James Maitland Stewart (May 20, 1908 - July 2, 1997), also known as Jimmy Stewart (although he seldom used that name in formal credits), was an American actor and military officer, known for his distinctive drawl and down-to-earth persona. A major Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer contract player, Stewart starred in many films that are considered to be classics, and is known for portraying American middle-class men struggling in crisis.
Stewart was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one in competition for The Philadelphia Story (1940) and receiving an Academy Lifetime Achievement award in 1985. He also had a noted military career and was a World War II and Vietnam War veteran, who rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Air Force Reserve, becoming the highest-ranking actor in military history. en.wikipedia.o...
Winning Your Wings is a 1942 Allied propaganda film of World War II produced by Warner Bros. Studios for the US Army Air Forces, starring Jimmy Stewart. It was aimed at young men who were thinking about joining the Air Force. Members of the production crew would later form the core of the First Motion Picture Unit.

Jimmy Stewart was piloting the lead B24 in the formation as his pilots flew into Germany on a very dangerous mission. Jimmy Stewart was a brave man--a true hero! Kudos to him!

Many people don't know that Jimmy Enlisted before the U.S. entered the war. It is pretty significant that he won an academy award and could write his own ticket to fame and money just before he enlisted. He was not just a bomber pilot he commanded an entire wing pretty high ranking and which means he led an entire wing into battle.

My uncle, 2LT John D. West Jr, was a copilot on a B-24 bomber. He was killed in a plane crash in Sicily. I was just a little boy, but the last time I saw him, smiling at me in Gulfport MS, is still etched n my memory. DR JOHN E RUSSELL CHAPLAIN (COL) USA RETIRED VIETNAM 1969

Jimmy was stationed for a time at Moffett Field, Sunnyvale, California. One day he decided to go to the movies, in uniform, to see his friend Henry Fonda in "The Lady Eve" at a theater in Santa Clara. My Mom, age 11 and her friend happened to be sitting next to him. At first Mom was staring and thought, "Gee that guy looks like Jimmy Stewart" and Jimmy actually spoke to her...he said "little girl, would you mind not chewing your gum so loud, please?", but she didn't find out it was really him until the movie let out and there was a buzz that Jimmy had indeed been in the theater.

Brigadier General James Stewart is the highest-ranking military officer in Hollywood history.

Roger Smith Safe to say he will hold that distinction....million to one that any actor in the future will do what Jimmy did. For that matter, America will never again field a fighting military such as it did in WW2.

Although, technically, Ronald Reagan holds that title as Commander in Chief...but his highest rank was Major when he was in the Army. To me it will always be Brigadier General James Stewart....my absolute favorite actor ever...an amazing and wonderful human being.

How about John Ford? He was an Admiral in the USN.

I always loved James STEWART as an actor, so I didn't know he was bomber pilot. Congratulations, I love him more and thank him for his bravery. Respect and admiration.

From what I've read,he had a habit of going out on difficult, dangerous missions, and was very well respected by those who served with him, there were other Hollywood people serving as well, including a gunner named Clark Gable.

Before the USAAF Stewart earned a degree in architecture from Princeton Univ. He also liked acting in a campus organization. What a life and what a background.

You can tell this film was made almost immediately after Pearl Harbor. The B17's are without the extra guns, especially the tail guns. Also the markings are still prewar with the large stripes on the tail fin and the red dot in the center of the star. It shows a certain amount of ignorance on the part of the planners to think a bomber could survive without a tail gun. RIP James Stewart. You were a credit to your country.

yes the b 17s are early version D models, with coffin belly gun port, no tail gun. many revisions were to follow.

Notice that all enlistees in the Army air force graduated from boot camp with the same rank of corporal before going on to officers training school, and if they qualified; pilots school. Jimmy was already a qualified private pilot and had graduated from Princeton college before enlisting. The AAF originally wanted him as an instructor, but he insisted on active service.

Another man, Arthur Godfrey, whose voice we heard during the funeral procession of John F Kennedy, also was an aviator. Remember Arthur?

I look at this and can only pray for this nation if we need real fighting men again, makes me miss my late teenage years, you know you could retire at 37 if you go in at 17 just think i could have retired almost 30 yrs ago.

Here's some interesting trivia for you ! General Stewart was already a pilot when he entered the service and had to Gain Weight to satisfy the requirements of the induction board. Those B-17A's were a sight. They had to re-think and re-design a few things to make them 'combat compatible', my Uncle told me, especially the tail section !
