Watch Louise Molony's interview with Jimmy Page, ahead of the release of the re-mastered Led Zeppelin I, II and III albums with previously unheard companion audio discs.
This is about the most animated I've seen him in an interview, such a joy to listen to, all of the history, his timeless wisdom - oh! He winks at her at the very end! Devastatingly charming soul.
2019: Just now seeing this.. love Jimmy’s laugh & vast knowledge.. could listen to him all day❣️ I watch Robert’s interviews & he also has that fondness when talks of Jimmy.. Thank you Sir Jimmy for putting together the best four musicians ever🔥
The members of Led Zeppelin were simply MEANT to be together. What followed,as we know, were the jaw dropping songs and performances that created legions of life long fans, and influences budding musicians to this day.
Zeppelin was so much more than what Heavy Metal is. They could play anything, any style and do it all - well. They didnt stick to one sound. You cant label Zeppelin into any single catagory. They touched on so many areas and sounds. They are the Greatest - Period. I knew this since the first time I heard them at age 14, in 1987
Hi Colt. I rank Led Zeppelin as being the 4th greatest band of all time: #1. The Beatles #2. The Rolling Stones #3. The Who #4. Led Zeppelin #5. Chicago Honorable Mention: Pink Floyd Queen The Eagles The Beach Boys Fleetwood Mac
@@JimmyPlato1 I agree with your list. THE WHO NEVER get the respect they deserve. They were EASILY as important and groundbreaking as Zeppelin. The Tommy Rock opera and WHOSE NEXT album are MASTERPIECES. THE BEATLES WILL ALWAYS BE THE GOVERNORS. Its not even CLOSE. And the Stones for PURE ROCK AND ROLL unforgettable RIFFS and LONGEVITY. Have earned their stripes. So yes that list is FANTASTIC.
Jimmy Page...for as big a star as he is...he really tries to listen hard to the question and give thoughtful answers. He takes it seriously. He won't talk about much more than the music. He has a narrow focus, but he really tries to share. An interesting person.
knowsmebyname I’m sure his focus is not so narrow when just talking off the cuff in a non-interview situation. I hear he’s highly intelligent on a variety of subjects.
@@bellabunnell3174 Yes it is. He’s learned from years of having to deal with the press. They (especially Rolling Stone magazine) have not always been kind to Zeppelin and, I’m sure, he is quite wary because of that.
Page is the guru of rock. He’s so centered. I’ve never seen him be anything but calm, polite, and well spoken. You don’t see much ego at all. And i think this lent itself to his ability to focus and generate consistently well-written and composed albums year after year. Not a bad one in the bunch. Genius.
Jimmy has mounted an impressive promotional media blitz which heralds the archival releases. You might expect he would tire of the same old questions, but its obvious that he relishes a discussion of Zeppelin's early creative process. It seems to enliven him, so this becomes quite a victory lap for him, arguably one of the finest musicians of the past fifty years.
Argueably? There's no argument.....he would be that on his level of playing ability..."Top 5 Guitarists" is a pretty exclusive club to begin with, but add his abilities as an innovator and producer and yeah, no argument. None.
Totally agree.. I wish he could have kept expanding more post Led Zep as a solo guitarist ...who knows in what direction he would have gone? I see him guesting with orchestras and having his writing live on in that venue too. He can't be pigeon holed
"ramble on" "oh that's my favorite". i couldn't tell u which is my favorite cuz it changes from day to day, week to week. most all of them r my favorites.
Jimmy's body language is pretty interesting. He is almost constantly emulating guitar play. His left hand, palm up and out, making sliding motions. His right hand palm inward, making strumming-like gestures and finding pressure on his chest or leg. If you watch carefully, and know a little about playing a guitar, you can see his left hand is at times actually mimicking his voice inflections on a imaginary fret board. Pretty cool.
I'll never forget the first Zeppelin I heard thanks to my older brother around 1972, who also put my first guitar in my hands. I'll also remember taking some piano lab class in 8th Grade and I brought the sheet music to Stairway in. The teacher rolled her eyes when she saw it was Zeppelin, UNTIL, she actually began playing it. Jimmy, John Paul Jones, John Bonham, and Robert were/are EPIC. Just really look at what all Jimmy Page has played on being a "gun for hire" studio musician! EPIC!
The power and dynamics are what make Zeppelin for me, I love the band. Smoke a joint and listen to Gallows Pole, you'll be in heaven. Tremendous band, I'll always treasure their records.
I'm kinda blown away by these videos on Y.T. of teens and even 20 somethings only recently discovering Led Zeppelin. It seemed for along time their music was passed on from one generation to the next one coming up. Seems like there was a almost pause period.
The guy is genuine,he knows he is being filmed, and a lot of people, are going to be watching- yet he is so matter of fact, and laid back-that you realize, this guy is simplicity itself-and real genuine things in life-are simple! For something to be good,and,real- it has to stand the test of time!I like them in 1970-and I still like them now!
Listen to his answer at 15:30. I was not a big fan "back in the day", if I was I would have been at the "Last Dance" at the Eissporthalle because I was just a few miles down the road that night. I have only recently just started listen to Zeppelin 'seriously', (forced me to dig my stereo out of storage and hook it up) and it's exactly as Jimmy describes for me now, what a trove of treasures to discover! The fact that this is possible 40-50 years down the road is amazing, it speaks the the quality not only of the musicianship but of Jimmy's vision all the way through it, that NONE of this stuff sounds dated, and that is why the Zeppelin will never come to earth. Thanks so much Jimmy, God Bless.
josey wales I was a late comer to Zeppelin , I even turned down a free ticket to see them in 73. Made up for it since though, even got to spend Some time with jimmy as the band I was in shared management. Lovely guy & ask him about the Yardbirds & his eyes light up. ,
Jimmy was largely self-taught from the age of 12; Ritchie Blackmore was formally taught from the age of 11 for a year, including learning classical influences that have stayed with him from that time onwards.
Newly minted 14 years olds happen occur every day. Led Zeppelin II is the Gold Standard. I was 14 in October of 1969. Led Zeppelin II was my introduction to Blues-Based Hard Rock. The power of LZ II will be impacting 14 year olds long after all of the 70's artists have passed on.
@@THX-ov8rv I don't understand your sentence, and I didn't type the words "merely human" anywhere in my comment. But I do know that when you hear the phrase "merely human" it signifies the fact that as human beings, we are far from perfect and although we are at the top of the food chain, judging by the latest in the current news cycle-we have a long way to go. Are you a Zep fan? peace, Treff
really nice interview... With a nice intimate feeling as if Jimmy was talking to a personal friend and sharing some remembrance of the emotional impact on those are early years and never heard him talk about in such detail how they first all got together that was really cool
🇺🇸 Mr. Jimmy Page You did a wonderful Job Putting a Band Together.! 😊👍🏼 NONE Of The Members Had To Stay Everyone was Free To Play their instrument The way they wanted.!!! 👍🏼 4 young musicians on a Roll To Express There Talented & Had Much Fun BEING FREE TO EXPRESS IT.!!! God Blessed You 4 Amen 🙏
Michael Stephen I walked by his house last month. He’s also being harassed by the opposite neighbor - his music studio is on that side and he’s concerned about the work noise affecting the studio. His house is absolutely beautiful.
MsAppassionata Holland Park, Kensington. There aren’t high fences or anything - it’s right at the street. I stood right up to it, studying his gargoyle gutter spout.
I agree they were and still are the very best band ever Just Magic!! I was lucky to be able to listen to them in High school and on my era of music!! I agree Ramble on my all time favorite, Jimmy is Brilliant!! Great interview, And I remember exactly where I was when Kashmir Came out it was so great!
Communication Breakdown was the very first song I heard from this group Led Zeppelin. To be honest, I didn't know what to think. But it got my attention and my life has never been the same ever since.
06:34 This is the biggest worry that I have abut music moving forward. The album format, which depends, to a degree, on a physical product that you can hold in your hands, being eliminated. It makes the musical tangible. I am just not sure you can achieve that thru just a digital download. Moreover, in the future we could see such legendary bands like LZ, The Who, or Pink Floyd - or at least bands with these sort of aspirations - being shut out of the music business. Bands that need full albums to express themselves as opposed to a hit single. With the exception of a few tunes like "Whole Lotta Love," LZ was not a singles bands. Songs like "Over the Hills and Far Away" and "thank You" only became famous because they were on albums.
I PRAY!!! Zeppelin tours one last time....for those of us who have played there albums over and over and watched every concert footage, bootleg albums event he band would tell you u need to see them live. PLZ TOUR ONE MORE TIME!!!!.....Then one more album ;)
MovieHound17 Unfortunately you can never really see Led Zeppelin live again because John Bonham died 39 years ago. The closest you can ever hope to come is if his son Jason decides to perform with the others again.
Likes the sound of her own voice....I mean come on, Jimmy is a very polite man so when he has to actually run over top of you to answer your question, you're a blabbermouth....
She’s just trying to make it work for radio - and Jimmy isn’t good at picking up her cues so it makes for a bit unpolished. It’s not meant to be an interview just for zepheads so she being pretty minimal in the questions (which if you listen are all ways of introducing background and context for listeners that don’t know the story) ps idk why I’m replying to old comments but there you go
Greatest guitarist-Jimmy Page Greatest vocalist-Robert Plant Greatest drummer-John Bonham One of the greatest bassist's-John Paul Jones ….I wonder what it is that makes LED ZEPPELIN SO GREAT?
it's such a pleasure to listen to Jimmy Page talk about his bands cause the guy is a living Legend and him, Zeppelin, Beatles, Stones, Deep Purple, Queen,Floyd, Yardbirds, Aerosmith, Def Leppard were the real music this planet had, and whatever came after them were in general shit.
merseywhogirl oh yeah, you're right I forgot to mention them as well. Great band!!! Seeker and Sister Disco kick major ass along with Magic Bus and the rest of their classics
I first heard him with the Yardbirds(and they were good),then with LED Zepplin. At the time, there was very little information on the music like today.Only the name of composers.First time I heard LZ,was in Florida, and liked the group.Beatles, stones etc,I heard in school,in England.LZ is one of my favorites, unfortunately all things must PASS!
Theres music that literally sounds heavy, like the construction of the song, chords, drums, bass, etc. all comes together "heavy", but in the case of Zeppelin, its a case of really a lot the ideas are very heavy in terms of how they come across. Its fascinating for sure.
Who is this girl? So smart questioning and input Almost cry when she said she wish to go back to the time she hear led.for the first time i m 60 and have the same wish It was a mystical experience
It's a shame the bit where Louise asks Jimmy about bands since Zep has been edited. I totally got when she says "But it's NOT the same"!!!! Jimmy smiles. Louise is right though - nothing since has been the same or even on equal ground. I love his 'It's a pleasure" at the end - cheeky monkey.
I'm 65 and grew up with Led Zepplin... still play those albums "all the time," nothing in the music scene comes close to Zep's tone and style of playing! Zzzzzeeeeppppppplllllllliiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnn!!!
It used to bug me how much JP bragged on his band. Even though I was hooked from the opening chords of Good Times Bad Times. Now I don't care. Miles Davis created some kind of Gold Standard, as did the Beatles, Steely Dan, and last but not least, Led Zeppelin [name courtesy of Keith Moon.]
Love Jim but his coke reflex is soooooooo powerful god damn. I heard he' do so much blow he'd stay up for 2 weeks straight! The magic was in the counterpoint though. Look at black dog, the way the drums are ever so slightly behind the guitar. That's skill, to envision the place in time where they meet and surf on it like that. And it's curious to the ear, it piques our interest as listeners. It is pure genius.
