With the UK Championship due later this month, here are a couple of pretty good frames from this 1986 match.I don't have any more from this match unfortunately. Foulds won this high quality affair 9-7.

This was by far Foulds best season and shot up the rankings after his season to World No 3

Neil was always a class act. This was a masterclass of break building and position.. Awesome stuff.

The Preston Guild Hall - home to many classic snooker matches. Sadly the roof was also home to Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC), which is why the place will stay closed until at least Summer 2024.

I went there in 1986 for the Embassy World qualifiers, saw Big Bill play Barry West

@@digeme69 Only qualifiers I went to was 1985. My father and I ended up watching Mark Wildman v Ray Edmonds. Wildman waved at us, as we were the only spectators. At the next table down was Geoff Foulds v Joe Johnson. Who'd'a thought it next year?

There weren't many people watching Bill v West either, but I was a fan of Bills and saw him play many times. Funnily enough in 1985 Joe Johnson qualified for Sheffield after beating Foulds, and played Big Bill in the 1st round (I went to the first session). Bill knocked in the high break of the tournament (143) and Johnson never made a break over 50 in the match. Bill led 8-4 but fell over the line in the end winning 10-8.The following season (in late February) I travelled to The Assembly Rooms Derby to see Bill play Johnson again in the last 32 of the British Open, and Bill beat him again 5-3. 3 months after this match Joe Johnson won the World Championships. People within the snooker fraternity knew that Johnson was a good player but after seeing the two matches v Bill, there would've been every reason to say that Bill had more chance of winning the Worlds than Joe.@@matthewlawrenson3628
