The 76mm Compact Gun is a small and lightweight naval gun used on ships ranging from small missile boats to large destroyers. Developed by OTO Melara in the 1960s, it has become a best-selling naval gun and is widely used by navies around the world. This gun has a high firing rate and quick response time, making it versatile for attacking various targets such as ships, missiles, and land targets.
In Japan, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation manufactured it under license, and it is referred to as the 62-caliber 76mm single-mount rapid-fire gun in the Maritime Self-Defense Force.
The gun features a 62-caliber barrel and is equipped with a muzzle brake and smoke extractor to reduce recoil and prevent gas backflow. It is water-cooled to prevent overheating during continuous firing. The gun turret is made of fiberglass and provides protection for the gun system, although it offers little ballistic protection.
The turret is unmanned and operates automatically, with functions such as loading, firing, and ejecting cartridges all automated. It can rotate 360 degrees and has a fast rotation and elevation speed, making it capable of responding quickly to threats.
The gun fires fixed ammunition with integrated bullets and cartridge cases, with a maximum range of about 16km. OTO Melara is also developing radio-guided shells for anti-ship missile interception.
The 76mm gun has a longer range and greater destructive power than the Phalanx for anti-ship missile interception. However, its destructive power for land attack is small, and its range is limited to about 16km.
Ammunition is stored below deck in a rotating magazine, and replenishment is carried out by ammunition handlers. The weight of the turret and magazine is relatively small compared to conventional naval guns.
