I've always wondered why your interpretations differ so greatly from Meyer's illustrations, specifically with the footwork. Björn Rüther, for example, seems to follow the illustrations much more strictly. Can you explain why you've opted for this difference?

Brand New to this (not a single class yet), and just realized (as he said at the end) that longsword is a lot like "connect the dots" with the guards being the dots and proper mechanics being the line that connects them. So if you start in guard "a" and perform device "b" properly, you'll end in guard "c". I guess in a match, the end position would be a range of guards that could result given starting guard vs what your opponent does. So "guard a" should, if the device is properly executed, result in "guard c,d,e (etc)" depending on what your opponent does? I imagine knowing which guard your opponent will end up given the one they started in could help one predict their moves. But it's not like I know anything lol. Maybe I'm overcomplicating the whole thing.

Something else you can do from Schrankhut: transition really quickly into ochs, in a way that most fencers do not expect.

Great video! I'm really interested in the key stance. I'm alittle confused if theres actually any ways to use it defensively other than counter attacking? Or Is it just used for the thrust. Any tips would be appreciated!

Hello! :) I love to use the Key guard! Its one of my favorites because you can use it to break a guard or bait your opponent sending you into a great position for the "after". For example, start with Key then thrust your sword out to get into versetsen then once your opponent blocks you can use the momentum for a fast zwerchhaw. This can be done to any opening thats appropriate, remember you want to attack to the opening from where he came. Also!! I love to use the Key guard against those dirty hand snipers that target my hands on openings. Its a great defence against that. :) You can also use it to hide your distance if you're sparring someone who isnt familiar with range. You can also use the Key guard to preform middlehaws (middle cuts) from it. It works great to throw your opponent off when you take a step out. This can also be used to preform a krumphaw! The Key guard is a Great Defence guard especially on the withdrawl. If you think about it, its essentially the ochs guard but lowered. Try it with people who also stand in pflug! Hope this helps! Have a good day :)

Moving from a forward position retreating into Key is a way to use it as a "retreating-to-guard" when your opponent gets too close and/or you want/need to make some space between you. Such as if they are coming in binding your hanging guard, you could safely retreat to Key and threaten with the thrust from Key.

where can i find awesome blunts like you guys have in the video?
@mintyfresh4855
@mintyfresh4855 5 лет назад
I know this is five months late but you can find them 1. at Purple heart armory for more affordable version. or at Black fencer Ensifer Danelli Regenyei Castille Armory And others The "blunts" are called Federshwerts aka Feders for short. However these are steel. If you don't have at least a partial kit (Jacket, helmet, hema approved sparring gloves, back of the head protector, throat guard, cup for men), I recommend not to get steel. On Purpleheart armory or Black Fencer you can buy Synthetic Pentiis for 120 bucks or so. That is the cheapest safest way to get in to hema without hurting your friends since you don't need a jacket for it. With those you just need helmet, lacrosse gloves or hema gloves, and a cup for men.

i have to disagree with the end. Eisenport yes is further talked about in rappier but he tells you how to stand and gives you stucke on Eisenprt in the longsword section. Master Meyer even talks about fighting from Schlussel and Eisenport linking them to gather. Schlussel brakes Eisenport. I don't see how it is not included.

Should one train to avoid "overreaching" into the low and unicorn guards, and aim to keep the point in line; ending the motion in a proper ox and plough guard?
@seanfranklin1591
@seanfranklin1591 7 лет назад
The proper position to end the cut is the Change and Unicorn guards, that is in no way overreaching. Trying to cut into ochs and plough leads to very weak cuts. There are times when you want to keep your point on line, but for a real committed attack the point rotates through the target.

I have a Question: Did you ever use the Schlüssel successful in a Sparring? It never worked in my Experiments. It seems to restrict yourself.
@seanfranklin1591
@seanfranklin1591 7 лет назад
Yes, I and others at Blood and Iron have used Key successfully, but it still isn't as high percentage as most of the other guards. Part of it is that we don't spend a lot of time on drills involving it. Even if you can understand a device it doesn't help without a ton of repetition. The other major obstacle is that Key is probably the position most inhibited by protective equipment. There are so many devices to develop and train, and so little time. :(
@schwertschwinger

I am not convinced... let's fight^^ But one srsly Question: Why is the Arm under the Blade? I can holde the sword like Schlüssel but can easily put the left arm down. I am very sceptic against Schlüssel.
@jonmakar5646
@jonmakar5646 7 лет назад
In my experience, the arm under the blade can help to steady the point in order to make a more precise thrust. Having the arm to support the blade is similar to how gripping the blade while halfswording makes it easier to aim a thrust.
@S3CR3TL3V3LZ
@S3CR3TL3V3LZ 6 лет назад
It's to prevent long term wrist fatigue with more drawn out fights with larger blades. One day try and hold a fullsise for at least an hour and a half, then try it with Key. You'll feel the difference, the longer you hold it.
@Slash-XVI

Is the german term at 1:56 the historically used one or did you simply forget to use "ä" instead of "a"? There is the german word "hängen" which means "to hang", but it may just be a case of language shifting over time.
@HEMASimian
@HEMASimian 7 лет назад
In the translation we use, the term is spelled as Hangen, or Hangentort. That's not to say there weren't dialect differences based on the region, so it very well could have been spelled hängen by others.
@schwertschwinger
@schwertschwinger 7 лет назад
In the manual you find Hangetort as well as Hengetort. I am pretty sure it is the same thing.

no offense to the creators or sword masters of this channel. but alot of these battle stances look... rediculous. there is a difference between a greatsword and long sword, i understand that. bit playing games like wow and skyrim. the greatsword is my fave weapon personally as is the katana. but please tell me you dont need to use these preposterous stances using a greatsword in a rl battle. on vid games, i know they arnt real obviously, they hold the greatsword like cloud strife and squall leonheart do. that looks more practical than these arm twisting stances. it almost seems if you go toe to toe with a dashing warrior armed with two one hand swords or sword and shield, youll be dead before you can move your blade a inch. or... are these two instructers demoing on how to defend or parry or block a attack?
@regalrender1934
@regalrender1934 6 лет назад
A "greatsword" (which is not a real sword, there is no such thing as a "greatsword", it's actually called a Zweihander or Montante) is used similarly to a longsword, but its longer reach allows it to almost handle like a pike or spear as well. Here is a Montante in action against a sword and buckler: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gu4B-16SEls.html and YES, before you ask, the weapons used in that video are of real historical weight, length, and weight distribution. The guards/wards/stances in the video are real, they are used as passing stances and you will find that you end up in them during fights. The stance that Cloud Strife and Squall Leonhart usually do is a real guard that looks most like the Posta di Bicorno in Italian or Pflug in German: www.swordschool.com/wiki/images/b/b8/Breve.jpg Here is a video of some Blossfechten fighting (unarmored fighting) with sparring longswords (metal, blunted, of real historical weight and balance): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-10B4oCreJDo.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I0YRptcmjfc.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E22B8E2MXi0.html Double wielding swords is a bad move, it isn't effective, it rarely happened, and if you try if you'll most likely be killed. Now, sword and dagger is a very useful combo that happened all the time. Sword and shield also obviously happened all the time. Here is a video about two guys talking about the stupidity of using two swords: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xc8akxwI56s.html In short, you don't dual wield swords. In all, if you seriously enjoy swords and sword fighting, look into HEMA to see the reality of sword fighting. It's very interesting and I'm sure you'd enjoy it a lot.
@paweandonisgawralidisdobrz2522
Regal Render Zweihander is german name for greatsword. Spadone, montante, claymore, zweihander, miecz wielki, two handed sword, great sword. All mean either big or two handed (sword). Just in diffrent languages.

Paweł Andonis Gawralidis Dobrzański herbu Leliwa. Langschwert is the german word for longsword (the type of sword in this video would probably be referred to as "langeschert" not zweihander). Although the names are really more of a modern construct, back in the day you're probably right they'd just call swords whatever.
@paweandonisgawralidisdobrz2522
Regal Render i accidentaly wrote longsword were i meant greatsword. But ive edited it so never mind. Misclick If you want we can both just delete last two comments. Zweihander-greatsword Langeschert-longsword
