That was great. I love Jimmy Raney, he is a real unsung hero of bop guitar. His lines still sound fresh today.

Thank you for your video. Jimmy was my grandmother's first cousin. I heard about him when growing up. His youngest son is my age.

Great seminar. I was lucky enough to see Jimmy Raney with Jack Wilkins and a bass player at a small club in New York City many years ago. It was a wonderful evening!! What a duo!!

Great lesson! Can you make a lesson about swing rhythm and how you make your playing more dynamic? Obviously you are not picking each note with same volume/ pressure. But I can't seem to figure out how you are making your lines sound uneven / syncopated. Please advise on your picking technique, accenting and swing rhythm. Thanks.

Thanks for your question and possibly in the future I might make that video. For now, I would say to try and bring out top notes of a phrase by picking the other notes lighter. Picking light and then picking a bit harder on accented notes will help (but not to hard where you are loosing tone).

Rene Thomas was great, how about Dick Garcia and Billy Bean, two more fine players.

@davidsheriff9274 Billy Bean was amazing!! Those informal sessions with Pisano blowing on tunes.... no one else had that fluid articulation at that time.

Thank you for this video, I' m from Italy , I do not write well english. I would like to ask a thing that I have seen in a musical score Abersol of Mr.Raney. I hope you will bw so kind to answer. In the song Nowhere he write In notations the indications about the solo : USE CHORDS ON 2ND CHORUS FOR SOLOING I don't understand if for chorus He intended to play oon the second octave of the guitar ,or to play on the melodic line of the chords more large?

Love the sound. What amp are you playing this lesson through? Are you adding any effects?
@NathanBortonMusic
@NathanBortonMusic 7 месяцев назад
Hi Dave thanks for your question! Actually no amp, just straight DI! I'm going into a pre-amp though (golden-age mkiii). I'm also running it though a compressor (golden-age comp 2A) and then have a small reverb unit in my signal chain so it doesn't sound so dry.

Great lesson! Many thanks. Have you ever heard of Sonny Greenwich? He has some interesting lines and concepts that would be fun to explore :-) Anything about Ed Bickert chord voicings would also be awesome. :-)

Are you Canadian, by chance ;) Sonny is quite the guitarist! Did he ever play with Oscar Peterson or Ed Bickert?
