Bonham Site -► www.johnbonham.co.uk/ Jimmy Page was interviewed on the Lauren Laverne BBC radio 6 show in anticipation of the premiere of 'The John Bonham Story' radio documentary narrated by Dave Grohl. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00s...
As MANY people (including myself) consider Led Zeppelin to be the greatest band ever, it really spoke to HOW great Bonzo was, as once he died, so did the band. Bonzo was SO integral to what Led Zep was about, that it would have been impossible to replicate his drumming AND presence, so that was the end of the greatest band ever.
@@bujfvjg7222 Ya mate here's one for you to study.. Why was Cannibus banned GLOBALLY in the 1920s-30s when nobody ever died from it and is still banned today except in the Netherlands? 🤨
He's been awarded the OBE, Order of the British Empire, which is just below being Knighted. I agree, Jimmy Page is one of The Greatest songwriters, producers, etc., I honestly believe that a British citizen must have never sought out another country in order to escape the British taxation system, which was just archaic in the seventies; I don't believe Sir Elton John, Sir Mick Jagger, or Sir Paul McCartney ever moved to France, Switzerland, or St. Lucia to avoid paying eighty plus percent of their earnings to the Crown. That's just my belief. Though I agree with you.
Bonham was a physical force and he was able to play with Jones, who was really a musician. Page's ability goes without saying. Those three could really get it rolling.
jimmy....you created the best rock band ever.....all 4 of you were the best of the best...and i thankyou sir for the incredible music that has been there for me over all these yrs...x
Plant and Page used to rape underage girls threesome. Bonham never participated. Bonham was the one who could intervene, take screaming child away from them, calm them down and send them home. After I read about it I stopped listening to these sickos.
@@trailrunner78 I read about it in British newspaper. They interviewed girl who went through "whole lotta love" when she was basically a child. Police never investigated sex crimes committed by "celebrities" in sixties and seventies.
John Paul Jones? He's awesome! Listen to The Lemon Song on The 2nd album or anything he ever played. What a tasteful Bassist not to mention the orchestration on Stairway to Heaven etc. etc...
In "It Might Get Loud" Page talks about "the whisper before the thunder", and if one listens to most of Zep's live music, Jones & Bonham made 95% of the volume, with Page simply adding small bits of guitar perfection. 3:50, JP say's "there were four of us, all equally talented"...so you, I, and JP recognize Jones' talent. That's all that counts! ;)
Agreed. But I get something else from the Stones. However when I need to hear a particular tune its most often a Zeppelin song stuck my head in a good way. Focus...Achille's Last Stand. I dare you NOT to go listen to it right now.
These guys are humble and very appreciative of their fans - and Bonham was and still would be the same way. It's a shame he did not live to see the full effect of what he did.
I always loved Lauren Laverne, she always sounded like she has genuine love and enthusiasm for music and her guests. And skillfully avoided asking dumb questions. Nice interview
I pretty much agree with that. Bonham was in a class all his own... But let's not forget Ian Paice from Deep Purple... I don't think there's ever been a better 'listener' than Ian Paice... he was remarkable in how he could follow and 'compliment'... the frantic freeform phrasing of Blackmore and Lord.
He has moved me and influenced me musically since before I even became a teenager - I turned 13 in '79 and I was a Bonham/Zeppelin freak by then... Hail hail, John Henry Bonham...
Exactly why I love the English - their innate intelligence and articulate ways - as mentioned above even the women have great insight..Its quite evident to me and anyone seriously involved in music Led Zep remains the pinnacle of solid, impressively arranged rock that will endure..no one has come close to them still..45 years my oh my
Yup! A Russian woman once told me and she said! Love and having sex gets you more active like younger, happy and a new person! She's 74 years old but she looks like 35 to 45 years old and much better! Active! She's great! I worked with her once!🤗 Maybe, that's why Jimmy Page gets younger ones! The older they're getting, kicks them out of his life than go for another one! He still kicking in 2021!😄
Backbone indeed. If the guitarist, singer or bass player make mistakes live - the band carries on. If the drummer makes a mistake, the whole thing goes to shit.
I seen Zeppelin live in Louisville, Ky 1977. It was by far the best rock concert ever, and I've seen some great bands. Plant is the lone holdout, always has been. It's not just because of Bonzo either
I remember driving around Wales at the weekend in the late 70s with ZEP on full blast on the tape player. Wherever you went you could guarantee only other ZEP fans would recognize the music, as the BBC kept them off the airwaves, so the average person had no idea they were the biggest band in the world.
That was partly because the band released very few singles. Zeppelin might have got airplay on the Friday Rock Show but you wouldn't hear them on Steve Wright in the Afternoon.
@@geoffpoole483 True up to a point - but at the time very little "Heavy Rock" was being played on British radio, whether that was Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden or even Deep Purple - hence the emergence of a plethora of Rock-only radio stations in the 21st C.
Page is a real gentleman and a super nice guy..oh yeh a a living legend! Was he the best? That is based on personal opinion and current trends. But he was definitely one of the most influential rock guitarist of all time.
I've yet to hear anyone that can match John Bonham as far as rock drumming goes. If you build a band from the foundation (the drummer) up then Zeppelin always had a a head start on every other band because of Bonham.
I am a huge Zeppelin and Bonham fan and appreciate Bonham for his unique style of playing. I can think of quite a few drummers who can match or exceed Bonham as far as technical excellence is concerned (Neal Peart, for example). But style-wise no drummer should be compared to any other, because each is unique. Unfortunately death creates legends. Nobody fully appreciates talented people while they are still alive.
*MarkTaylor* ''I can think of quite a few drummers who can match or exceed Bonham ,'' Just as Ginger Baker is not only not better but not as good. Bonham IS the greatest Rock drummer EVER! It's like those idiots who call Hendrix or Page 'sloppy' while praising idiots like Steve Vai or Yngve Malmsteen, All 2nd raters without creativity! Give me John Densmore or Ringo (both underrated) who actually play songs not just show off technique
@@chetspoog5736 Good as Bonham's ' technical ability ' was , his playing had little to do with that . He had a personality in his playing . He could and did execute some crazy fills but they always served the song. I don't think anyone since has had the combination of skill and musical inventiveness . Every track he recorded is different and remarkable for it's drum sound or drumbeat.
i am a massive fan of led zepplin and jimmy page i dont think you realise he did more than just playing he was also the producer and part time engineer i dont think you realise how much respect this man deserves.
When you remove a quarter from a dollar, you no longer have a dollar. It must be thrill Page, and the other's, that so many young kid's, young boy's and girl's are playing on their music 50 year's later. It's beautiful!
I love Zep for so many reasons. Not only great musicians but great song writers who could not only craft a great song but take you to places in imagination that few band can. Plus they rocked your head, heart, and groin. lol. They played with great power, but were never nasty just to offend. And always the perfect gentlemen. God bless them all.
Any number of Zep vids wherein you can catch Page usually in his solo part of a song, turn around and looking at Bonham like wow, that bit of drumming you just did there blew me away.
Page was very smart in that he put that awesome drummer front and center in the mix. He knew that Bonham was gonna propel the music with power and finesse and take the role of the drummer to an even higher level than his predecessors. With Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page showed the rest of the rock world how a great drummer should be presented on a recording. Another example of a great drummer who was given the proper prominence in a recording is Les Sampson on the Stray Dog album "While You're Down There".
Jimmy. The coolest mate to ever sling a six string shooter over his shoulder and have the best drummer in Rock N' Roll history. Sad the party animal of a man who farmed and tuned engines and mortared brick had to pass away before his time. He lived with a lust for Rock N' Roll and freedom.
Well, the Stones are an amazing band and in a class by themselves. You should never short change greatness. I'm a Zep and Jimmy fan first and foremost and always have been. And I certainly put them at the top, but you can't knock a great band like the Stones. They are in a class by themselves too. Amazing songs, playing, and diversity. So give 'em their props.
No no no no he was very talented, he played keyboard and bass...ECT. Very talented indeed! He was pretty much all the backing sound in all of Zeppelins songs!
Great Post. It does my heart great to hear Mr. Page talking so highly of the greatest drummer who has ever lived, of course you have to give an honorary mention to Keith Moon, but yes in my opinion Bonzo was the best.
Ian Stewart, piano, was the first to answer Brian's ad and Mick and Keith joined a month later. After a year Ian was out but remained within the band in other aspects.
When I was 13 and Jimmy 26, I would have gone with him in a heartbeat. And Lori Maddox and her parents were o.k. with the relationship, from what I've read about it.
Jimmy could have formed a band at that time where he was the feature, he was the star, everything revolves around him. He was a seasoned session musician and well-known with the Yardbirds. Instead, the unselfish nature of Jimmy and the idea to have a complete band of musicians to really move the music was his vision and choice. Thus was assembled the greatest band of all time.
People don't realize it, but Zeppelin had to end when Bonzo died, because he was as much a part of their songwriting process as any other member. Listen to the Studio Bootlegs that are out there, you can hear Bonzo in the background always guiding the tunes!
I wonder if, had Bonham lived, he would have been more willing in later life to give interviews. It’s a well known fact that he detested music journalists because of the bad press they gave Zep in the early years, so he only did a few. It would be interesting to have heard all of the stories from his perspective and to hear his view on things.
I lived in New Orleans and Page was married to a New Orleans' girl. I ran into him at Barnes and Noble at a sale table. It was so funny, but I didn't bother him -- let the man shop for a book!
I believe her name (first or last) was Saurez, therefore the song title. I had a contact in New Orleans that mentioned this years ago, not sure if they were married though...but my contact knew her as they were friends, I think she was a bit younger than him, apparently he only dated much younger girls as is today.
Yupp, I totally agree. His drumming appeals to a lot of guitar players including me. I think it's because he played very straight with out having to prove anything to other drummers ....
The one thing not mentioned here was when they heard and decided on Robert plant being their lead singer plant said he would only join if Bonham was the drummer plant and Bonham were close friends for awhile
I wonder if Robert Plant has it in him to articulate to a reporter like that. I can tell if somebody has expanded help.Plant is just himself.I love them both
Ok let's review. Of the original Rolling Stones lineup, let's say from '63 on, of Jagger, Richards, Jones, Wyman & Watts... Jones was essentially fired from the group in June of '69, and as nearly every Stones fan knows,he subsequently died the following month. His replacement, Mick Taylor, stayed with the band until December of '74, then of course Ron Wood filled his position, and remains to this day. Bill Wyman quietly departed in '92, and has never been officially replaced. There you have it.
They did carry on in 2008 recording 80 songs with Jason Bonham, Miles Kennedy, Chris Cornell, and Steven Tyler. They just don't want anyone to admit it or tell it like it is...
