Hello everyone! Welcome to my channel! I am a Jazz guitarist and educator. I post lesson videos, transcriptions, and live performance videos! I hope you enjoy and please subscribe and follow for great quality content! Website: nathanborton.com
Greetings Nathan thanks for sharing great video is very informative. Would like to see more about enclosures. Can you send a link or title for review. Also, I would very much like to see 4 and 5 note enclosure tutorial. Thanks again for sharing awesome video.
Just so I'm clear, is every downstroke a rest stroke even when not changing strings like the chromatic notes you did on the B strings? Obviously no rest notes for the E string chromatic line.
I have been looking into this for a while now and this video turned on the lights for me. There are many discussions and videos on Pat Martino’s “magic chord” including his own video’s. I understood the symmetry part but not the application of the four dominant chords of the parent diminished sounding great over any one of the four.💡 I just ordered Pat Martino’s book “Linear Expressions” and it should be a lot easier now that I get the theory. Onto putting it into practice. Thanks! You brought it down to earth for me! The art of a real teacher. Pat Martino Demystified!
So happy to hear this! Glad this video helped you out. Also make sure to check out the augmented family portion of the video. When you combine both together you can get some great stuff!
Love the video.. and thanks for the in depth explanations. Been steering away from rhythm changes for years and have finally decided to tackle it head on!!..One constructive critique, I find the background music you're using while talking very distracting and contradictory to the rhythm changes at hand.. i keep thinking I have another window open by mistake. :).. nevertheless, well done and thank you
Thanks for your comment! Appreciate your kind words and I hope this video helps you! I would encourage you to check out my video on Louis Smith's concepts as many of them are over rhythm changes! As for background music, yes... looking back it was not good to have. In my new videos the production has greatly increased and their is a focus on the material rather than vibe. Thanks! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cDiuEghO164.html
My next upcoming video will deal with Wes! For now I have done another "piecing language together" video using Pat Martino's line: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w9pPW94Mbm4.html
Pat Martino taught this as Parental Forms. In the same way, Augmented triads produce "related" major and minor triads by lowering and raising each note.
Yes! This method just leaves out the augmented part of it honestly. I actually did a video on pats method: Transform Your Playing: Pat Martino’s Quantum Guitar Method ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O_bpp41biPg.html
Thanks so much! And yes I do hold my pick that way. I can still get a downward pick slant but it’s just more comfortable for me. I’m using the CFG zero gravity guitar strap!
I feel like I'm already doing this naturally, but I like how you turned it into a systematic concept with specific exercises. Definitely going to practice this.
This is a great video! Concepts I understood, but how you explain them is a great reinforcement. I'd love exercises and licks to add to my "library" for this.
Hey thanks so much! I'm also striving for clarity in my teaching, so I'm glad that is coming through. Make sure to check out the etude at the end for more exercises with this concept!
I love your lessons . In this lesson I didn’t understand how if I have G B D F for G7 why in the first example did you play a D# ? In the second example you have Bb? Etc …
This is because I am using the altered tones of the dominant chord for the line closers. The first half of the lesson I cover line closers off the normal chord tones of G7, then the second half I talk about the ones off the altered tones being b9 (Ab) #9 (Bb) b5 (Db) #5 (D#). Hope that helps! I personally enjoy the altered one as it creates more of a pull to the one chord than the normal ones, but sound more tense
"you should know this" You got it ! people love to be told what they Should know, what they should do and all the ... thou should Dos As a jazz guy is that the best line you can muster ? really ?
It’s a phrase that I use on some video thumbnails to draw in viewers. It’s simply a marketing tool. It’s worked very well on pervious videos, so I kept using it. As someone who is actually trying on RU-vid marketing is key. I’m always looking for better ways to package the videos Because I believe my content is worth it. Sorry the thumbnail offend you… but I’d encourage to watch what this video has to offer! Triads are such a useful tool!
Thanks Steve! I know you have been follow the channel for awhile, and I really do appreciate your support. Glad that I can help you on your musical journey!
this one video just elucidated what I've been trying to learn for 10 years lmao. if you made a jazz guitar 101 fundamentals course (similar to Jens Larsen's one) I would buy immediately haha
Nathan ,I love your playing. Your lessons are full of important info. Can you tell me what Amp are you using? You get a great sound from that beautiful Benedetto guitar. Warm, crisp, punchy. Very clear notes on the 5th and 6th strings. Great lessons. Please keep them coming. You have a lot of really good things to say.!! It is greatly appreciated. By the way, Wes was my first Jazz Guitar hero back in the 60's. I think Wes was one the Greatest Jazz Guitarist that ever lived. Thanks.!!
Hi Danny, thanks for your kind words! I acually don't use an amp but rather a pre-amp that goes straight into my DAW via DI. I use the golden age mkiii! I have a link in the video description if your interested in purchasing one!
