Basically a neutral start switch to the control module with the potentiometer for your graduated forward and reverse going through a foot safety interlock so there's no way it will move. Good find, hope it's fixed and no come back.👍 you're right without the scanner that would have been a pain.

I watched a video of a railroad engineer giving a tour of the largest diesel locomotive engine ever used by Union Pacific Railroad. I was surprised when he said that they never changed the huge amount of oil in the engine. He said it used a lot of oil, so they just kept adding gallons, and changing the 2 giant oil filters every so many hours of running time. Looks like someone thought that would work with the lawn tractor, leaving out the filter change part too.
@newjerseybill3521
@newjerseybill3521 4 года назад
If they run their EMD,s like the marine field, the oil goes out for regularly scheduled analysis. If it comes back in spec, we keep running it. The 12-645E2s we ran used 275 gallons of oil and 14 oil filters.

Do a search on B & S compression release, you will fine many videos on changing the CAM, I had to replace CAM on 21 HP Briggs engine lasted 1 year and had same problem. Bought a new engine since the riding mower was only 5 years old and had a lot of life in it, engine cheaper than new mower.
@jonbarfield4915
@jonbarfield4915 4 года назад
@@joecoyne5660 I have replace a handful of them this year. They have had problems with Governors also. Briggs has a long history of put out engines with problems. Example, 1990 4.5 ~6.0 hp gas tank with a leaking on/off built in to the tank. Then the 8~12 hp had a leaking air filter housing (2 layers would not seal) causing every engine to need a short block. Briggs came to our shop to look at the old engines. I could go on for a long long time.

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics - Yeah, they couldn't compete with the Chinese engines out there, and started cutting corners. I'm actually surprised they lasted this long. You can buy a complete engine at Harbor FRIGHT for less than a piston and connecting rod for an old school Briggs!

Hey Ivan, that Briggs & Stratton engine just needs a good steam cleaning. Dump all the pieces out, steam clean it and let it air-dry, it's a very important and a crucial step to let it air-dry! I believe their idea of ever is about 3 to 5 years, probably about when the mower deck, bearings, belts, wheels and the rest will be falling off and broken anyway, costing more to repair than replace the whole unit. to be fair a push mower only used for trimming with synthetic that's kept topped off, could probably manage that. providing the carb. doesn't flood over thinning the oil to nothing and it's ran long enough to get nice and hot each time, to keep from condensation oil thinning/acid loading.

Phfffffftttttt.... a little superglue, that motor will run like new!! My grandfather once told me that those little engines work very hard. If you don't take good care of them, they won't work at all. I change oil and filters in my John Deere riding mower once at the start of the mowing season, and about mid-summer. And I use Amsoil 100% synthetic small engine oil in all my 4 stroke engines. Have had the John Deer mower for about 16 years. Runs like it was new. It is surprising how some people criticize me for doing this, like it is a waste of money. The JD has a water cooled V-Twin Kawasaki Heavy Industries 38 horsepower fuel injected gasoline engine in it. It has a PTO and a 65 inch mower deck, swinging 3 blades, and a fully hydraulic transmission. You tell me if I spend too much money to keep it purring like a kitten.. And when I mow, it is FULL THROTTLE. Never has complained, never thrown a rod, never given me a second of trouble. I ran the valves this year, and only one needed a small adjustment, about 3 thousands out of adjustment. And flushed and re-filled the cooling system. Take care of your equipment, and it will take care of everything you ask it to do.

I have a 26hp Briggs & Stratton extended service life engine that had just over 4000 hr., it was the power for a Scag commercial mower. I replaced the old engine because it was starting to burn oil and I use it nearly every day I need the mower to be reliable. A new B&S 27hp engine cost two years ago around $965.00. I was surprised that B&S lasted 4000+ hr. whereas a water-cooled 29 hp Kawasaki engine, I had on my other mower only lasted 2780 hr. and it cost $2300.00, go figure. It can be the governor out of adjustment, that can cause the engine to rev higher than intended.

@blockbertus
@blockbertus 4 года назад
Logically it would do that. The joystick position value is taken directly from the engine computer. So it just sees the whatever value there is and does stuff accordingly. If the value would be out of range (+/-110 or something), that could cause the maschine not to go for- or backwards.

On the Briggs I can think of another reason for the carnage. I recently had to replace my cam because I wore the lobe off. This cam is my 3rd one and I think it's because I use my rider to cut an extreme bank in front of my house and probably starve the oil pump. Do you know how this engine was used?
@SmittySmithsonite
@SmittySmithsonite 4 года назад
That's usually not as much of an issue with pressurized lube engines. Push mowers with the dip finger and no pump don't last long on angles. Of course, it needs to have the correct amount of oil in it to start with, pressurized or not. This one could've been low, and starved the pump on the last hill they mowed. With worn out oil, it won't take long to seize a big end and destroy the engine.
