@@michaelscarn378 there is enough room on the coaching staff for both IQ hires and Experience hires. Some hires will provide both IQ and experience in one. I think Rondo is an exception when it comes to experience, because he and some others that played with him claimed that Rondo was very involved in coaching adjustments on every team he was on except the Mavs. Hell, even Vogel gave Rondo a ton of credit for their 2020 championship, and it was Rondo who Vogel said he missed the most, not J-Kidd, or any other coach on his staff, it was ya boi Rajon Rondo. Rondo has experience in terms of schematics, so I'm not worried about Rondo as a coordinator or assistant coach. I would also value IQ over experience, because there are plenty experienced coaches in the NBA that are mediocre at best.
Aging stars, no young talent, everyone has hit their max potential and a coach who only has Podcaster experience. This franchise is officially a joke. Please blow things up and start from scratch. Just be really bad for three years and rebuild from the roots. As a Laker fan I'm willing to wait. Worked for OKC, Minnesota etc. I'd rather be really bad than mediocre at this point.
As a long time Laker fan I’m just glad they finally made a decision. The bottom line is our 2nd best player is 40 years old who still thinks he’s 30. LeBrons stats are meaningless. And if they draft Bronny it’s going to be a circus.
Jeannie Buss and the FO got their wish. They saved $4 a year by hiring an inexperienced untested coach. This could work out, or be an unmitigated disaster, depending on who the Lakers sign to support Lebron and AD.
Optimism is important.. If he’s going to be the next Spo it’ll happen in LA. So that alone is cause for SOME positivity. All the people SO sure he won’t succeed don’t really have a reason to think that (you don’t have data to support that! As of now, it’s 50/50! Lol.)
there's data... he coached in college, oh wait --- but he coached in high school --- oh wait --- but he was an assistant coach in... --- oh wait. Oh yeah, he coached his girls pee wee bball team last weekend. Does he have a chance in the ultimate circus of LA with Lebron and soon-to-be son. He'll have the standard 2 years then out. And also, JJ Reddick and Coach Spo don't belong in the same sentence. I do hope it works out tho tbh, the chances are more like 20/80 imho.
Once no one listens and we keep going in circles the Lakers need an impact player like Donovan Mitchell and Lauri Marrkenan. Anything else will continue to make them a marginal team even with two super stars.
Situation worked for Eric Spoelstra in Miami so it could be good for us. I mean, they have Pat Riley but that’s why we need an elite group of coaches surrounding JJ.
Lebron plays defense when it matters. It's a negative for the team long term for him to go all out on defense during the regular season. The last two seasons the Lakers opponents have scored -3.9 and -5.2 points per 100 possessions when he is on the court vs off. That puts him in the top 15% of the league. When a player gets beat he has two options. hustle and give yourself a 2% better chance of stopping the score or save your energy so that you can be better for the rest of the game. Older players tend to "hustle" less bc they do not have the ability to recover as easily. If they only needed Lebron to play for 15-20 minutes a game he could hustle more.
@@rlh12345 I understand why LBJ coasts on defense and the philosophy behind it makes a ton of sense. Here are the two issues with it though: 1. Things you do for 80 games become habits, and even when you turn a switch to pick up effort on defense, you are still open to mental errors, because you are working against instinct/habits. This isn't just philosophy, but is science as well. Look into habit forming and neural pathways. LBJ does become a way better defender in the post season compared to the regular season, but he still makes mental errors he shouldn't be making in the post-season, and when every possession matters, it contributes to losing games. 2. If you can't hold LBJ accountable for poor defense during the regular season, then it's going to be difficult to hold everyone else accountable, because they are just following the leader, and only 1/2 leaders is playing defense. Then the team doesn't get a good taste of what it looks like for a 5 man unit to play optimal defense, so come post-season, they don't have that chemistry of what optimal defense plays like. So LBJ can pick up his 1v1 defense easily, but because defense is also a team game, the team won't have optimized team chemistry come post-season, because only 4/5 of their starting unit were playing defense at best, probably 3/5, because someone was taking after LBJ coasting. This is why I have said in the past that I would rather have LBJ be secondary in the offense, so that LBJ can conserve energy to play defense, rather than LBJ have to coast on defense due to being the primary creator on offense. Now, in a PnR offense, your ball handler has to spend a lot of energy, and fortunately we had D'lo and Reaves to take some of the load off of LBJ, which is why I noticed LBJ playing better defense than normally does during the regular season. However, due to Reaves not being a true ball handler, and D'lo not being able to beat his man without getting a screen, when teams tightened up their defenses in the 4th Qtr, LBJ was forced to be the primary creator. In the regular season it's not as big of an issue, but in the playoffs, teams will have a tightened up defense more so than not, and that's why you saw LBJ getting tired so fast. LBJ is still elite at creating, but he just doesn't have the endurance like he used to. So getting a point guard that can run PnR like D'lo could, but unlike D'lo can blow by his guy from time to time, and shoot close to what D'lo was shooting, would help conserve LBJ both in the regular and post-season, which is why I think Trae Young is the best option, even though Donovan Mitchell is the better player, because Mitch isn't a point guard, and Murray like Trae, can rack up assist while still being a ball hog, but Trae has higher carry potential. Now, I'm aware of the whole potential of Trae getting the Westbrook treatment, not being allowed to do what he does best, but that's where coaching comes into play, and Vogel didn't want to make Russ work, and he depended on LBJ to make up for the fact he (Vogel) wasn't creative enough to design an offense to make it work. I'm not a Mark Jackson hater or anything, but Steve Kerr didn't win a championship due to piggy backing off of Mark's foundation, which Mark does deserve a lot of credit, especially defensively. Kerr changed what was a traditional Pick n Roll offense, and implemented a Princeton motion offense, which basically made Steph and Klay both primary scorers, while their big man became a facilitator. Now in that offense, your guards have to be able to shoot, but there are other motion offenses where not both your guards have to be elite shooters. If Vogel knew hot to implement one of those, Russ could have worked, but also Russ should have been allowed to run a ton of PnR with LBJ off ball. Not to turn this into a Russ post, but for Trae Young to work, we would need a coach who is creative and familiar with different motion offenses, so that when Trae isn't the primary distributor in PnR, the Lakers could be running a motion offense through LBJ/AD, where Trae is in motion for cuts and open shots. I think Trae's 3 point shooting is horrendous, not because he's a bad 3 point shooter, but because he takes a lot of bad 3 point shots. I think if Trae we to get wide open looks off of screens like Curry, he'd be a respectable shooter, although not as good as Curry. So I do think that if the Lakers are targeting Trae, it will indirectly help LBJ to be able to play defense during the regular season, which will help JJ Reddick be able to hold LBJ and everyone else accountable. The only thing it may be tough to get 3/D players if we have a 3 star blueprint again, but not impossible, just difficult.
Again with 4 years. High risk, unknown rewards should not be this long a contract. Look what happened to Ham, they're still paying him. He should help Pelinka with player evaluation for draft and roster construction. He was not known as cerebral or hard worker as a player, all are assumed upsides. All in on a huge gamble. They're trying to please lebron to re-sign. Bronny is next signee. Jeanie should just sell the team to lebron.
It's official the Lakers have become the circus of the nba. Hopefully this is the last coach that pelinka hires, in 2 years when everyone is ready to get rid of Reddick, pelinka is also out the door.
We need to give JJ a real chance. It is what it is now. It’s not like any one coach was going to make this team the favorite. Let’s see what happens. I’m more worried about roster construction than anything else.
JJ may hot have the coaching experience as Darvin Ham but I think he is smarter than Ham. He will know when to call a timeout and make an adjustment during the game. Will he be an X and O type of coach? We will see this coming season. I am cautiously optimistic.
@WavesBland26 We dont know if its the toughest conference yet. The Celtics are the best team in the league atm, the bucks were injured, Knicks and Pacers are promising and Embiid was out more than half the season and was playing with 1 and a half eyes. Also trades can happen
Hopefully Mr Riddick can get some players to go along with his current players and can he be stern enough for players to listen down the stretch of games to win bottom line
The Lakers have paid more coaches at the same time than any other team yet people keep calling them cheap! They are bad at selecting the right coaches. Plus, this happened well before Dr. Buss died. Dunleavy was a bad hire. Del Harris was a bad hire. Rudy T was a bad hire. The Lakers have only made two great coaching hires since the 1980s. When they get it right, they get championships.
@@Geo-md3up In fairness, Dr. Buss had Jerry Wedt for just about all of those years. For the few years he didn’t, he had Mitch who worked with Jerry to get Gasol from Memphis. Let’s not forget that Mitch also was the one who brought Deng to LA. Dr. Buss was living during some of the poor decisions.
I don’t care what anyone says- this is an exciting hire! Worst case scenario, it’s the best soap opera for men on TV 😂 and he’s done in a year. Best case- he ushers in a new era for the purple & gold.
@@lovdashowyou don’t believe that 😂, but i doubt coaching even matters that much tho. Just get LBJ/AD surrounded by the right players and we should be good.
@@wills.9422 you don't know me from your wife's Sancho I 100% believe that and if you don't you can go to Inglewood with the clippers . Ham got FIRED cause he was incompetent at making coaching moves in game . Playing two gaurds in the starting lineup and multiple 3 and 4 gaurd lineups . And please don't ever tell me what I believe.
Redick is a smart man. If Mazzulla can win a ring with Celtics, JJ could have done it. Redick can't do worse than Darvin Ham. Only Dan Hurley would have been a better hire than JJ
Well that part about elevating Anthony Davis's bro fighting games is fantastic. The only problem is what Anthony Davis do it. I wouldn't get your hopes up
Had mentally adjusted a while ago to JJ getting hired. Now I choose to be optimistic and wait n see as a fan. Anyways experts in media (including here like Sean) were so wrong about Ham hire, our supposedly great last off-season. If this fails and gets Pelinka fired finally, it would still be a successful move. 😂
Klutch Sports and LaBron have our Organization in a Head Lock 🔐. LaBron might be a good player 🤷🏾♂️but way too much Drama Surrounding this Dude. He's 40 yrs folks I would understand if he was 25yrs old but he's old and play on offense only. Plus he pick and chooses when he plays
LeBron put up 26-8-7 on 54% shooting 41% from 3 (better stats than AntMan). In the Playoffs he put up 28-9-7 on 57% shooting 38% from 3 which was literally better than every Celtic’s stats in the finals. And for more than half the season LeBron held his opponents to 42% shooting which was an NBA best through 40 games this season. Yes LeBron does play defense. Stop the cap 🧢
@@fearlesskingdom4051 most of his stats come at the cost of Losses to the team, as well as affecting chemistry with role players who now get cold because the ball stops with LBJ. He also he leads the Lakers in turnovers which makes my point that the ball and chemistry stops when LBJ is the main guy. For this to work he needs to NOT be the primary handler and option.
@@djmojolosangeles8190 Bro are you saying the LeBron’s stats are the reason the Lakers didn’t win more than 47 games or beat the Nuggets in the 1st round? Are you really about to go there?
@@djmojolosangeles8190dlo stats always dropped in the playoffs b4 lakers and playing with lbj.. Rui never played meaningful basketball b4 lakers. Trust me bro. These guys appreciate playing with LBJ.
With the choice of Reddick, the Lakers just assured Boston 3 more Championships. 😊 Reddick - if he is the real deal - should have at least coached grass roots like a college team - to at least get a feel for the job. Good Lakers. You will definitely need it. PS - how fun would it be if Butler joins the team? LoL
What Coach wouldn’t give the all time leading scorer preferential treatment?? Redick has been in them lockerooms and will demand respect… I like JJ & believe he has the intangibles to get the job done..
Also when you get hired as head coach after doing podcasts with Lebaby, it kind of makes me wonder who's really in charge of that team? We'll see how good of a coach Lebaby really is now. I wonder if he fines himself when he takes plays off.
This is a sad day. Just found Monty Williams is available and you do this. I am so disgusted and disappointed in this franchise. This is uncouth for them, but typical for a failing and comical franchise. This is very indicative by a poorly ran organization.
My take is that Reddick was the best choice in a weak pool of coaches. It was a bad year to fire your coach because none of the other choices were clearly better. I understand that Ham had to go... it's just unfortunate timing. This is why everyone went nuts over Hurley, because all of a sudden, there was an exciting choice that was both lower risk and Hugh upside... I'm still not over not landing Hurley... but when Hurley bailed, it was a choice between a bunch of lower mid tier coaches and JJ who was high risk, but high upside. Lower mid doesn't cut it on the Lakers, so I say swing for it. It will likely fail and in 2-3 years hopefully there is a better coach pool. And maybe we'll get lucky and JJ is a Pat Riley/ Coach K hybrid 2.0 🦄.
People saying that JJ gotta mend fence with AD. JJ called out AD for legit lapses. JJ was an EFFFING ANALYST at the time. That was HIS JOB!! If AD is all twisted up about a guy doing his job (I don't think he is) but if so, then that's a problem with AD being a baby.
Facts! Can’t help it folks got nothing else better to do but to spew hate! That’s what they said about Steve Kerr when he was hired. Now look how many rings he has as a coach.
All this he is so intelligent crap. The bar is so low for certain people. A former player who played in the league for a long time talking about stuff he use to do regularly doesn't make him a brilliant mind.
How come the national media was talking about Reddick being a coach for a while now and then he becomes the Lakers coach and everyone bashing it now????????it's hating on lakers
Basketball business is a gamble guys. I don’t know if you guys remember Pat Riley, he never coach before, ok if you think you’re better than JJ then take the coaching job.
Been die hard Lakers fan since childhood. 30 years later I never thought I could be so disgusted at how shitty a front office could run such a historic franchise. How I miss Dr. Buss. It’s been a nightmare being a Laker fan ever since he let go of the reigns
me personally I think jj was always gonna be the coach. hurley used lakers to get money from UConn and lakers used hurley as a reason to hire jj without everyone complaining. now you can say well we tried to hire hurley.
How awesome would it be if JJ ended up being the best coach in Bron’s career and the lakers are able to milk a 3-peat in the last years with LeBron and AD? Fingers crossed
Brian is the owner of the Lakers. They listen to him about everything that coach they got now ain't never coached a game. Ain't been assistant coach. It's going to be messed up 😔
Would rather hire a new coach than recycle another head coach from another team that was fired . Good luck jj and rondo. Just be better than darvin you'll be good.
Trade Rui, Reeve, JHS and two 1st round picks for Mikai Bridges & Dorian Finney Smith and now you have 3 potential wing defenders in Max, DFS & Bridges. May have to put Vanderbilt in the trade but if it’s between him and Max I’ll take Jarred and have a lock down defense
Lebron so powerful he basically helped JJ get the head coaching job with no experience and his son drafted in the 2nd round despite not performing like a top performer in college.
