Mr. Haley, can you please answer me something? Bo staff, and Jo staff are not the same, right? Neither Bo, are in the same martial art with Jo or can be found in the same art. Like, can Jo be found in Wing Chun, or vice versa for Bo and karate?
These weapons are so elementary or primal to pre-gunpowder combat, that basically everyone everywhere has used large sticks for defense. The techniques for their use come from a larger set of principles. Like this video says, they are often like an extension of one's own body. This idea applies to many weapons, nunchucks are basically a short staff with a hinge in the middle. All of these weapons are for range and leverage.
also much more complete staff systems in kukishin ryu, katroi shinto ryu, kiraku ryu, araki ryu, etc. aiki jo is not really jojutsu. It is aikido movement principles with a jo.
From what I have seen in other videos, Some say the height should to to your head, he (Mr. Haley) says to your arm pit height, so go for the middle ...about your ear height, it would be o.k.
The names designate different lengths for staffs that are used differently from each other. In this video however, it seems like he's basically showing long staff techniques with this mid-length staff. The two have different techniques based on their different advantages. (The shorter staff is quicker.)
No disrespect, but this is using the jo as if it were a bo. To each his own, but for specific jo techniques look elsewhere (be it aiki-jo or muso shinden ryu, f.i.).
He does not claim if it is aiki-jo or any other style. Is it wrong to apply bo techniques to shorter stick? Why not? It is a matter of range and power. I think this would be effective if someone got in close. A stick is a stick; there are a variety of ways to use it.
So how about a slow and detailed informative video on how to do the spins with the Joe staff? This video is informative as far as watching him do just watching him do this but it stops there
Seems you basically show long staff techniques for this mid-length staff. Different techniques exist to maximize the advantage of the shorter length, which is speed. Versus range of course, for the longer Bo.
Not Shindo Muso Ryu Jo. Made up style of Jo. Also refers Jo staff. bad description, Jo is a short staff. Calling it a Jo staff is the same as saying Staff Staff!
Spinning the staff means nothing had you shown a real strike at a target that would get our attention. But you never did that so it all appears as one big dance without power.
