I feel your pain for not knowing the name of something you clearly remember. I remember this one sprite comic where there's a red and blue guy going on adventures with Link and Zelda and a green slime girl. I remember that the antagonist was a green dragon, and that flash animation was used to showcase the fusion between the green slime girl and the red slime girl that was supposedly her rival. Does anyone remember anything like that?
Oh man, Traveler's Tales. Wrath of Cortex was my absolutely favorite sans the hilarious PS2 loading times. I want to say I've tried Jinx before. My childhood local library had a section with games and a Playstation, and it was always the weirdest stuff I'd find in it. Like Running Wild of all things.
The loading-times were improved in the "Platinum" or "Greatest Hits" versions. They still don't match the Xbox load-times, but they're about half the time of the original releases
When you mention the fact of playing a game as a kid, not knowing the name of it when you're older even tho you remember playing it, is exactly how I felt about Klonoa.
Back in the early 2000's, I was at a McDonald's in London somewhere and I got a Demo Disc which had a playable demo of this game, then years later I tried remembering it and couldn't. Then I remembered it was something like "Jynx" except I kept spelling it wrong so it nothing would show up. lol Fun little game, I'd say. Also, I read somewhere on the internet that a PS2 version was planned, but canceled for some reason. And it's odd they didn't release it in the U.S./Canada.
25:00 Hmm... foreshadowing? ;) In terms of other games where you can visually remember what it looks like but can't remember name wise is Space Station Silicon Valley on the N64. Then it got ported to the PS1 being renamed to Evo's Space Adventure, though it was butcherd so badly. They fixed the item glitch there I guess?
I was looking for this game since the last time I played it in 2009. I really thought it was pandominum but no it was jinx. and my god my story is simular to you. not a lot of people talk about it so thank you for this video, may it helps people who's looking for this game.
"40 Winks" is the closest game I'd say this feels like for me... though in terms of repetitive gameplay (constantly find key, open door, defeat enemies, repeat) then I'd say 20th Anniversary Pac-Man World is similar. All you do there is find a nearby fruit to open a door.
The soundtrack is what I remember the most of this game because it sounds like the Stuart Little 2 PS1 soundtrack... and Treasure Planet PS1 soundtrack lmao
Seeing that brief segment of Jinx running towards the screen just made me remember a lot of this game, I still like it but it is very meh in comparison to the better games of the era, still, it's nice to see you finally talk about it :D
I got my mom to rent Jinx at a video store at a super young age. Didn't get far through but this video just unlocked a random memory, so cheers for that. :) Also cool to see you back!!
@@SteveOfWarr I'm not too sure really, as there's not much trivia from what I could find. If I had to guess it'd just be that because Sony Computer Entertainment Europe themselves published this, and maybe the America branch didn't think it'd be worth the cost? It's anyone's guess though really.
As an American, I definitely would not have been much help in helping you remember this game lol And hey, you could argue it was like Spyro in one other way...disappointing boss fights. Was that a trend on PS1 platformers or am I just nostalgia-blinded by some of the better Crash bosses? Either way, awesome video, dude! A fun look at a 3D platformer I've never heard of until now!
I like to do silly things like that with my choice of background music in the hope that someone like yourself notices, and leaves a comment 😀 Thanks for watching and listening closely!
Nice Video, makes me want to dive into some old magazines or my collection of games and see what kind of obscure games I actually have (or just... actually play some of them?)
I'm glad you checked out the video then! Several people have said the same so it's nice knowing I've managed to show people something they'd not seen before!
Probably because it was only released in PAL countries (Europe, mostly) so many have never heard of it. Mickey's Wild Adventure, Agent Armstrong, Cheesy, Tintin and the Hugo games are some other platformers only released in PAL areas too
The whole d-pad vs analog speed thing makes me wonder if they set up the stick's deadzones incorrectly. Did you happen to try it with more than the one controller, out of interest?
@@DoctorInk20 Effectively the amount the stick needs to move from the centre before it's read as an input. The larger the deadzone, the more you have to move it before anything happens.
Look on RU-vid for "An In-Depth Look At Tombi / Tomba" by user BlueKunai. He's done a 2 hour, 35 min video on the first game, and a 4 hour, 33 min one on the second!
Or you could be thinking of "Alfred Chicken", if it was a 2D game. It was exclusive to PAL countries, like Europe, on PlayStation, but was on Gameboy and Gameboy Colour in other areas
World of Warcraft players are so bad that they download mods that tells you how to play each boss fight. I think part of the fun of boss fights is figuring out how to beat them.
Like I say in the video, if you didn't know much about this game, at face value I'd say it's understandable to mix them up... Both tick kinda similar boxes!
@@Petronious yeah but what I ment was you should have a older pac man game review ready for the day it comes out... you know for the views and you all ready a 3d platformer guy... it just a suggestion, I’ll more likely watch your game reviews no matter what because your a 3d platformer guy
"Muppet Monster Adventure" is a better copy of Spyro than this. Also... who plays as Fargus in the first Pandemonium? His roll attack barely works and he can't double-jump... at-least in the sequel his roll is more-reliable and you can throw Sid. But, come on, Nikki's double-jump is just too useful.
@@Petronious I'd suggest you go for Klonoa instead if you really wanted a "2.5D" PS1 era game... the only aim in Pandemonium is to get to the end of each level, there's not much to it. Or if you wanted something purely 2D, try the two Oddworld games
The game gives me this was pretty much finished sooner but couldn’t release it till 2003 vibe. Despite that, I’ve got such a thing for PS1 era platformers that have this colorful pink/purplish hues. I wonder how it would’ve been received if it released a few years prior. But man, Jinx is such a generic looking hero. He couldn’t have just been braver, but he definitely could’ve benefitted from a redesign. Jankness aside, kinda want to pick it up. Doubt it’ll work on my NTSC PS1/PS2. Thanks for reviewing this one Pete, would’ve never known about it had you not covered it to be honest.
It's funny how we all have these bits of media from childhood that we visually remember in detail, but the names elude us for ages. I had many of these before I had decent Internet to do research. Cartoon shows, mostly. Some I'm still having trouble finding today. Looking at _Jinx,_ it feels like a "proof of concept" or an alpha build for _a better game._ There's so much to build on - like something one would use as a basis for a wacky platformer, but lacks any real meat. Nice aesthetics, mind.
An early 2000s Europe-only PS1 game? Yup, know fuck all about this game here in the States. Sounds like we didn't miss much either. Good to know obscure little games like these exist.
Never heard of this game before, so I really enjoyed hearing about it! Makes you wonder about other PS1 games that were forgotten due to a late release date (but hopefully they don’t also end with patricide). 😬
I HAD THIS GAME!!! My god!!! My cousin brought this for me and I remember us enjoying it too! I need to find another copy of it as I think I lost mine?... Who knows?! Awesome video & nice to see you back!
Well, the main character does, and then only how the jester (Fargus) looked in the first Pandemonium! He had a yellow and white outfit in Pandemonium 2
