Fun fact : The actress who played the older lady who was killed by Maestro after playing music was June Hudson, who was the Costume Designer in the last few years of Tom Baker's era, and designed his " maroon look" in season 18.

Jinkx gave the most interesting delivery possible for every line, never making the easy or most obvious choice. The most delicious mix of camp & scary.

Genius who found the chord? Son of the man who composed music for Dr Who 1982-85 eight episodes, the senior who remembered her music? Costume designer Dr WHO 78-81 32 episodes.

"Me. I'm them." "You're who?" "No, that's the Doctor." "Doctor who?"

I loved the mix of diegetic and non-diegetic music in this. Ruby playing her own theme on the piano for one gave me chills

I LOVED the sonic being used like that because it literally vibrates atoms at a distance cancelling out waves is a really real world thing it could do out of all the things we see it do.

Also fun fact - the lil old lady in this episode is June Hudson who was the costume designer for Doctor Who in the 1970/80’s for Tom Baker’s doctor and his companions etc

I adore this one. Maestro’s an instant classic villain, and I feel like anyone who doesn’t Hate Fun is gonna look back on this one fondly for years to come.

There’s a big reference to Pyramids of Mars from Classic Who in this episode. The Doctor takes Sarah to show her an alternative future upon her insistence that she knows the world doesn’t end in 1911. I think this may be more than a coincidence. Maybe.

O.K but I love that the after-effects of defeating a reality-warping villain got established in the Giggle so now a musical number at the end of an episode actually makes in-universe sense 😅 I haven't watched an episode this fun in ages!

A lot of guest performers chew the scenery, but it's rare for one to chew the musical score! ❤❤❤

Not really a spoiler...But there seems to be someone who has been in every episode since WILD BLUE YONDER. Lurking in the background, delivering one line here and there. But its been the same actress every episode. I find that interesting...

Maestro would've been a good villain for Capaldi to face. Let him put that guitar to good use.

Once again, George and Ringo get short shrift in a show with the Beatles.

The behind-the-scenes things I find often more surprising. Like learning the genius composer at the start is the son of Radiophonic Workshop composer Roger Limb - whose edgy incidental music accompanied Classic Who stories like 'Caves of Androzani' and 'Revelation of the Daleks'. Just in case you thought Jinkx playing the bassnotes was the only meta moment.

Cilla is Cilla Black, a popular singer in the 60s and 70s, and like the Beatles, hails from Liverpool.

I'm glad and impressed you know who Cilla is/was! I wondered how much of the international audience would have ever heard of her, especially as she's only briefly mentioned in this episode without really going into her biography. I'm not a Cilla superfan or anything but it's nice that you were able to get that reference.

I prided myself on recognizing the billboard advertising the original name of John Smith & The Common Men, but it's taken until today for me to realise that Maestro is literally 'playing' the Tardis using a key on a piano. It was Eurovision night and drinks were consumed.

As someone who hated and was really dissapointed in this series first episode, I really loved The Devil's Chord. This series NEEDS more slower moments however.

Also added to cameo central: the two people dancing in the corridor with Tardis Team - Johannes Radebe (Dancer) & Shirley Ballas (Judge) of Strictly Come Dancing. Shirley was the choreographer who did the "I'm still standing" video for Elton John.

I read a comment on another video and had to share its contents... there's a quote by someone called Jean-Michel Basquiat, "Art is how we decorate space, but music is how we decorate time"... seems very apt not only for this episode, but for the conversation afterwards too.

Kat is one of the Toymaker's Legions; who uses the power of reality to steal fantasy and wonder from the world. Paula is the first victim; all cheerful and happy about the dance number and whimsical nature of Doctor Who; only for Kat aka Reality Check to say " There are only Eight Episodes of Doctor Who this Season." And gleefully watch as the wonder exits Paula.

A cool detail- Ruby plays her own theme. She ‘wrote’ and plays it while she’s the only music left except maestro themself.

I never get tired of watching Maestro kick off the opening tune...

Mrs Mills was a super famous sing-a-long pub style piano player. Her LP records were a must for family parties. She was one of EMIs biggest stars. Her specially tuned piano was at Abby Road studios and used on many 60s pop records, by many groups including the Beatles.

The worst people are gonna hammer the show for that song and dance routine- purely so the fighting over it fuels their engagement. Meanwhile RTD is like "don't say I didn’t warn you." I just get the feeling that scene is more important than we think.

This episode was SO FANTASTIC!

Susan Twist is the woman that sold the Doctor and Ruby tea......Susan Twist is part of RTD's mystery box this season....she played the woman with Isaac Newton when the Doctor and Donna changed Gravity to Mavity at the beginning of "Wild Blue Yonder"

I feel like music, art and storytelling are going to be themes for this series, and I think that's wonderful and a great way to give this season it's own identity

That episode was 100000 times better than the first episode. I don't mind having an episode miss, you can't please everyone all the time and all that. What stood out was what I call the 'sinister silly' aspect of this, where things were unhinged and seemed silly, but was very dark. I confess, I'm super stoked to see what Moffett does. Moffett and RTD working together as a team always felt like peak Who (I really wish we could have had a few episodes written by RTD while Moffett was showrunner). Great fun watching your reactions, I had to wait until I could watch it with a friend before I could watch your reaction.

Wish I had the internet when I was your age to review Doctor Who. It just makes it more fun to watch when you can share the viewing.

I thought this was a middle of the range Who plot elevated to greatness by the astonishing cast.

There's always a Twist at the end! LOVED this episode. Fun, fun fun. The callbacks by the Doctor were imho, pitched perfectly. Ideal for someone new to the series and nostalgic for the rest of us. Also liked the scene where they went to the Maestro's future version of Earth. Reminded me very much of a scene from a 1975 story with The 4th Doctor and Sarah Jane. So looking forward to the rest of this series and watching you guys react to it,😁👍❤

The one who waits is called Chris, his name has been in huge letters throughout the episode. Or it just could be coincidence. Something to think about.

The older lady in this episode was a costume designer for doctor who in the 70s.

Meatro's circus outfit at the end is a marching band uniform reminescent of "The Beetles Sargent Pepper's Club Band' album....the 4 Beetles wore different colored marching band uniforms

I feel like there is something important in how Maestro knows they have an audience and is performing for that audience, is summoned by music but wants to destroy it, demands attention but ultimately wants solitude. Maybe everything set in motion when The Doctor invoked magic at the edge of the universe has more of an idea of their place in the narrative as characters. Perhaps only characters from outside of the baseline universe can have that awareness, even fleetingly, and break the fourth wall? Hmm, wasn't there a timeless child from another universe found...

The Doctor doesn’t know the precise year or date when it happened, so he can’t go back to change before that guy played the chord.

This one definitely broke that 4th wall a bit, which probably irks me more than anything else. It was such a good episode though and my issue with that end musical number is Jinkx could have maybe made them do that routine mid episode and it would have made more sense. However maybe that musical number at the end will make sense by the end of the season. We'll see. It is likely to be a divisive episode, but even though it wasn't a fave of mine Jinkx' performance was outstanding in this. The season has started off quite well IMO.

I honestly don't recognize the song that Ruby's playing as her theme at 9:20 but WhoCulture says it is sooo. Although I'm not sure I've heard The Doctors theme as distinctly as at the end of The Giggle, either. I want it to be as prevalent as I am The Doctor and I want to work out where the piano run-down is, in the bar.

I loved Jinkx in this role! I never watched Drag Race and had no idea who they were. My sister doesn't watch Doctor Who but she loves Drag Race. So I asked if she was familiar with Jinkx. Turns out they were in the Seattle theater scene together and she totally knows them and Jinkx had to drop out of a play they were in together to do Drag Race. I thought that was a cool thing.

I'm not immune to a bit of improvisation whilst doing the chores - sometimes around the tune of Grace's rabbit! It's a way to start the day. Mr Toaster sings along.

Ruby's first TARDIS trip was during Christmas but now it's July and Ruby knows the Doctor long enough to call him out saying that he never gives up when he says he can't defeat Maestro. I wonder if future episodes address this because they visited Carla's flat and then skipped to what happened there afterwards?

Jinkx did not just chew the scenery in this but they ripped it apart, tore it into a full orchestra and played the greatest musical track you've ever heard

I watched this episode just last night. Was Jinx really belting those notes? Impressive! Love Ncuti and Millie! They have great chemestry together! And Millie is just gorgeous, in every way.

Ruby remembers because of the first episode. When she stepped on the butterfly the Doctor had a throw away line, that he had to turn on the 'butterfly circuit whatever its called' .. For me this was the explanation how companions can remember altered timelines. He said something like "new face new configurations (something along this line) thats why she became a lizard.. :D

I don't know if everyone will agree with me but i'm just gonna say it 😂Jinx for me is instantly one of my favourite villains in Doctor who easily top tier both camp and absolutley terrifying i'd easily put her top 5 amazing episode and amazing reaction guys as usual 😊

I enjoyed this episode - apart from the musical number ending. Nice nods to the past, and Maestro is a villain of the time - if they were on 60s Batman, they'd fit right in. Maestro's personality reminded me of the titular Queen of Time - a lost story from the 2nd Doctors era and sequel to The Celestial Toymaker. Big Finish adapted it and its worth a listen. You might find some familiar tropes...

I suspect the 4th wall breaks are more than a gimmick. The Pantheon can rewrite reality, and given that the two we’ve met so far - The Toymaker and The Maestro - are tied directly to the concepts of artifice & performance, I suspect that The Doctor & Ruby are trapped in a kind of cosmic Truman Show. It may even turn out that Ruby isn’t “real,” but just a character made up by the big bad (The One Who Waits) for this cosmic production. Also, The One Who Waits is Susan. And The Doctor is an orphan from The Pantheon. Just my guesses.

I will say this for RTD - pretty much every Who episode he's had a hand in, there's (just about always) a memorable concept, character and/or villain, unlike some showrunners where I'm looking at their series and can barely remember what happened in half their stories. Space Babies was a very weird concept, but I actually quite enjoyed it (despite me really not liking the episode it reminded me of, the one featuring the Adipose), and I'll definitely remember it in Doctor Who's history. Same for this one - I'll remember it for Maestro and some excellent musical nods, and gloss over the musical number at the end. I just presumed they'd finished editing and realised they were a few minutes short at the end of the episode. Next time they're short, they could do a filler like 'The Adventures of Ned Flanders', except it'd be, oh let's say, 'The Adventures of Cherry Sunday'.

This was so much better than the first one . I thought Jinks was terrific as the Maestro . As Kat& Paula pointed out the Beatles were good enough for their part in the story , shame about Cilla . There were more hints and pointers to the rest of the series and it was a much better story . Ncuti and Millie were more like the Christmas special , in Space Babies I felt they were a bit flat . Finally 1963 was never this colourful and the end dancing was pure Disney , a pity they couldn't have used a song the Beatles actually did . I always enjoy the gals reactions and it's nicer when I agree .

I know RTD said Tennant wouldnt come back... But 15 said that he split his soul in half with the bi-generation.. What if 'the one who waits' is the Valeyard played by David Tennant.. I cant really think of who else 'the one who waits' could be apart from maybe Omega? A new character wouldn't really work imo with they way they've built whoever they are up

Once again, I agree with Paula , and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the musical notes didn't look quite right. I liked 90% of the rest of the episode, the Maestro was great, loved the 'silence' scene.and the mention of Totter's Lane and Susan was very well done. If I was a bigger Beatles fan I might have been annoyed at how little they were actually in it, but I'm glad it wasn't just a Beatles tribute disguised as a Who episode, that would have been too much. There's only two other things I didn't like. The first is minor - I thought they overused the fourth wall break a little. I can forgive Maestro doing it because they're an all powerful being who can manipulate reality,, but the Doctor? And then the end musical number... I would have been fine if, like everywhere else in the episode, it had been used to somehow further or wrap up the plot, but the plot was done. This was a meaningless song and dance number because RTD wanted it in there, nothing more. It stretched the episode for seemingly no reason. I'm fine with DW being more musical, but give it some purpose.Overall though, a big improvement on episode 1 and talking babies.

I'm beginning to suspect that RTD's choice of the 'Christmas music' for Ruby's foundling origin story is another political message. In the west we know it as The Carol of the Bells, with English lyric written in 1936. But the tune is a the Ukrainian new year folk song 'Shchedryk' wtitten in 1914. I think the choice of music, and the power of it implied in this episode, is Russell declaring his support for Ukraine.
