was a lot wrong with what Vince did but what Bret did to Earl was wrong and he still cries over it. He got heat from the locker room for sure as well. Dick move.

LMAO this isn't kindergarten. This is his job career as well and best believe he didnt't make millions like Bret Fart to save up and live on for the next 20, 30 yrs! Sending bis kids to college and also wanting to go on pursuit what he obviously loved maybe even for a chance of Hall of Fame! 'Being friends'.... yeah some ppl are friends with virtually anyone. Ppl you get tossed up at schools, work environment are 'there', if it wasn't for them, it'd be another bunch of ppl! What's it mean being friendly if job instructions go against boss's order?! They still can play Monopoly once a year being in the same city - da heck - if Butthurt Pinky Boy is such a good REAL friend, and no whatever colleague over yrs! Bret screwed Bret not honoring No. 1 rule in Sports Entertainment! He better had sticked to Olympic wrestling, but oh wait no money nor fame! 🤷‍♀️
