JJ Redick and Jayson Tatum both tell some of their favorite Duke and Mike Krzyzewski ( Coach K ) stories. Subscribe to The Old Man and The Three podcast w/ JJ Redick (ESPN) and Tommy Alter on RU-vid channel today.
A full on player podcast discussing the game of basketball needs to get more attention from NBA fans worldwide. Fantastic episode once again. At least something different and more insightful than all the media dramas specifically ESPN.
It has to be the right players with the right personalities though. So many ex players are unbelievably boring, can’t talk the sport and be engaging. Jj is well spoken, has good timing, and a lot of insight as well. Rare to find. This doesn’t work for most players
You do need some media to play devils advocate because players are going to ask the questions not exposing the dirt or lockeroom business. I think whatever you feel like listening to that day is up to you. You gotta have the tough questions
Idk if you can make that judgement on a formal podcast because we don’t know him behind closed doors. But he does seem introspective which allows him to grow as a person
I don’t think that was the point lol I mean just as life aspect you typically don’t think and act the same way you did from 16-23 those are crucial years. Especially since he’s a father too I believe
I am so happy you are doing these interviews! JJ you are definitely a favorite of mine! Please keep sharing!! It will definitely keep the Coach K Era alive! Thank You All for your time and effort doing these interviews.
You were my idol growing up, wore 4 for all my teams because of you. So happy to see the man and father you’ve grown into, and the perspective you’ve gotten about your time at Duke.
I went to a Duke practice my senior year of high school with my team. 2004. A bunch of high school teams were there to watch. JJ was there. Daniel Ewing, Shavlik Randolph, Luol Deng. JJ was dunking with ease. I was surprised to see/find out that Coach K cursed.
That was my experience when I went to Duke basketball camp. Opened my eyes to what good actually was. Went around 2004 as well then 2009. And also all the old heads could flat ball. Collin’s, Dawkins, etc. Sean dockery was the quickest person side to side I’ve ever seen. How JJ reddick came off screens and could get squared in the air. Just a totally different world. One of the best experiences of my life. The stories you get to hear etc.
It's because he's created a public persona that doesn't actually jive with who he is. And it seems his players love him but he acts publicly like he's above it all when he's really not. I'd have a lot more respect for him if he just owned who he is.
@@bballwarrior12 he never pretends he’s above it all. But there’s a difference between the locker room and the public. The players know exactly who he is when they get there. If his players admire him he’s doing something right. Winning isn’t always nice. Not saying you’re saying it is though
That tearing up the lockerroom thing Coach does is from his Westpoint days. I'm retired Navy. They love doing that in boot camp while y'all are gone for the day then come back exhausted and sweaty and everything else then you find all your stuff in a pile. Smh. Lol
What's wrong with that ? You're not supposed to grow being a professional athlete with high responsability for 4 years ? Or even without that, we're supposed to grow each year.
This is awesome, really gives a lot of credit to sports programs and their recruiting at the major Division 1 level. For adults to sit down and become convinced with teenagers to sign big contracts with Universities is amazing (wild). They are deserving of the fan base.
I don’t know why that makes me laugh so hard. I mean, I’ve seen Coach K go off, but THIS??? It’s the last sentence I’d expect to hear him say. Too good. 🤣🤣🤣
“I think coach K had back surgery in myyyy….. I think it was my freshman year” why is JT talking like he spent 4 years at Duke lmaooooo 💀💀💀💀💀 buddys ONLY season was his freshman season lmaooo
I really enjoy the real conversations you guys have. Can you have a discussion on what has happened to Duke basketball since the one and done years started? I really enjoyed watching Duke teams for the last 30 or so years and up until @5 years ago it seamed Duke had superior defense, a few dominant players with killer instinct like yourself and Tatum, even Zion, and looked fluid. Even the team with Zion was hard to watch and this year there seems to be a lack of motion, drive, and fluidity. Is it me or is that just the new generation of players? I absolutely loved watching you and Jason Williams, Battier, Brand, and many others dominate despite all the hate. Seems sad we don’t really see that at Duke these days, but they still are winning! What’s your take?
JJ I’m from Roanoke VA. I remebr watching you play at Cave Spring. I played against your brother in baseball. He hit a massive HR off me. Lol. Amazing how far you have went. Huge Duke fan all bc of u.
Tatum and JJ Reddick are probably one of the most mature players coming into the nba both are extremely wise and insightful that is beyond their years.
Dang, Tatum has the perspective of a 15-yr vet (classy dude). I'm a UVA guy but props to you Dukies! Keep up the good work JJ....and, I didn't forget you are from Virginia!
Hearing even a little of how tough Coach K is/was makes a lot of sense given how successful he is, but I t’s still in such contrast to how I’ve always imagined it.Tbh it makes me wonder what playing under Coach Knight was really like.
This is an interesting sports show. When there are shows speaking about current events or giving opinions about players/teams in a very censored way as not to offend anyone, the shows are boring. I would love to hear these uncensored stories directly from players that the press never covered.
Reminds me of my freshman year of highschool the varsity coach was coaching us and we lost a game we should've won so he got us in a circle and just started roasting us one by one lmao
My high school coach played for coach K in his first four years and is the same, if not WORSE than coach K. Some of the stuff he says is so out of pocket 😭
JJ, I'm 38 and went to Duke for 3 summers from 1997 -2000 as part of the TIP program in the summers.. were you in the dorms on East or West Campus? I was at Pegram, Alspaugh, & Bassett and those were amazing summers going to class and then playing ultimate. Cosmic cantina was the spot for amazing Mexican food!
I don't know whether it's the same now, but when I was a student there (similar time to JJ), the freshmen live on East Campus, and then everyone moves to Central or West Campus after that. Most of players tended to prefer the Central apartments when I was there.
@@carriedavis7949 Thanks for the info, I think you're right most of the student athletes probably want to live in the nicer student apartments. Some of those dorms just hold a special place in my heart, no AC but playing ultimate frisbee on the quad was epic. Duke actually had a very good meal plan as well so their campus food was better than most for the time 1996-2000.
This ESPNs chance to do their own version of “Open Court.” JJ, Perk, J-Will and Jalen Rose bring in guest hoopers each week. Maybe a sneaker segment with a player highlighting their favorite kicks to wear during games. Idk just a thought
Seeing how committed coach k had all of the players, maybe is a reason why Zion is having such a hard time focusing because the coaches in the nba are not as harsh as coach k on him
When I was in the Infantry we would go out on Thirsty Thursdays in Waikiki the run 5 miles at 530am lol. We ran miles everyday...maybe that would work well implemented in BBall practice. I'd imagine a guy that can run 10 miles at a 7.30-8.00 min pace would have np running all game
I grew up watching Alabama football because it’s like a pro sport here, but when I started trying to get into College Basketball Avery Johnson was making Alabama look awful aside from the season Colin Sexton was there so I gravitated towards Duke because a game in Cameron Indoor Vs an unranked non conference opponents had that pro feel that Alabama games have in college football.
