Jimmy was much more than a great actor - my gosh, he risked his life for this country, flying so many bombing missions - which he didn't HAVE to sign up for. His dignity and class - he was one of the last of a very rare breed!

One of the great stories of Stewart's day was his friendship with Henry Fonda. Absolute best friends yet one a conservative and the other a liberal. When asked how with such different values they could get along, Jimmy said "There's some things we just don't talk about. There's so much more we can talk about". We could use that respect these days.

As I watched this episode with Johnny and General Stewart, I was thinking how much he reminded me of my neighbor, who is in his mid-eighties and still farms about 900 acres with one of his sons. Jimmy Stewart comes across as a man entirely at home with himself and I felt I could just stand at the fence and talk with him about nearly anything. That kind of person is so hard to find these days, anywhere, let alone Hollywood.

I saw a documentary on Jimmy Stuart. It mentioned his last bombing mission and how it affected him. He paid a price during his service as did all WWII vets. Showed his picture upon entering service and at discharge. He aged quite a bit hair was thin. His family was shocked at his appearance. It's a wonderful life was his first movie after his service. It said he drew on his war experience to do that anger scheme at his kids in that movie. That was what made it so believable.

He helped finance Thunderbird field in AZ where my dad was stationed and learned to fly the Stearman PT-17, eventually piloted a B-17, 21 years old. Stewart was a very humble guy, did't talk much about his service to our country. He was a great actor, but a far greater Patriot. God Bless him. I'm British & admired Jimmy Stewart - an unassuming hero, a real gentleman & a fine actor. WHAT a contrast to today's vulgar Hollywood elites who have sacrificed patriotism, manners & moral decency on the altar of mindlessly excessive "PC", self-exhibitionism & militant Leftism. We will not see his like again. Pure class! Also, today's Late Night hosts & the likes of the Young Turks are unfit to lick Johnny Carson's shoes for the same reasons. He & Jimmy Stewart exemplifed why their generation was so special. Their higher standards are sorely missed by many on both sides of the Atlantic no matter what the Left would have you believe.

Not only a famous actor, but an actor in some of the most famous movies of all time! Two of those movies have been on the ‘Best Movie Ever Made Lists! The first one, ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ and my favorite movie of all time, ‘Vertigo’! An actor who didn’t safely stay in Hollywood, during WW 2 making ‘Buy Bonds’ commercials, but fought in WW 2, not just as a soldier but as a pilot, and recognized as an Air Force Hero! And then... A Brigadier General as well! He was in real life, everything that a normal world class actor would kill to play, and... was also in real life what every world class hero secretly dreamed they could do! Actor, musician, husband, father, an American citizen who didn’t shirk from his duty, soldier, war hero, pilot, officer, and not just a WW 2 heroic officer/pilot, but a Brigadier General to boot!!! He accomplished in one life time, what would have taken 10 famously extraordinary men to do!!! And in the end, his greatest accomplishment... Humility!!! Thanx, Jimmy, RIP...

He was a bomber wing commander WWII, B24s. I know a Veteran who was a bombardier under his command, he told us that the wing commander usually didn't fly the missions but Jimmy Stewart flew with them sometimes. I asked how he picked the missions to fly, he told me that he flew the hard ones...when they were unlikely to return. I've never Jimmy Stewart brag about his role in the war, typical of the greatest generation.

machia0705 - He had good traits, and his bad traits, just the same as anyone else. Not to diminish anything that he accomplished in his life, but movie stars are really just like anybody else, in that they have the same fears and worries that we all do. They have to make a living, they have to be able to put food on the table, they have to be able to pay their bills on time, they have to think about getting older and what that means for them, they have to think about their children; if they have any, and think about how they can ensure that their children will have the best future possible after they're gone, and etc. And they're subject to the same kinds of temptations that everyone else faces. The only thing that's really different about them, is the glory that is attached to what they do for a living, and the amount of money that they make in doing it.
