For people who never saw Shaq play, I’ll give you a perfect example. Remember when the Kawhi Raptors team built a wall and stopped Giannis? Ok. Now imagine Giannis actually bull dozing thru that wall and carrying all 3 defenders to the hoop and getting an and-1 every single possession… that was Prime Dominance from Shaq.

Except Shaq would foul out doing that. That's the real reason you don't see Giannis, Zion, etc doing it.
@phamawa
@phamawa 2 дня назад
Well, the difference also is that shaq still had a nice offensive game. That little baby hook and floater, especially after a hop step or drop step made it really tough, and he was decisive in the post and was a decent passer too. Giannis doesn't have that nack to the basket game or touch, especially back then! 2019 he was strictly driving yo the rack, so the wall worked.

Fouls are part of the game. You are allowed up to 6 (in Fiba 5) each game. Low frequency/occasional flagrant (to break a guy out of rhythm i.e.) is also part of the game (you are allowed up to 2) Unsportsmanship like fouls are NOT part of the game (target for injury, hate, retaliation, and other contents which are not basketball)
@KxngKUDA
@KxngKUDA 24 дня назад
@@user-jf9fd8pc6n I agree, but that's why I have an issue with a lot of older players trying to gatekeep. They make claims that certain players don't get the same respect because they couldn't play while they allowed barbaric behavior to cover egos and pride. It's literally like jail ball principles. Because you weren't a good enough defender, you now resort to assaulting and injuring players to boost your ego. THATS not basketball. And making "unsportsmanlike conduct" a part of your judgement criteria is disingenuous and asinine. Shaq is basically saying he won't respect many newer players going forward because the rules don't allow them to "touch each other up (in Shaq terms)" Even Shaq's entire MO when talking about talented guards is "back in my day I'd knock em out the air, and they'd think twice about coming in the paint" as if that's a great normal thing to do
@DaveJLamar
@DaveJLamar 23 дня назад
@@KxngKUDAyou could actually reverse it as well and say the guys who were “physical” back in the day wouldn’t be able to hang with the skill and talent that is today’s NBA. I haven’t played basketball in years because I’ve played against too many unskilled physical players that would just straight up hurt you if hit them will skill and they couldn’t hang. Lol Even on the topic of how “bad” the defense of the NBA is today, I argue that it’s not that the defense is bad but the offense is just so much more evolved and it’s much harder to stay in front of players today because of the level of skill. Guys like Kyrie will make anyone look like they suck on defense. Lol

Respect to JJ for understanding that it doesn't really matter when his 🏀 IQ is higher than the players that are objectively greater than himself. It shows when he doesn't want to offend great players when talking to them and they can't comprehend what he's saying. He doesn't pry or try to win arguments with them. He 100% knows he's probably forgotten more about basketball than Shaq could ever hope to know, but will still always defer to him along with all the other legends. JJ's respect and love for the game is so genuine, and that's why the game along with all its proponents will always love him back 💯

I don't know how you view the word dominant. But the only sense where the word really fits onto a Basketball player, is if someone, meaning the other Team or the defending player, has to Change their usual playstyle or stategy to mess with your game in order to keep the "dominant" player in check. Meaning, you need to change your regular game because someone forces you to do so. And therefore there are many ppl like Shaq, Prime Lebron, Jokic and so one who could be considered "dominant players"!

I would love to discuss this with Shaq bc I see him make this argument all the time. What Shaq speaks of is “Dominance” the continuation of being dominant. What JJ is describing is Dominant, where you can describe a singular performance as such. Shaq displayed Dominance throughout his career and he is recognized as the most dominant force in basketball. Dwight Howard at his peak in Orlando was a dominant player. It’s semantics but I believe it makes sense when you are clear in that fashion. Let’s talk Shaq! My uncle played At LSU the final four year and help recruit you. And I played under Ron Abernathy my brother, let’s go! Lol

And we know 3 is better than 2 but . Come on now the best look is always the better choice . So much that whatever team is guarding Shaq would have to double on him . Forcing Shaq to pass it to a most likely competent shooter . Shaq in today’s game would still be valuable .

Here’s something that is sad. Shaq is a 7’1 mvp with 4 rings and he is so uncomfortable in his own skin. I think this is because he knows the only person who stopped Shaq was himself he should’ve been the goat, but that doesn’t mean you have to discredit what guys are doing today. “Could they play with us” who cares? They make way more money today and score way more points so why would they want to play with you guys? That’s is the goal because the goal is to be an excellent player in the time that they’re playing.

Does Shaq have the ability to think dynamically? Tired of this only caring about physicality and clotheslines in the 80s. If thats all we care about the 40s-50s were the best eras, they were playing behind chain link fences in chuck taylors with racism. All eras of basketball are great in their own way. Respect todays game like you respect all the others, these playoffs have been great.

Shaqs speaking facts. The rule changes and nba is watering down the league. The league was better and more entertaining to watch, just was. NBA is promoting soft basketball, now all the players are complainers which lebron even identified in his new podcast. Shaqs right tho, and we all know it.

With racism…Listen to you. Bet you’d say there’s still racism in the NBA today too. Stop feeding into today’s fake racial problem. That’s all you’re doing. And yeah, I’m sure there was some racism back then, but at least black kids had a real family and the father stuck around and provided. Now it’s just mama. Mama’s a single mom with 4 kids and 4 different baby dads…if not more, all while collecting government assistance. Smh. I’m with Shaq and you need to man up. Check your plastic intake because I think it’s messing with your testosterone-it seems to be low.

Shaq would play Robinson and Ewing. He would have 36 points and 16 rebounds and 2 blocks. Robinson and Ewing would have 31 points 17 rebounds and 4 blocks and he “dominated” them. It’s ridiculous

"Real physicality" in Shaq's definitions is the type of physicality that get called flagrant fouls, which I think is nonsense. Physicality in basketball should be being able to defend or attack vigorously with body while not trying to punch each other in the face or being physical that is basically a flagrant foul. It's basketball not MMA. You win by getting the ball into the basket more than the opponent while also preventing the opponent from getting points, not by messing each other up. Also, let's be real, the old generation of NBA were only physical and more defensive in the paint and not in the perimeter or beyond the 3pt line, which in today's NBA, you see players getting doubled and tripled beyond the 3pt line.

Just like what JJ said, there's a clear distinction between fouling and actual gameplay. if being physical means fouling, especially flagrant fouls, the NBA players of today would exploit that physicality and just get free points by getting free throws. Fouling should not be the first thing that comes into mind by players when the term "physicality" comes in, since committing fouls just gives free points to the opponent. Imagine the best player on your team is "physical" in shaq's standards, and end up getting ejected, eventually causing the team to lose, is just bad.

I think the word Shaq is looking for isnt "Physical", its "Violent"... JJ is talking about physical play, Shaq is talking about getting hacked at and fouled. Shaq played in a physical era, but also a violent era. Players can still be physical and handle physical play, they just get called on violent non basketball plays. Hes being ignorant on purpose, typical shaq.

Shaq’s era wasn’t violent at all haha. I watched those games. Now Shaq himself got fouled a ton because he was so big and moved so well. No one knew what to do. It’s similar to peak athletic LeBron. Got fouled a ton. What I won’t stand for is that the era was violent; it wasn’t.
